A new class of heterocyclic metallocenes, a catalytic system containing them and a process for polymerizing addition polymerizable monomers using the catalytic system are disclosed; the heterocyclic metallocenes correspond to the formula (I): YR&#x2033;ZMeQPwherein Y is a coordinating group containing a six &#x3c0; electron central radical directly coordinating Me, to which are associated one or more radicals containing at least one non-carbon atom selected from B, N, O, Al, Si, P, S, Ga, Ge, As, Se, In, Sn, Sb and Te; R&#x2033; is a divalent bridge between the Y and Z groups; Z is a coordinating group, optionally being equal to Y; Me is a transition metal; Q is halogen or hydrocarbon substituents; P is a counterion; i is 0 or 1; j is 1-3; jj is 0-2; k is 1-3; and l is 0-2.

 A metallocene compound of formula (I) wherein M is zirconium, hafnium or titanium; X is hydrogen, halogen, or a hydrocarbyl radical optionally containing heteroatoms; R, R, Rand R, are hydrogen or hydrocarbyl radicals; Ris a hydrocarbil radical; L is a divalent bridging group T is a radical of formula (II), (III), (IV) or (V), wherein Rand Rare a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbyl radical. with the proviso that at least one group among R, R, Rand Ris a group of formula C(R)Rwherein R, equal to or different from each other, is an hydrocarbyl radical; and Ris hydrogen or an hydrocarbyl radical. These compounds are fit for the preparation of propylene copolymers.

A class of bridged or unbridged metallocene compounds is disclosed, wherein the cyclopentadienyl ligands have two or four adjacent substituents forming one or two alkylenic cycles of from 4 to 8 carbon atoms. These metallocenes are useful as catalyst components for the polymerization of olefins, particularly for the (co)polymerization of ethylene and for the polymerization of propylene.

These metallocenes can advantageously be used in catalyst systems for the polymerization of olefins to generate a wide variety of different polymers including HDPE, LLDPE, ethylenelpropylene/(diene) elastomers, tactiospecific C3&plus;&agr;-olefin polymers, intimate mixture thereof and the like.

Metallocene compounds having two fluorenyl ligands bridged with a single silicon or germanium atom, said atom having two substituent groups containing a total of at least four carbon atoms, are useful as catalyst components for the polymerization of olefins. Particularly, it is possible to prepare high molecular weight atactic polypropylene with improved yields with respect to the known catalysts.

Metallocene compounds of a Group 4 or 5 metal having two fluorenyl ligands bridged with a single silicon or germanium atom, said atom having two substituent groups containing a total of at least four carbon atoms, are useful as catalyst components for the polymerization of olefins. Particularly, it is possible to prepare high molecular weight atactic polypropylene with improved yields with respect to the known catalysts.
