A metal sheathed heater includes a solid state control device that allows the metal sheathed heater to be more efficiently operated. The control device supplies or terminates power to the heater according to certain conditions. Further, the control device uses predetermined time periods to control power to the heater. Thus, the heater is not kept on unnecessarily.

A metal sheathed heater includes a thermostat, a means for mounting the thermostat in a secure location, and a joint interconnecting the thermostat with a source of power and a lead wire of the metal sheathed heater. The joint is a type that is moisture and abrasion resistant, mechanically strong, and electrically insulating.

A metal sheathed heater utilizes splice connections that connects ends of a heater cable with ends of a lead wire. Each splice connection has a connector that connects core wires of the lead wires and heater cable together. Heat shrinkable tubing surrounds the connector and ends of the heater cable and lead wires. An adhesive is interposed between the heat shrinkable tubing and heater cable and lead wire ends to bond with the heat shrinkable tubing and complete the splice connection. The metal sheath of the heater can be formed with an enlarged diameter portion to account for the heat shrinkable tubing surrounding the lead wire and heater cable ends.

A solid state heater uses a heater subassembly employing a terminal block, terminals and a PTCR or NTCR heater. The terminals engage and make electrical contact with the heater, thus eliminating the need for a rigid heater housing. The heater subassembly can be formed into a soft body or rigid body heater for heating purposes. The soft body heater uses a soft casing that envelops the heater subassembly with the casing expanding upon heating to provide a snug fit during use. The heater subassembly can be inserted in the cavity of either a soft body or a rigid body with potting compound filling any remaining voids, and the rigid or soft body can then be used for heating purposes.

A mica board open coil resistance heater assembly includes a mica board subassembly of at least one pair of mica boards, a resistance wire wound around the boards, an electrical connection clip secured to each mica board, wherein each end of the resistance wire is connected to a respective clip. A terminal plate subassembly includes a thermostat, a ceramic two-hole terminal block, and bus wires, the bus wires adapted to be attached to a portion of the electrical connection clip to connect the resistance wire to power. The ceramic two-hole terminal is able to receive push on terminals from power conductors.

An electric belly-band heater includes at least one conduit fitting housing. The housing is located on the heater to surround one or more lead wires and provide a securement point for a conduit end. The conduit end can be secured to the housing using the appropriate fittings so that the lead wire exiting the heater sheath is totally encased in the conduit to meet installation codes.

A cooking controller assembly includes a heating element, a push-to-turn rotary switch, and an electric controller. The heating element is coupled to the push-to-turn rotary switch and the electric controller. The push-to-turn rotary switch is manually pushed and turned to selectively connect power to the heating element. The electric controller is coupled to the push-to-turn rotary switch and the heating element, and electrically controls the power to the heating element in relation to the manual rotation of the push-to-turn rotary switch.

A switch assembly includes a shaft, a first switch and a second switch, a potentiometer including a first and a second terminal, and an electric controller. The first switch is coupled to a first device, whereas the second switch is coupled to a second device. The shaft is coupled to the first switch and the second switch, and is moved to a first position to selectively connect power, through the first switch, to the first device, and to a second position to selectively connect power, through the second switch, to the second device. The potentiometer is coupled to the shaft, and provides a variable resistance between the first and the second terminal in relation to the movement of the shaft. The electric controller is coupled to the potentiometer, and electrically controls the power to the first device and/or the second device in relation to the variable resistance between the first and the second terminal of the potentiometer.

A method and apparatus for forming a heating element by corrugating a ribbon to a waveform having an amplitude based on a measured resistance per unit length of the ribbon. The amplitude of the corrugation is varied based on the measured resistance, to vary the actual path length of the heating element, shorter based on higher resistance and longer based on lower resistance. The heating element is formed to have a predetermined length dimension. The apparatus comprises a pair of intermeshed gears, with the spacing controlled in accordance with the measured resistance per unit length of the unformed ribbon.

A heating device, such as a heating coil for use in apparatus to be heated, has a removable flexible strip carrier which enables the coil, already supported on ceramic insulators and carried by brackets, to be readily installed in the apparatus. The disposable or reusable strip carrier is notched for supporting the insulators and is easily removed after installation of the device.

A heater assembly includes a housing which both channels air flowing around a heating element and provides support structure for the elements holding the heating element. In one embodiment, a lower U-shaped channel has recesses in opposed sidewalls to engage down-turned ends of holding elements. A second U-shaped channel is attached to form a hollow duct open at opposite ends. In a second embodiment, a U-shaped channel is made of flexible material so that the spacing between opposed sidewalls may be varied. A holding element is secured between the sidewalls by separating the sidewalls to allow insertion of the holding means.
