A printing system having: a print head arranged with a predetermined nip for printing to a recording medium; a sensor positioned upstream of the print head, and configured to detect possible joints of the recording medium; a spacer arranged in a region of the print head, the spacer being configured to be displaceable to deflect the recording medium and increasing a distance between the print head and recording medium; an actuator to displace the spacer element; and a controller configured to activate the actuator to displace the spacer upon detection of a joint by the sensor.

In a method or device to determine a lift state of a recording medium from a surface of a heating saddle of an inkjet printing system, the recording medium being directed past the surface for drying, an index for power consumption of the heating saddle is determined including a determination of a time curve of the electrical power consumed by the heating saddle. The power consumption of the heating saddle depends on a desired temperature of the heating saddle. The lift state of the recording medium is determined based on the index for the power consumption.

Changes of properties (for example, dampness, sliding characteristic, gloss) of a printing substrate web caused by a printing of a printing substrate web are corrected by a multifunction device that is arranged at an output of the printing device. In the multifunction device, arranged in succession in the transport direction of the printing substrate web are devices for buffering, for smoothing, for moistening, for cooling, for lubrication and for discharge of the printing substrate web. The devices are executed and adapted to one another such that they can be optionally deactivated by the uses without affecting the functions of the remaining devices.

In an electrophotographic printer or copier, toner images of images to be printed onto a printing substrate are generated and fixed, causing sliding characteristics to be worsened. In order to remedy this problem, a moistening device is provided that applies on the printing substrate a moistening agent made from a moistening fluid and a lubricant dissolved therein. Two problems are thus solved: the printing substrate is moistened and simultaneously lubricated.

In order to be able to adjust the tension and position of a material web, for example, a paper web, that should be printed by a printer, an electrostatically-acting braking device is described that provides a charger, for example, a corotron, and a braking plate, between which the material web runs. The charger charges the material web, which is thereby drawn to the braking plate, lies on the braking plate, and is braked via friction. It is advantageous that the charge voltage of the charger and be controlled via sensors for the web tension and web position and can very quickly react to the signals of the sensors.

A fixing station for a printer or copier includes a heating device for fusing toner to the carrier material and a cover that is selectively insertable between the heating element and the carrier material. The cover may be a window blind type cover. Where two sided fixing is provided, both heating devices have a cover. The cover may have an energy storage spring to cause the heating device to be covered in the event of an emergency. An electro-magnetic locking device may be provided to retain the cover in an open position.

The apparatus for conveying finely powdered material from a reservoir includes a suction/pressure unit that projects into the reservoir. A gas is introduced into the suction/pressure unit and is mixed with the finely powdered material that is sucked into suction/pressure unit from the reservoir to form a powder/gas mixture and this mixture is discharged. Compressed air blows into the reservoir in a finely dispersed manner to fluidized the finely powdered material so that the extraction of the finely powdered material from the reservoir is facilitated.
