Cigarettes are manufactured using modified automated cigarette making apparatus. Those cigarettes possess smokable rods having wrapping paper having additive materials applied thereto as patterns. The additive materials, which can include a starch and/or a polymer, are applied to a continuous paper web either online or offline the cigarette making apparatus. The formulation can be applied to the paper web using application apparatus possessing a series of rollers. In particular, a wrapping paper for a smokable rod can include a pattern of bands having a water-insoluble material comprising a starch ester, a starch-coated inorganic filler, and/or a thermoplastic polymer in an amount such that the material is sufficiently deformable so as to (a) reduce an amount of pressure to apply the bands, (b) decrease paper diffusivity, and (c) maintain paper opacity at a level acceptable for commercial production of the smokable rods.

Materials, equipment, and methods for manufacturing cigarettes

A filtered smoking article is provided, which includes a tobacco-containing rod surrounded by a wrapping material; a filter element surrounded by a plug wrap adjacent to the tobacco-containing rod; and a tipping material securing the tobacco-containing rod to the filter element, the tipping material overlying the plug wrap of the filter element and a portion of the wrapping material of the tobacco-containing rod, wherein at least one of the plug wrap, the tipping material, and the wrapping material surrounding the tobacco-containing rod are secured by an adhesive composition comprising a thermoplastic starch polymer. The adhesive composition can include a blend of the thermoplastic starch polymer with a second biodegradable polymer, such as polyvinyl alcohol, aliphatic polyesters, aliphatic polyurethanes, cis-polyisoprene, cis-polybutadiene, polyhydroxy alkanoates, polyanhydrides, and copolymers and blends thereof.

A smoking article including a smokable rod manufactured using a paper wrapping material having an additive material applied thereto as a pattern. The additive material is applied as aqueous coating formulation incorporating both an alginate and hydroxypropylcellulose.

Smoking articles and wrapping materials therefor

Cigarettes are manufactured using modified automated cigarette making apparatus. Those cigarettes possess smokable rods having paper wrapping materials having additive materials applied thereto as patterns. The additive materials, which can have the forms of liquid or paste formulations (e.g., aqueous formulations incorporating starch or modified starch), are applied to a continuous paper web on the cigarette making apparatus. The formulation is applied to the paper web using application apparatus possessing rollers a series of roller. For example, additive material is applied to the roll face of a transfer roller due to roll interaction of that transfer roller with a pick-up roller; roll interaction of the transfer roller with an application roller causes transfer of the additive material from the transfer roller to the application roller; and additive material from the application roller is transferred to the paper web that passes between the application roller and a back-up roller. A radiant dryer is used to dry the additive material that has been applied to the paper web. The radiant dryer is located on one component of a two component assembly that is used to manufacture cigarettes. A first component of the two component assembly provides a source of paper web, applies additive material to that web in a pattern and dries the paper web; while a second component receives the paper web, supplies tobacco filler and manufactures a cigarette rod from the paper web and tobacco filler. An alternate assembly system provides a source of paper web, applies additive material to that web in a pattern, dries the paper web, and winds the treated paper web on to a bobbin; and that bobbin is later used to provide a source of paper web on a cigarette making machine unrolls that bobbin, receives the treated paper web from that bobbin, supplies tobacco filler and manufactures a cigarette rod from the paper web and tobacco filler. Spectrometric techniques are used to ensure proper registration of the additive material on the cigarette rods so manufactured, and to ensure proper quality of those cigarettes.

The present invention provides a smoking article having a reduced ignition propensity by reason of one or more cross-directional bands of an adhesive applied to the paper wrapper of the smoking article. The adhesive may be one of a cigarette seam adhesive, a filter plug wrap adhesive or a tipping paper adhesive conventionally used in the manufacture of cigarettes. A cigarette maker is modified to include the adhesive applicator apparatus of the invention which applies the adhesive bands to the paper wrapper in an in line process.

Method for producing a reduced ignition propensity smoking article

A degradable smoking article comprises a tobacco rod and a filter component made of a gathered web of moisture disintegrative sheet material wrapped with a moisture disintegrative plug wrap bonded along a longitudinal seam with a water soluble adhesive. A moisture disintegrative tipping paper coated on one side with a water soluble adhesive secures the tobacco, rod and filter component together. The combination of moisture and other natural elements such as sunlight, mechanical abrasion, etc., dissociates the components of the smoking article over a relatively short period of time. Other embodiments of the filter component include a hollow degradable tube and a monolithic extruded starch filter rod.

An adhesive spray delivery apparatus and a method of applying a predetermined quantity of anchoring adhesive in a predetermined spray pattern to an advancing web of cigarette paper are disclosed. The apparatus includes a pressurized spray system under control of a programmable controller for precisely and uniformly applying the adhesive in an atomized spray to the advancing cigarette paper, thereby eliminating the need to increase the density of the tobacco rod at discrete intervals of the rod to compensate for a significant volume of loose ends. The apparatus is portable and may be retrofitted to existing cigarette makers.

A cigarette carton structure having a releasable adhesive seal to permit reopening of a temporarily sealed carton without damage to the carton. The seal includes a release coating on one of two carton surfaces to be adhesively joined. One of the surfaces may be a top flap and the other surface may be a closure flap. An adhesive is placed on the release coating, and the two surfaces are joined. The release coating may be a weakly cohesive material such as a metallic ink printed on the carton surface so that when the surfaces are separated, the release coating separates without damaging the carton. Alternatively the release surface can be a layer of material that adheres poorly to the adhesive, so that the adhesive readily separates from the release layer. In either case the initial temporary bonding must be sufficiently strong to allow handling, packing and unpacking of the cartons without premature opening.

Cigarettes can be coded and identified at a later time by perforating the tipping paper to provide air dilution characteristics to the cigarette. The perforation pattern employed has a unique, predetermined configuration which is recorded and used at a later time for identifying particular set of cigarettes. A different perforation pattern can be applied to different sets of cigarettes at various times, locations, etc. Thus, the manufacturer of air dilution cigarettes can trace coded cigarettes in order to improve quality control.
