A flow tool has a sensor that detects plugs (darts, balls, etc.) passing through the tool. An actuator moves an insert in the tool once a preset number of plugs have passed through the tool. Movement of this insert reveals a catch on a sleeve in the tool. Once the next plug is deployed, the catch engages the plug on the sleeve so that fluid pressure applied against the seated plug through the tubing string can move the sleeve. Once moved, the sleeve reveals ports in the tool communicating the tool's bore with the surrounding annulus so an adjacent wellbore interval can be stimulated. The actuator can use a sensor detecting passage of the plugs through the tool. A spring disposed in the tool can flex near the sensor when a plug passes through the tool, and a counter can count the number of plugs that have passed.

Indexing sleeve for single-trip, multi-stage fracing

A sliding sleeve has a sensor that detects plugs (darts, balls, etc.) passing through the sleeves. A first insert on the sleeve can be hydraulically activated by the fluid pressure in the surrounding annulus once a preset number of plugs have passed through the sleeve. Movement of this first insert activates a catch on a second insert. Once the next plug is deployed, the catch engages it so that fluid pressure applied against the seated plug through the tubing string can moves the second insert. Once moved, the insert reveals port in the housing communicating the sleeve's bore with the surrounding annulus so an adjacent wellbore interval can be stimulated. The first insert may also be hydraulically activated after a preset time after a plug has passed through the sleeve. Several sleeves can be used together in various arrangements to treat multiple intervals of a wellbore.

A system and method for logging a formation adjacent to a borehole. The system includes a conveyance member, a memory module in communication with the conveyance member, a communications module in communication with the memory module, and a logging tool in communication with the communications module, wherein the communications module is configured to facilitate communication between the memory module and the logging tool.

System for logging formations surrounding a wellbore

An axially extended downhole seismic source is disclosed. In one embodiment, the seismic source includes multiple pressure storage chambers, each having an inlet valve and an outlet valve. The inlet valve is coupled between the pressure storage chamber and the interior of the drill string, and the outlet valve is similarly coupled between the pressure storage chamber and the annular space around the drill string. A compressible fluid may be provided in the pressure storage chambers, and pistons may be positioned to contact the compressible fluid. For each pressure storage chamber, an inlet piston contacts the compressible fluid and fluid inside the drill string, while an outlet piston contacts the compressible fluid and fluid in the annular space around the drill string. When the outlet valve is closed, the inlet valve can be opened to allow pressure inside the drill string to compress the compressible fluid inside the pressure storage chamber. Subsequently closing the inlet valve and opening the outlet valve causes fluid to be ejected into the annular space, thereby generating seismic waves. The use of multiple pressure storage chambers allows the pressure front from the seismic source to be extended axially to advantageously increase the fraction of seismic energy transmitted into the formation while preventing damage to the formation.

Axially extended downhole seismic source

A system is disclosed for synchronizing a clock in a well containing a drill string with a clock located near the surface of the well. The system includes devices for transmitting and receiving a pair of acoustic signals between locations associated with each clock and processing those signals. The system determines the time of arrival of each acoustic signal by analyzing the shape of a function of the acoustic signal chosen from a group of functions suitable to determine a clock offset with millisecond accuracy.

Method for compensating for remote clock offset

A vertical seismic profiling system includes seismic receivers for placement on a drillstring and surface seismic sources. One-way checkshot data may thus be measured without tripping the drillstring. A downhole acoustic tool measures the local interval transit time of the formation, and improves the detection of targets ahead of the drill bit. The local interval transit time may be applied to the time of travel from reflections in front of the bit to establish distance to the bit. The down-going wavetrain may be deconvolved with the total up-going wavetrain to extract the nearest reflector and the relative acoustic impedance at the reflector. A synthetic seismogram may also be created based on reflection depth data and corrected with checkshot data.
