First intake valve and second intake valve for an engine cylinder bore within which a piston reciprocates are arranged side-by-side in a cylinder head for motion in unison along respective intake valve axes. First intake valve axis is nonparallel to the cylinder bore axis. A first intake valve seat for the first intake valve is disposed in a plane which is non-parallel to a plane which is perpendicular to the cylinder bore axis. First intake valve seat has a first semi-circumference toward a second semi-circumference of a second valve seat for second intake valve. At least a portion of first semi-circumference is closer, as measured along a direction parallel to the cylinder bore axis, to a plane passing through the piston perpendicular to the cylinder bore axis than is the second semi-circumference as measured along a direction parallel to the cylinder bore axis.

Swirl-inducing intake valve arrangement

An EGR cooler core has multiple tubes for conveying engine exhaust gas. Tube inlets are joined to a flat inlet header plate at tube/header plate joints in a flat zone of the inlet header plate. An endless groove in the inlet header plate circumscribes the joints while reducing a constant nominal thickness of the header plate in the flat zone along the groove without creating an opening through the header plate. This gives some compliance to the flat zone for mitigation of stresses induced by tube growth.

EGR cooler

While an engine (A,B,C,D,E) is operating, a control system () processes data for certain engine operating parameters to calculate a quantity of exhaust gas needed to satisfy an exhaust gas recirculation requirement. If a primary EGR control loop () alone can satisfy the calculated quantity of exhaust gas, a secondary EGR control loop () is closed while the primary EGR control loop is controlled to satisfy the calculated quantity. When the processing determines that the primary EGR control loop alone cannot satisfy the calculated quantity, the secondary EGR control loop is open concurrently with the primary EGR control loop and both the primary EGR loop and the secondary EGR loop are controlled to cause the combined flow of exhaust gas through the primary EGR control loop and flow of exhaust gas through the secondary EGR control loop to satisfy the calculated quantity.

Emission control system for an engine having a two-stage turbocharger

An expansion tank () for a vehicle cooling system () of an engine using a liquid coolant () includes a tank body () defining a first volume (V) containing coolant (), wherein the coolant defines a variable coolant elevation level (CEL) within the tank body. The tank body () also defines an upper volume () containing air. A bladder () is disposed in the tank body () and defines a second volume (V) containing air. The bladder () includes a flexible membrane () actuated by an actuator (). When the engine is stopped or is below a predetermined temperature, the flexible membrane () is moveable to a first position (FP) which lowers the coolant elevation level (CEL), and when the engine is started or reaches a predetermined temperature, the flexible membrane () is moveable to a second position (SP) which raises the coolant elevation level. A communicating line () is in fluid communication between the upper volume () and the second volume (V) to fluidly communicate air therebetween.

Expansion tank for vehicle cooling system

A circuit for cooling exhaust gas being recirculated through an EGR system () of an engine () from an exhaust system () successively through first and second heat exchangers () to an intake system () for entrainment with intake air. Each heat exchanger has a respective coolant inlet through which liquid coolant enters and a respective coolant outlet through which liquid coolant exits after having absorbed heat from recirculated exhaust gas. The circuit has a third heat exchanger () to which coolant coming from the outlet of one of the first and second heat exchangers rejects heat, and parallel branches () through which coolant enters the inlet of the other of the first and second heat exchangers. One of the parallel branches has a fourth heat exchanger () to which coolant flowing through that branch rejects heat, and one or more devices (A) for controlling the quantity of coolant flowing through each branch.

FLEX dual stage EGR cooling

An internal combustion engine () includes a first exhaust manifold (), and a second exhaust manifold () fluidly connected to the first exhaust manifold () through an exhaust valve (). An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler () constantly fluidly connects the second exhaust manifold () with an intake manifold (). A turbocharger () has a turbine () in fluid communication with the first exhaust manifold (), and a compressor () in fluid communication with a supercharger (). A charge air cooler () fluidly connects the supercharger () with the intake manifold ().

Constant EGR rate engine and method

A connection system for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in a diesel engine has an EGR conduit, an exhaust manifold, and a sealing strand. The EGR conduit forms a first surface surrounding an inlet. The exhaust manifold forms a second surface surrounding an outlet. The sealing strand is disposed in a groove formed by one of the first and second surfaces. The groove has an inside surface. The first and second surfaces are pressed together to form a first seal. One of the first and second surfaces compresses the sealing strand against the inside surface to form a second seal. One of the first and second surfaces may be a convex surface. The other surface may be a concave surface.

Connection system for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)

In one embodiment, a cylinder head () and a runnerless intake manifold () are assembled together and cooperatively define an air manifold () and a fuel manifold () for supplying air and fuel respectively to engine cylinders in an engine block to which cylinder head () is fastened. In another embodiment, the air manifold is the same, but the fuel manifold () is defined by a bore () and holes () in the intake manifold ().

Runnerless engine intake manifold having integral fuel delivery groove or bore

A wiring harness support and under valve cover oil deflector formed from a single sheet metal blank that is connected to each individual injectors, by a single bolt, of a Hydraulically-actuated Electronically-controlled Unit Injector (HEUI) system for a diesel engine. This combined wiring harness support and oil deflector aligns itself when mounted in the proper tapped holes in the unit injectors.

An electronic fuel injection augmentation system and method for a turbocharged diesel engine compression braking system injects a predetermined volume of fuel into cylinders of an engine at a predetermined timing prior to the piston of the cylinder reaching a top dead center position. Combustion of such injected fuel increases cylinder pressure and engine braking. The increased pressure is transferred to the turbocharger of the engine thereby increasing intake air flow and engine braking as a result thereof.
