An across-the-stack gas analyzing spectrometer has a radiation source assembly including a cylindrical tube 22 having, in succession from its outer end toward the stack end a radiation emission assembly 28, a first lens assembly 30, and an AOTF assembly, all in optically aligned arrangement because of the circular perimeter of the elements in the circular tube, the arrangement also including a projecting second lens nozzle 98 received in an air window assembly 104 which forms a venturi with the second lens, the air window having a ball joint arrangement 120 for easy alignment of the directed beam, and also including a small diameter air window tube 142 through which clean air is directed into the stack through a larger diameter stack opening.

Gas spectrometer construction having an improved alignment feature

A detector assembly of a spectrometer device which includes a built-in test gas chamber, has a housing defining a chamber with a first end having a first aperture and a second end having a second aperture opposite the first aperture. While light transmissive windows can be mounted in the opposed apertures to enclose the chamber, it is preferred that a focusing lens be mounted in the first aperture and a detector in the second aperture in order to enclose the housing ends and define the chamber. The chamber has a cone-like inner surface tapering from the first aperture to the second aperture. The housing has a test gas inlet in communication with the chamber and disposed proximate the first end thereof. A test gas outlet is in communication with the chamber and disposed proximate the second end. The test gas inlet is so oriented as to introduce test gas into the chamber on a tangent to the first end, first aperture resulting in a tangential flow path direction within the cone-like chamber.

The improved system for remote chemical analysis of this invention includes a quartz halogen bulb as a source of infrared light, quartz fibers leading to and from a sample cell, a non-collinear thallium arsenic selenide, AOTF to perform spectral analysis and a lead selenide detector, Both the AOTF and the detector are interfaced with a microcomputer. Under the control of the microcomputer, this equipment gathers and interprets transmission spectra obtained through the passage of infrared light through the sample cell. Microcomputer interface provides rapid random-access to the RF frequency driving the AOTF, which selects the wavelength of light to be examined and also provides routines for sample averaging and the comparison of various reference spectra. An acousto-optic device mounted in an enclosure which includes input and output crystal fiber connectors is also provided.

System for remote chemical analysis

An improved automated acousto-optic analyzer system includes an acousto-optic tunable filter which is coupled with a source of radiation to produce pulsed light at predetermined wavelengths. This light is transmitted through a gas stack containing gases to be analyzed, to a distant detector. The configuration of the acousto-optic tunable filter, radiation source on one side of an environment of interest and a detector on the opposite side of an environment of interest produces spatial separation of the tuned, diffracted light from the undiffracted broad spectrum of the light source at the detector. This configuration eliminates the need for polarizers in the system. It also combines the tuning function of the AOTF with a chopping function, allowing extraneous radiation to be discriminated against. Thus the improved configuration of the disclosed invention permits effective operation of the gas analysis system in a gas stack characterized by extremely high ambient temperatures.

Automated acousto-optic infra-red analyzer system for monitoring stack

An improved combustion control system for a jackshaft controlled boiler or the like utilizes a second power actuator, a linkage biasing mechanism and a function generator which provides a position control signal as a function of the boiler load in order to position the linkage biasing mechanism to obtain an automatically calibrated, near optimum relationship between fuel and air. An alternative embodiment of this invention includes a flue gas analysis system where the position control signal is modified to further enhance combustion efficiency. This invention also includes a method for programming a programmable combustion control system according to this invention.

Jackshaft controlled boiler combustion control system

The reference gas of an electrochemical cell is vented into the process gas being measured at a location sufficiently close to the cell to maintain the gas pressure of the reference gas equal to the gas pressure of the process gas. A packing gland for securing a sensor cell within a support member for high temperature applications is also disclosed.

Method of operating a gas analyzer and solid electrolyte gas sensing

An improved tungsten inert gas-shielded non-consumable composite welding electrode having a solid tungsten rod center (12) and a concentric outer sleeve (14) substantially lower in electrical resistivity than the tungsten rod, bonded adhesively and cohesively to the tungsten by flame spraying so that the surface irregularities of the mating surface areas of the tungsten and outer sleeve mechanically interlock. The improvement is provided by coating the outer sleeve onto the tungsten center and adhesively and cohesively bonding the interface of the surface area of contact to maintain a minimum resistance electric coupling at welding operating temperatures.

Non-consumable composite welding electrode

A gas tungsten arc welding torch having an elongated gas nozzle (18) with an oblong cross section designed for deep groove, narrow gap welding. The nozzle is rotatably coupled to and communicates with a gas port within the main torch body (16) and defines a gas passage along the length of the welding electrode (10), which extends through the longitudinal axis of the nozzle. The nozzle (18) includes a detachable end section (42) which captures and supports a replaceable gas lens (30) disposed within the gas passage of the nozzle within 7/8 to 1 inch from the nozzle orifice (40), and traverse to the direction of gas flow. The electrode (10) is formed from a solid tungsten rod center (12) and a concentric outer sleeve (14) substantially lower in electrical resistivity than the tungsten rod, which is adhesively and cohesively bonded to the tungsten. The outer sleeve extends from the point of electrical connection (32) within the main torch body (16) to a point on the tungsten electrode downstream of the gas lens. The nozzle is sealably mounted (38) to the main torch body and readily detachable for easy replacement.

Gas tungsten arc welding torch

A method of applying a gas shielded tungsten arc welding process in a deep, narrow groove joint wherein the shield gas is directed to the weld puddle through an elongated gas nozzle 14 which surrounds a substantial length of the welding electrode and is sized to extend into the groove. The improvement including incrementally increasing the width (20) of the nozzle to correspond to increases in the width of the groove at preselected increases in the width of the groove as the nozzle is withdrawn from the groove during successive weld passes. The preselected elevations and nozzle widths are chosen so that the desired gas shield area does not substantially exceed 1.25 times the nozzle width.
