A catalytic reforming process for the operation of a magnetically stabilized fluidized bed. The process utilizes catalyst compositions characterized as a particulate material which can be oriented within, and formed into a magnetically stabilized fluidized bed which comprises: (i) particles of average size ranging from about 10 micrometers (.mu.m) to about 4000 .mu.m, each containing a nonferromagnetic component and a catalytically active component composited with a single elongate ferromagnetic component or plurality of parallelly aligned elongate ferromagnetic components. The ferromagnetic component, or components, are multidomain, having dimensions of at least 1 .mu.m in all directions and a length:diameter (L/D) ratio of at least 2 but not more than 17.3, and the ferromagnetic component, or components, is present in the composite particles as inclusions within a nonferromagnetic matrix constituting at least 0.5%, preferably at least 5%, but not more than 3/2(L/D).sup.2 of the total volume of each particle, where the L/D is the ratio of the longest dimension of a ferromagnetic inclusion relative to the shortest dimension. The particles can, in said magnetically stabilized fluidized bed, rotate or turn to line up the long dimensions of the ferromagnetic components parallel to the direction of the field and the short dimensions perpendicular to the direction of the field.

A process for selectively removing nitrogen from petroleum distillate feedstocks, notably lube oil distillates or lube base stocks without significant desulfurization of said petroleum distillate feedstocks, especially lube oil distillates or lube base stocks, while hydrotreating the oil to improve odor, color, improve stability, and the like. In accordance therewith, a supported, non (metal-promoted) carbon-containing molybdenum sulfide HDN/HDS selective hydrotreating catalyst is formed from a precursor composite made by compositing a preselected quantity of a porous, refractory inorganic oxide with a complex salt characterized by the formula B.sub.x [MoO.sub.y S.sub.4-y ] where B is (a) an alkyl substituted diammonium ion, or (2) an alkyl substituted ammonium ion or quaternary ammonium ion; x is 1 where B is an alkyl substituted diammonium ion, or 2 where B is an alkyl substituted ammonium or quaternary ammonium ion; and y is 0, or a fraction or whole number ranging up to 3. The supported, non (metal-promoted) carbon-containing molybdenum sulfide HDN/HDS selective lube oil hydrotreating catalyst is then formed from the precursor composite by heating said composite, and heat decomposing the salt of said catalyst precursor composite in the presence of hydrogen, hydrocarbon and sulfur.

A particulate magnetic alloy of iron or cobalt is contacted with a phosphate ion containing solution and reacted therewith sufficiently to form a surface film thereupon, removed from said solution, preferably dried, then admixed or otherwise incorporated within an inorganic oxide matrix, notably alumina, as inclusions, the composite particle is then contacted with a solution which contains a compound, or compounds, of a Group VIII noble metal, notably platinum, which is deposited within the composite particle in catalytically effective amounts without significant loss of the catalytic metal due to surface deposition of the catalytic metal upon said particulate magnetic alloy inclusions.
