Activated carbon monolith catalyst, methods for making same, and uses thereof

An activated carbon monolith catalyst comprising a finished self-supporting activated carbon monolith having at least one passage therethrough, and comprising a supporting matrix and substantially discontinuous activated carbon particles dispersed throughout the supporting matrix and at least one catalyst precursor on the finished self-supporting activated carbon monolith. A method for making, and a method for use, of such an activated carbon monolith catalyst in catalytic chemical reactions are also disclosed.

A catalytic converter device, useful with a self-cleaning oven, is provided. The device includes (a) a dish-shaped body formed of a mesh of metal strands, the body having a base member, sidewalls projecting from the base member, and a flange extending out from the sidewalls, the mesh having a plurality of apertures therethrough; (b) a catalytic material on at least the surface of the mesh; and (c) one or more locking tabs extending from the sidewalls, wherein the locking tabs and flange cooperate to secure the device within an orifice of a gas vent so exhaust gases will pass through the apertures. The locking tabs can be formed by punching a hole in the sidewall, such that each locking tab remains integral with the sidewall, the locking tab projecting from an edge of the hole distal the flange and at angle toward the flange.

Snap-fit catalyst device

A catalytic converter device for use with a device such as an oven is provided. The catalytic converter device includes a catalyst-coated ceramic substrate and a mounting ring. The mounting ring secures the ceramic substrate and is engagable with one or more surfaces of a vent of the oven to secure the catalytic converter within an orifice of the vent such that gases flowing through the vent will pass through the apertures of the substrate. The mounting ring includes a body in the shape of a ring, one or more retaining tabs extending from the body which secure the ceramic substrate within the ring about the circumferential surface of the ceramic substrate, and one or more locking tabs extending from the body. The one or more locking tabs allow the mounting ring to be slid or snapped into place in the vent orifice, thereby eliminating the need to secure the catalytic converter device using screws.

Clip-mounted catalyst device

Cordierite compositions having increased porosity and improved thermal expansion characteristics are disclosed. The cordierite compositions comprise from about 0.025 to about 1.5 percent by weight germanium dioxide and exhibit reduced CTE. The cordierite compositions are made by heating a mixture of kaolin, talc, alumina, kyanite and germanium dioxide to temperatures of between 1350.degree. and 1475.degree.C. The cordierite compositions are preferably made from a mixture which includes a calcined material, such as calcined talc, so that the mixture is more easily processed and the resulting cordierite compositions are more porous, and thus, more easily coated.
