An extracorporeal membrane pump/oxygenator for extracorporeal cardiopulmonary support, which employs a two stage pump system in combination with a membrane oxygenator enclosed in a housing. Where the first pump, in the current embodiment, is an axial flow pump whose primary function is to create secondary flows in the oxygenator at low pressures, and the second pump, in the current embodiment, is a servo-controlled centrifugal pump whose function is to return oxygenated blood back to the patient. It provides the energy needed to overcome the resistance of the return line, and to maintain forward flow at either aortic or venous pressures, thus permitting the use of either veno-arterial or veno-venous bypass. The oxygenator portion of the device consists of two readily made cylindrical membranes suspended to form a tubular flow channel. Blood passing through the oxygenator follows a complicated spiral path such that its effective contact time with the gas exchange membranes is prolonged.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenator

A magnetically operated artificial urethral sphincter for the treatment of total urinary incontinence is presented. The artificial urethral sphincter employs an external magnet to achieve closure of the urethral cuff, a hydraulically operated silicone rubber sphincter cuff. The proposed invention consists of the urethral cuff, a connecting tube, and an elastomeric bellows assembly. The invention is closed by an external magnet placed on the skin over the implanted reservoir assembly. When the external magnet is in place the elastomeric bellows of the reservoir is compressed, and the prosthetic sphincter is closed. Removal of the external magnet from the skin over the implant allows the bellows to expand, thus opening the urethral cuff.

Artificial urethral sphincter

A single agent fibrin based hemostatic and tissue adhesive agent comprised of recombinant fibrin monomer, Bovine thrombin, and calcium chloride, which is lyophilized to powder form, and is activated upon blood contact, at the site of tissue injury, producing effective hemostasis and subsequent tissue adhesion.

A method and apparatus for manufacturing a circulatory system non-pyrogenic vascular prosthesis comprising a multilaminar tubular member comprising an interior strata, a unitary medial strata and an exterior strata. The interior strata bears a pseudoneointima facilitating lumen surface and the exterior strata bears a stabilization promoter surface. The interior and exterior stratum being separated solely by said unitary medial strata which comprises an exclusionary boundary.

Vascular prosthesis having enhanced compatibility and compliance

An apparatus and a method of use are disclosed which assist in pulsating blood to a patient during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and assists in weaning a patient after cardiopulmonary bypass surgery by counterpulsating. The apparatus includes a blood pump with a collapsible bladder and a bladder support ring with a plurality of openings to permit the entering of continuous flowing blood, the exiting of a pulsatile blood flow and the release of any air bubbles trapped within the blood supply. The pulsating blood flow is created by the compression of the collapsible bladder when filled with blood. The method consist of connecting the apparatus to the aortic return line of a cardiopulmonary bypass circuitry and to the aortic cannula of the patient. The apparatus is positioned near to the patient to maximize pulsatile output. Compression of the bladder can be synchronized to create the physiologic blood pressure of the patient or to counterpulsate with the patient's heart.

Apparatus and method of use for pulsatile blood flow

A phonograph record adapter comprising a rigid ring adapted to receive a standard phonograph record therein, a flange extending inwardly of the ring, the interior diameter of the flange being less than the diameter of the record, the flange being adapted to engage and overlie a surface of the record and being further adapted to exert a force upon the record when the record is in playing position to substantially negate the effects of warpage in the record, and spring biasing means mounted on interior portions of the ring and engageable with the record to center the record.

Phonograph record adapter

A prosthetic blood conduit comprises two porous concentrically associated tubes with a helical spring enclosed therebetween. Spring strength and frictional engagement between the spring and tubes enables the conduit to resist collapse under a wide variety of stress forces. Convolutions in the tube walls provide flexibility without kinking.
