A system, with a screen display, and an application server, is provided. Preferably, the application server registers one of a plurality of metaphor elements with a set of device attributes. A status indicating metaphor or a control metaphor is developed for use with the one of the plurality of metaphor elements. When displaying a metaphorical template, including the one of the plurality of metaphors on the screen display, the status indicating or control metaphor is associated with the one of the plurality of metaphor elements for facilitating the programming of a job or controlling an output of the job.

Apparatus and method for programming and/or controlling output of a job

A job ticket programming system, adapted for use in a printing system including a user interface, with a screen display, and an application server is provided. Preferably, the application server registers a first metaphor element corresponding with a first set of device selections and a second metaphor element correpsonding with a second set of device selections. In practice, the metaphor elements are 'linked' with each other, on the screen display, and a user is apprised of the selections, in a resulting metaphor combination which are available for job ticket programming.

Apparatus and method for programming a job ticket in a document

A job ticket programming system, adapted for use in a document processing system including a user interface, with a screen display, and an application server is provided. Preferably, the application server registers a first metaphor element corresponding with a first attribute set and a second metaphor element corresponding with a second attribute set. In practice, a metaphorical template, including the first metaphor element and the second metaphor element, and being represented by a combined attribute set with attributes from both the first and second attribute sets, is created for display on the screen display in response to displaying the first metaphor element on the screen display.

A method of processing a job, with compound segments, in a printing system is provided. The method includes the steps of (a) generating a dialog, having a set of attributes designating a manner in which compound segments of the job are to be processed by the printing system, and (b) programming the dialog so that values are provided for selected ones of the set of attributes. The method further includes the steps of (c) capturing the attribute values, programmed in step (b), to obtain a job ticket for a first one of the compound segments and (d) repeating steps (a) -(c) for one or more other compound segments to create a composite job ticket. The compound segments are then processed, in accordance with the composite job ticket, so that one or more copies of the job are delivered to one or more output/storage destinations.

A xerographic copier is constructed to include a xerographic subsystem control which will cycle-out and deactivate the elements used for xerographic copying, including bias on the photoreceptor, and a machine subsystem control which cycles-down and produces machine shutdown. Also included in the copier is an adaptive time controller provided to adjust the time periods at which the xerographic and machine subsystem controls cycle-down and/or shutdown.

A particular operator's access rights are determined through a login process. The present invention is a system incorporating a modem in an xerographic machine, thereby enabling external data communication with a remote system, while concurrently executing normal xerographic control operations. Specifically, the reprographic features of the xerographic machine are fully enabled during communication with an external or host system. Automatic paper size selection

A reprographic system of the type having a set of features available for use in executing a copying job, including the ability to pre-select a subset of desired features from the set of all available features for the generation of the copies. The system also includes a user interface suitable for displaying the available features as icons and the ability to execute the copying job in accordance with the pre-selected set of desired features. The system further includes a job status screen, displayed on the user interface, indicating the system status during execution of the copying job. Also displayed on the user interface is a second subset of the available features which represents only those features whose settings may be altered during execution of the copying job, thereby enabling an operator to alter one or more of the second subset during execution of the copying job.

Display of user selectable paper feed options

A reproduction system which includes inter alia a user interface providing a means for programming a plurality of features associated with the execution of a copying job. The system includes a means for comparing the most recently selected feature with all previously programmed features in order to identify any mutually exclusive or undesirable feature pairs. Finally, the system also contains one or possibly multiple priority establishing methods or schemes for use in automatically resolving conflicting feature selections.

A printing machine in which the magnification of an image of a computer form is adjusted so that a copy thereof fits on a selected size copy sheet. The width and the number of holes of a computer form are inputted into the printing machine. In addition, the size of the selected copy sheet is inputted into the printing machine. This information is used by the printing machine to calculate the magnification of the image and to form an image of the computer form with the magnification adjusted so that the copy of the computer form fits on the selected size copy sheet.

An electrophotographic printing machine in which successive electrostatic latent images are recorded on a moving photoconductive belt. Each latent image is adapted to be recorded in a designated region on the photoconductive belt. The designated regions are separated from one another by an inter-image zone. A test patch is recorded in the inter-image zone. The number of designated regions on the photoconductive belt is adjusted so that the size of the inter-image zone is increased enabling a portion of the latent image to be recorded in the inter-image zone without overlapping any portion of the test patch.

Horizontal image shift by shifting to a slower copying rate

A pre-programmable multiple pause points system for a post-collation copying system for a copier with associated plural sorter bins and a recirculating document handler (RDH) in which a set of document sheets may be loaded, recirculated, and copied for making a plural number of identical consecutive copies per document per circulation and outputting them to selected sorter bins for collation. This system is particularly adapted for a system of 'limitless sorting' in which the plural identical copies are job subsets collated in a variable limited number of sorter bins normally substantially less than the total number of bins and wherein the total job is completed with further RDH document circulations and further job subsets productions. The preprogrammable pause points system provides for the automatic variable number of pauses or job interrupts and for their occurrence at those points in the copying cycle appropriate for inserting job inserts or other special copy sheets into the bins being filled, repeatably, at any selected document copying point.

Pre-programmed pauses post-collation copying system

A reproduction or printing machine including a finisher having a stack mode, a staple set mode, and a bound set mode and a tray for receiving copy sheets delivered to the finisher to be operated in any of these modes. The reproduction machine includes a controller for instructing the finisher to change from a first mode to a second mode and an operating panel having a switch to initiate the change. After initiation of the mode change at the operator panel, the controller delays by a first time period the instruction to the finisher to change the mode of operation and, also, delays by a second time period the transfer of the copy sheets to the tray in the finisher. The second time period delay depends upon the finishing mode the machine is running in and the requested new finishing mode.
