In some examples, a management controller is to dynamically vary a parameter that controls an operational characteristic of a bus when transferring different portions of information from a memory over the bus during a process of an electronic device in which a cryptographic operation is performed. The different portions of the information from the memory are to be transferred over the bus with different operational characteristics of the bus.

Dynamic variation of bus parameters

An apparatus includes a host and a baseboard management controller. The baseboard management controller includes a semiconductor package; and the semiconductor package includes a memory, a security hardware processor; and a main hardware processor. The main hardware processor causes the baseboard management controller to serve as an agent that, independently from the host, responds to communications with a remote management entity to manage the host. The security hardware processor manages the storage of a secret of the host in the memory.

Managing storage of secrets in memories of baseboard management controllers

A processor executes firmware to write control data describing transfer descriptors for a bus protocol engine to an address that is associated with a transfer descriptor buffer for the bus protocol engine. The bus protocol engine performs an operation according to the transfer descriptors with a slave device; the processor is part of a first semiconductor package; the bus protocol engine is part of a second semiconductor package other than the first semiconductor package; and the address corresponds to a memory of the second semiconductor package. A first physical interface of the first semiconductor package communicates with a second physical interface of the second semiconductor package to direct the control data to the memory.

Directing control data between semiconductor packages

Various examples described herein provide for a management controller that includes a virtual universal serial bus (USB) host controller that can emulate an actual USB host controller to a central processor. A particular endpoint from a number of endpoints is associated with a virtual USB device that is coupled to the virtual USB host controller. The particular endpoint is to refer to a location in a management memory.

A memory controller containing one or more ports coupled to a buffer selection logic and a plurality of buffers. Each buffer is configured to store write data associated with a write request and each buffer is also coupled to the buffer selection logic. The buffer selection logic is configured to store write data associated with a write request from at least one of the ports in any of the buffers based on a priority of the buffers for each one of the ports.

A remote management controller may include a video redirection device and a processor. The video redirection device may be configured to: obtain a slice of video data output from a video graphics controller; calculate at least one value correlative to the slice of video data; and if the calculated value for any portion of the slice differs from a value for a previously obtained corresponding portion, update a table associated with an image related to a remote system with the calculated value, and process the portion of the slice to create a data portion of a network packet in a network buffer. The processor may be configured to: allocate the network buffer; and provide a header portion of the network packet to the network buffer.

Method and apparatus for redirection of video data

The present invention relates to providing a secure computing environment in a remote server management controller. The exemplary embodiment includes a hierarchy of register security levels restricting register access by communications interfaces shared by the remote server management controller and a managed server associated therewith. Failsafe protection is provided to override register security under certain conditions.

Method and apparatus for creating a secure embedded I/O processor for a remote server management controller

A remote management controller may include a capture engine and a processor. The capture engine may be configured to obtain a slice of video data output from a video graphics controller, store the slice of video data, and calculate at least one value correlative to the slice of video data. The processor may be configured to retrieve the slice of video data stored by the capture engine and process any changed portion of the slice of video data for transmission to a remote system.

Method and apparatus for capturing slices of video data

In at least some embodiments, a method comprises emulating a Universal Serial Bus (USB) host controller at a computer system. The method further comprises using the emulated USB host controller to interface a remote management console with the computer system.

Emulating a USB host controller

A system includes proxy logic which detects situations which, unless action is taken, would result in undesirable bus behavior. In one embodiment, the target device of a bus cycle includes proxy logic which determines when the target device is unable to respond correctly to a bus cycle. In this situation, the proxy logic blocks a bus signal from being received by the addressed logic in the target device, thereby preventing the target device from responding at all. In another embodiment, proxy logic is located external to the target device and determines when the target device has not responded to a cycle intended for it. When this condition has occurred, the proxy logic responds to the cycle before the bus's subtractive decode agent has a chance to claim the cycle. The proxy logic's response may be to return bogus data or terminate or abort the cycle.

Mechanisms to prevent undesirable bus behavior

A remote management controller may include a video redirection device and a processor. The video redirection device may be configured to: obtain multiple separate slices of video data output from a video graphics controller; calculate at least one value correlative to each of the multiple separate slices of video data; and if the calculated value for any portion of any of the multiple separate slices differs from a value for a previously obtained corresponding portion, update a table associated with an image related to a remote system with the calculated value, process the portion of the slice into a network packet, and move the network packet to one of multiple network buffers. The processor may be configured to: allocate the multiple network buffers; and facilitate transmission of the network packets loaded into the network buffers to the remote system.

Method and apparatus for capturing and transmitting screen images

A remote management controller may include a capture engine and a processor. The capture engine may be configured to: obtain a slice of video data output from a video graphics controller; calculate at least one value correlative to the slice of video data; determine whether any portion of the slice has been locked; and if any portion has not been locked and if the calculated value for such portion of the slice differs from a value for a previously obtained corresponding portion, move the portion to a virtual screen buffer, update a table associated with the virtual screen buffer with the calculated value, and modify a change table to indicate that the portion has changed. The processor may be configured to: read the change table to determine whether any portion of video data in the virtual screen buffer has changed; and if any portion has changed, lock any changed portion from being accessed by the capture engine, access the changed portion from the virtual screen buffer, and process the changed portion in the virtual screen buffer for transmission to a remote system.

Method and apparatus for managing changes in a virtual screen buffer

The disclosed embodiments relate generally to remote server management technology. More particularly, the embodiments relate to improving the ability of remote server management tools to snoop large amounts of data, including graphical video data, from a communication bus. When snooping the communication bus for data, there is a risk that a storage device gathering the data will be overrun when the volume of relevant data snooped is high. The embodiments relate to a method and apparatus for passively throttling the communication bus to prevent overrun of devices storing snooped data.
