A high-strength hybrid component including a relatively soft first part made of a composite material including an organic matrix reinforced with fibers, a relatively hard second part made of metal, metal alloy, or ceramic, and a transition layer made of a composite material including a matrix of a material that is weldable to the hard part and fibers that are extensions of the fibers of the soft part. The transition layer matrix and the hard part may be formed by deposition of molten material on to the fiber preform of the soft part using flame, electric arc, or plasma. The resin matrix of the soft part is impregnated into the preform and polymerized afterwards. Alternatively, the hard part may be machined to shape and welded to the transition layer before completing the soft part.

The invention provides a high-strength hybrid component comprising a relatively soft first part -made of a composite material consisting of an organic matrix reinforced with fibres, a relatively hard second part made of metal, metal alloy or ceramic, and a transition layer made of a composite material consisting of a matrix of a material which is weldable to the hard part and fibres which are extensions of the fibres of the soft part. The transition layer matrix and the hard part may be formed by deposition of molten material on to the fibre preform of the soft part, using flame, electric arc or plasma, and the resin matrix of the soft part is impregnated into the preform and polymerized afterwards. Alternatively, the hard part may be machined to shape and welded to the transition layer before completing the soft part.

The invention is directed to a method for hardening a metallic part by shot blasting. In prior art hardening processes, debris from the projectiles is frequently encrusted on the surface of the part and forms indents whose bottom is often sharp and which may constitute a starting point for rupture caused by metal fatigue. The inventive process allows hardening without damaging the surface of the part. Prior to shot blasting, a metallic protection film which may, for example, be made of nickel or a nickel-base alloy, is electrolytically deposited on the part. The protection film is thick enough to adhere to the metallic part throughout the shot blasting step but thin enough to allow the shot blasting to work harden the part and to impart a residual compressive stress thereto. After the shot blasting is completed, the protection film is removed.

In an electrolytic process of silvering stainless steel parts having a hardness of at least 58 HRc, the parts are subjected to degreasing with a solvent and by electrolysis in an alkaline atmosphere before undergoing electrolytic attack in an acid atmosphere, Wood prenickeling, electrolytic neutralization and then electroytic silvering in two successive distinct operations, these being a presilvering operation in a cyanide bath such that the free KCN/metal Ag ratio is at least 15, and a silvering operation in a similar bath which also contains potash and in which the free KCN/metal Ag ratio is about 10 times lower than in the presilvering bath. The instant invention describes a method of repairing heat-resistant alloy parts which have been cracked or otherwise damaged due to exposure of combustion gases from a turbojet engine. The method includes chemically cleaning the surface of the part to remove the layer of contaminants and subjecting the part to a thermochemical treatment to thoroughly clean the cracks and other narrow, damaged areas. A diffusion brazing process is then utilized to fill the cracks or damaged areas.
