Embodiments are directed towards methods of inducing caspase activity. The methods include contacting a cell with a treatment compound represented by the following Formula (I): where Ris selected from hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to about 16 carbon atoms; Ris selected from a hydroxyl group, a tosylate group, an alkoxy group of the formula ORwhere Ris selected from an alkyl group having from 1 to about 16 carbon atoms, or an ester group of the formula OCOR, where Ris an alkyl group having from 1 to about 16 carbon atoms, and n is from 4 to 46,000, with the proviso that when Ris hydrogen and Ris a hydroxy group the treatment compound has a number average molecular weight from 10,100 to 2,000,0000 g/mol.

Inducing caspase activity

Embodiments are directed towards methods of inducing caspase activity. The methods include contacting a cell with a treatment compound represented by the following Formula (I), where the treatment compound is a random copolymer, Ris selected from hydrogen and a hydroxyl group, Ris selected from hydrogen and a hydroxyl group, Ris different than R, and a sum of x and y is from 4 to 20,000.

A liquid composition which comprises an organic liquid diluent and at least one non-ionic cellulose ether having a viscosity of up to 2.33 mPa&#xb7;s, measured as a 2 wt.-% solution in water at 20&#xb0; C., is stable over an extended time period. Esterified cellulose ethers comprising groups of formula &#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;CHR'&#x2014;CHR&#x2033;&#x2014;COOA, wherein, R&#x2032; and R&#x2033; are hydrogen or (&#x2014;S)m(&#x2014;R)n-R, wherein Ris a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, Ris an optionally substituted 5- or 6-membered cyclic group, m and n each independently are 0 or 1, and A is hydrogen or a cation, with the proviso that in each group CHR&#x2032;&#x2014;CHR&#x2033; one of R&#x2032; and R&#x2033; is hydrogen and the other one is (&#x2014;S)m(&#x2014;R)n-R, are useful as excipients for maintaining the concentration of poorly water-soluble drugs in aqueous liquids at supersaturation levels.

Cellulose ethers esterified with dicarboxylic acid

A polymeric capsule shell of high quality is prepared from an aqueous composition which comprises (A) at least one esterified cellulose ether comprising aliphatic monovalent acyl groups and groups of the formula &#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;R&#x2014;COOH, R being a divalent aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group, wherein at least a part of the groups &#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;R&#x2014;COOH are neutralized with an ammonium salt of carbonic acid, formic acid or acetic acid, and (B) from 0 to 7 weight percent of a non-polymeric plasticizer, based on the weight of the esterified cellulose ether, wherein the weight of said at least one esterified cellulose ether is at least 80 percent of the total polymer weight in the aqueous composition.

Capsule shells comprising an esterified cellulose ether

Esterified cellulose ethers which comprise (i) aliphatic monovalent acyl groups or (ii) groups of the formula &#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;R&#x2014;COOA, wherein R is a divalent aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group and A is hydrogen or a cation, or (iii) a combination of aliphatic monovalent acyl groups and groups of the formula &#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;R&#x2014;COOA, which have a viscosity of up to 2.33 mPa&#xb7;s, measured as a 2.0 wt % solution of the esterified cellulose ether in 0.43 wt % aqueous NaOH at 20&#xb0; C., and which have a viscosity of up to 13 mPao&#xb7;s, measured as a 10 wt % solution of the esterified cellulose ether in acetone at 20&#xb0; C. are useful for preparing solid dispersions comprising drugs.

Esterified cellulose ethers of low viscosity

An esterified cellulose ether comprises (i) aliphatic monovalent acyl groups or (ii) groups of the formula &#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;R&#x2014;COOA wherein R is a divalent aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group and A is hydrogen or a cation or (iii) a combination of aliphatic monovalent acyl groups and groups of the formula &#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;R&#x2014;COOA, wherein the cellulose ether has anhydroglucose units joined by 1-4 linkages and has methyl groups, hydroxyalkyl groups, and optionally alkyl groups being different from methyl as substituents such that the esterified cellulose ether has an MS (hydroxyalkyl) of 0.05 to 1.00, and hydroxyl groups of anhydroglucose units are substituted with methyl groups such that [s23/s26&#x2212;0.2*MS(hydroxyalkyl)] is 0.36 or less, wherein s23 is the molar fraction of anhydroglucose units wherein only the two hydroxyl groups in the 2- and 3-positions of the anhydroglucose unit are substituted with a methyl group and wherein s26 is the molar fraction of anhydroglucose units wherein only the two hydroxyl groups in the 2- and 6-positions of the anhydroglucose unit are substituted with a methyl group. The esterified cellulose ether is useful as an excipient for poorly water-soluble drugs.

The present disclosure is directed to cellulose ether compositions for film-forming coating applications. A coating composition is provided which contains an aqueous solution of either a very low viscosity cellulose ether or a low-hydroxypropyl cellulose ether, the coating composition having low color, The low viscosity of the cellulose ether component enables the coating composition to contain a high concentration of cellulose ether. Provision of these high concentration cellulose ether coating solutions improves production efficiency by reducing the time required to coat a substrate.

Golf ball retrieval apparatus

A golf ball retrieval apparatus comprising a shaft containing a hollow portion with an opening to the hollow portion at one end of the shaft, and a first plug located in the hollow portion of the shaft capable of moving longitudinally within the hollow portion and having holes on a side facing the opening in the shaft. The retrieval apparatus further comprising a plurality of wires with a first end anchored in said holes in said first plug, and a second end with plastic sleeves attached, the second end of the wires being oriented in a conical array. The wires may be placed in a first position which exposes the wires outside the shaft by less than fifty percent of their length and also in a second position which exposes the wires by more than fifty percent of their length outside the shaft. A second plug is fixedly located in the hollow portion of the shaft to prevent the first plug and wires from penetrating into the hollow section more than that which will place the wires in the first position within the shaft. Wires move while anchored in the first plug in a direction to spread out from one another to permit the plastic sleeve to pass about the midpoint of the ball when the wires are pressed against the ball and then to contract about the ball after the plastic sleeves have passed the midpoint of the ball to enable the wires and sleeves to grasp and hole the ball

An ear shield assembly which attaches to various headgear and protects the users ears against the sun and ultra violet rays, thereby reducing the probability of inducing cancer in this normally sensitive and exposed area. The head gear is typically a cap with the protective ear shield attachments positioned on opposite sides of the cap. These ear shields are placed above the ears and may be folded up against the cap and secured to the side of the cap with hood and loop material when they are not in use. When in use, these shields are lowered and extended outward horizontally from the brim of the cap, allowing air to reach the users ears, while at the same time blocking the sunlight from reaching the ears.
