Managing the display of an electronic device includes receiving an instruction to activate an enhanced state of the display and obtaining a current operating value of the display operating in a base state. An enhanced operating value is determined for the display based on the current operating value and a power budget allocated to the display. The enhanced operating value may be greater than the current operating value and is less than a maximum operating value of the display in the enhanced state. The display is instructed to operate in the enhanced state at the enhanced operating value.

An exemplary computer console can generate one or more video streams having image data relating to an image or a series of images, also referred to as video, to be presented by an electronic display device. The exemplary computer console can provide the one or more video streams to the electronic display device over one or more transport streams. The exemplary computer console can effectively throttle a video stream bitrate of the one or more video streams to be less than of the standard defined transport stream bitrate of the one or more transport streams to allow the transport of the one or more video streams over the one or more transport streams.

Source content super-sampled to a first resolution in an extended range space is obtained. A representation of a subpixel geometry of a display panel displaying the source content is obtained. The display panel includes, for every pixel, plural subpixel elements for three or more color primaries. A native resolution of the display panel is lower than the first resolution of the source content. An optimization operation is performed based on a set mode of the display panel and the representation of the subpixel geometry to derive a global optimization for determining, for a given pixel value based on the source content, an energy distribution between the plurality of subpixel elements of a corresponding pixel of the display panel. The source content in the extended range space is converted into intermediate content in a display space based on the global optimization. The intermediate content is further optimized based on error minimization.

Super-resolution, extended-range rendering for enhanced subpixel geometry

A display system includes a host device that provides source data to a display. The source data includes one or more data-centric blocks free from a fixed-frame size imposition, fixed-frame rate imposition, or both from the display. Further, the source data includes presentation data. The display system includes a display that receives the source data, decodes the source data to discern a presentation time, a presentation positioning, or both for the presentation data. Further, the display presents the presentation data according to the presentation time, the presentation positioning, or both.

Data centric display communications

A display device is used in conjunction with: (1) optical sensors to collect information about ambient conditions in the environment of a viewer of the display device; and/or (2) privacy element identification and detection mechanisms (PEDMs) to collect information about the presence, orientation, and/or type of privacy elements being used in conjunction with the display device. For one embodiment, a processor in communication with the display device may create a view model based, at least in part, on the predicted effects of the ambient environmental conditions and/or presence of privacy elements being used in conjunction with the display device on the user's viewing experience. The view model may be a function of gamma, black point, white point, privacy element orientation and/or type, backlighting, field of view, number of viewers, color offset, or a combination thereof. The view model is also referred to as an ambient/privacy model.

Lossless image compression using differential transfers may involve an image compression unit receiving image data for an image in a sequence of images and transmitting the image data such that image data for at least some image tiles is transmitted using lossy compression due to resource limitations. The image compression unit may then receive image data for a subsequent image in the sequence and determine that the image data for at least some tiles does not change relative to the image data for corresponding tiles of the previous image. The image compression unit may then transmit image data in a manner sufficient to create lossless versions of tiles for which lossily compressed image data was sent previously.

Systems, methods, and devices for adding contextual matte bars to format image data to another aspect ratio are provided. For example, a method may include receiving image data of a first aspect ratio into a processor. The processor may receive a characteristic of a destination display of a second aspect ratio, an indication of ambient lighting, an indication of a characteristic of the image data, or any number of these factors. The processor may add matte bars to the image data to cause the image data to be formatted to the second aspect ratio. The appearance of the matte bars may depend on the factors received by the processor. The formatted image data with these contextual matte bars then may be sent from the processor to the destination electronic display.
