A medical device is provided for applying compressive pressures against a patient's foot. The device comprises first and second panels of flexible material secured to one another to form an inflatable bag to be fitted upon the foot. The bag has first and second separate fluid bladders. The first fluid bladder is adapted to engage a first portion of the foot and the second fluid bladder is adapted to engage a second portion of the foot. A boot is provided for holding the inflatable bag to the foot. A fluid supply is provided for applying pressurized fluid to the first and second fluid bladders such that the first fluid bladder applies a first compressive pressure upon the first portion of the foot and the second fluid bladder applies a second compressive pressure upon the second portion of the foot. A safety vent is associated with one of the inflatable bag and the fluid supply.

Medical pumping apparatus

An improved medical pumping apparatus for increasing or stimulating blood flow in a patient's limb extremity. The medical apparatus includes a fluid supply mechanism for applying pressurized fluid to an inflatable bag, according to the principles of the present invention, where the bag is adapted to be fitted upon the limb extremity of a patient. The bag has at least one fluid bladder, and preferably separate first and second fluid bladders. Each fluid bladder is adapted to engage a different portion of the limb extremity. The fluid supply mechanism applies pressurized fluid to each bladder such that a compressive pressure is applied upon each portion of the limb extremity engaged by a fluid bladder. The fluid supply mechanism includes a compressor for providing the pressurized fluid, and a reservoir for storing pressurized fluid from the compressor. The fluid supply mechanism is operatively adapted so that the medical pumping apparatus can be operated for longer periods of time before the compressor has to be serviced or replaced. This improvement in the service life of the compressor can be accomplished by adapting the fluid supply mechanism to include a pressure control unit operatively adapted for controlling the operation of the compressor. For at least some compressors with an exhaust valve, this improvement can also be obtained by adapting the compressor in the fluid supply mechanism to include an exhaust filter disposed so as to filter the air before it is forced out through the exhaust valve.

A surgical scalpel for cutting the tissue of a patient and for selectively applying an electrosurgical cutting current or an electrosurgical coagulation current from an electrosurgical generator to the patient, includes a scalpel body defining a contoured external surface configured to be held comfortably in the hand of a surgeon, and an electrically conductive blade, mounted on and extending from the scalpel body, for cutting the tissue of a patient and for selectively applying electrosurgical cutting current or electrosurgical coagulation current to the tissue of a patient. The scalpel further includes a cable having an electrical connector for electrical connection to the electrosurgical generator, and manual switch means, mounted on the scalpel body, for controlling the application of electrosurgical cutting current and electrosurgical coagulation current to the tissue of a patient.

A device for tracking catheters includes an oscillator which is coupled to a transmit coil. The transmit coil is rotated in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the transmit coil. A receive coil situated on the guide wire of a catheter inserted into a patient's body receives the signal transmitted from the transmit coil. A rectifier rectifies the received signal, and a filter filters the rectified received signal. A strobe circuit provides strobes of light in response to the rectifie received signal and cooperates with bar image forming circuitry and structure to provide an image of a bar which is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the receive coil, which is indicative of the orientation of the catheter and guide wire on which the receive coil is situated. A bar display indicates the relative proximity of the transmit coil to the receive coil, and a numeric display provides a read-out of the distance between the transmit coil and the receive coil.

Method and apparatus for tracking catheters

A disposable electrosurgical knife handle and blade is provided with a built-in warning light positioned on the top of the handle in the surgeon's line of vision during surgical procedures in order to warn, instantly, of unwanted surges in the electrical system which could bring about tissue damage. Because of the arrangement, the surgeon may remove immediately the blade or other cutting instrument fitted into the handle from the surgical site.
