A sewing machine frame and cover construction and fastening means for securing a warped cover in place over a frame opening without imparting frame distorting stresses. To obviate imparting stresses to the sewing machine frame as result of clamping a warped cover thereto, surfaces are provided at locations on the frame and cover chosen so that the surfaces engage simultaneously in spaced localized areas when the warped cover is positioned loosely over the frame opening. Fastening means located within the localized areas of engagement of these surfaces clamp the cover securely in place without disturbing the warp.

The combination of an electronically controlled sewing machine and an auxiliary memory comprising pages of a book, or the like, each page having optical bar coded stitch pattern data printed thereon and in obvious association with a graphic representation of the actual stitch pattern. The coded data is sensed by a hand held optical reader which transfers the data, for a desired stitch pattern, to internal memory of the sewing machine.

A sewing machine is provided with an electronically controlled top feed arrangement wherein an upper feed dog and a presser foot are adapted to alternately apply and relieve pressure upon a work fabric, the upper feed dog and the presser foot being oppositely phased with respect to each other. A linear actuator is coupled to reciprocate the upper feed dog along a feed line and a memory stores feed data including for each stitch a first data portion for controlling the feed stroke of the upper feed dog and a second data portion for controlling the return stroke of the upper feed dog.

A pneumatic needle threading assist is disclosed which has a thread collecting chamber in which, due to the air flow therethrough, thread having passed through the eye of a sewing needle, is therein deposited in a series of spiral loops limiting the amount of thread in the vacuum line and preventing the vacuum source from being contaminated with the thread.

A needle threader assist which uses a needle threader having a conical opening for guiding thread through a bore thereof into the eye of a sewing needle supported by a sewing machine. Support means are provided with the needle threader which when moved to an operative position, unlatches the needle bar from its drive means and elevates it to an uppermost position and simultaneously moves the needle bar to a predetermined lateral position, permitting the bore of the needle threader to be readily located axially with the eye of the sewing needle.

A sewing machine is disclosed wherein positioning of the work feeding regulator is controlled by a digital actuator responsive to digital signals applied thereto. The positioning of the work feeding regulator is thereby adjustable in discrete increments. A manual override and feed balance mechanism is provided for effecting continuous positioning of the work feeding regulator.

A sewing machine is disclosed which includes at least one regulatable operating instrumentality, such as, for example, an adjustable needle thread tensioner. Means are provided for generating signals indicative of different parameters which affect the ultimate overall stitch, such as, for example, fabric thickness at the seam, thread type, and pattern type. A central processor is provided with an algorithm for controlling the thread tension so as to maintain uniform stitch quality as a function of the different parameters.

Adaptive sewing machine

A sewing machine is disclosed wherein a plurality of stitch patterns encoded as digital data are stored in a static memory. A graphic pattern display element having pattern images corresponding to the plurality of stitch patterns is mounted on a cylindrical member. The cylindrical member is mounted on the output shaft of a stepping motor. Rotation of the stepping motor causes the pattern images to travel past a display window through which they may be viewed by a machine operator. Control elements are provided for the machine operator to cause the stepping motor to be rotated until a desired stitch pattern image is visible in a predetermined position through the display window. A stepping motor shaft position sensor is coupled to provide signals indicative of the angular position of the stepping motor shaft, which angular position corresponds to the pattern visible in the predetermined position. These signals are utilized to access the memory to retrieve therefrom the digital data corresponding to the desired stitch pattern.

In a sewing machine in which any one of a variety of stitch patterns, each of which may have a different number of successive needle penetrations, may be produced repetitively, an operator influenced control is disclosed capable of limiting the operation of the sewing machine to the stitching of a single execution of any selected stitch pattern. After the stitching of the single pattern has been completed, further operation of the sewing machine is inhibited by suspension of needle reciprocation, needle jogging and work feed motion.
