Vehicle transmission with clutch pack overrun

A drive axle assembly includes a drive axle configured to rotate with a driving torque, a first clutch pack assembly located at an end of the drive axle, and a second clutch pack assembly located at an opposite end of the drive axle. A first drive wheel assembly is operatively connected to the first clutch pack assembly, wherein the first clutch pack assembly is configured to convert the driving torque of the drive axle to a first driving torque of the first drive wheel. A method for controlling a power-shift transmission comprising controlling a vehicle travel speed by simultaneously slipping two or more clutch packs associated with opposing directions of vehicle travel and adjusting an engine speed, according to a programmed response associated with a change in one or more of the engine speed, a torque converter slip, a selected direction of vehicle travel, and an accelerator position.

Advanced power-shift transmission control system

A transmission system includes a Central Processing Unit (CPU) that controls truck braking energy by sharing energy dissipation between clutch packs. The CPU reduces engine speed and then slips the two clutch packs at the same time to maintain a reduced turbine speed for a torque converter. In another aspect of the transmission system, energy loss is reduced during high draw bar pull conditions. The engine speed is modulated to trim energy peaks at low pushing or pulling speeds. An additional transmission gear reduction restores the lost pushing or pulling forces while generating less heat in the torque converter.

Transmission control system

A clutch control for a multi-speed vehicle transmission having operator selected, hydraulically operatable clutches for the shifting of direction and speed includes a valve means which automatically engages a higher and a lower speed clutch in sequence when a direction shift is made. If the direction is shifted while the transmission is shifted to a lower speed range the next higher speed clutch will be momentarily engaged before the lower speed clutch is engaged.
