A curvilinear peristaltic pump for facilitating the pumping of a liquid through a length of resilient tubing. The pump comprises a housing having a platen member attached thereto and a rotatable cam disposed therewithin. Also disposed within the housing is a drive unit of the pump which is mechanically coupled to the cam such that the activation of the drive unit results in the concurrent rotation of the cam in a first direction and the deactivation of the drive unit maintains the cam in a set position. Movably attached to the housing are a plurality of pump fingers of the pump, each of which has a first end which is cooperatively engaged to the cam and a second end which is disposed in spaced relation to the platen member. The cam is configured to sequentially move the pump fingers radially outwardly toward and inwardly away from the platen member when rotated in the first direction by the drive unit. A portion of the tubing may be extended between the platen member and the second ends of the pump fingers such that the sequential movement of the pump fingers toward and away from the platen member results in liquid within the tubing being pumped in the first direction of rotation of the cam. The pump is used in conjunction with a disposable tubing assembly which is provided with a shut-off valve to selectively obstruct the flow of liquid through the tubing assembly.

The invention pertains generally to ultrasonic imaging systems and is more particularly directed to use of such systems for nondestructive testing to measure the thickness of parts, or to examine parts suspected of having internal flaws but where access is often limited to the external surfaces. The invention makes thickness and flaw determinations of substantial accuracy without resulting to use of an expensive ultra high frequency clock to measure time.

A measurement system employs a method and apparatus for uniquely tagging each of a plurality of transducers, automatically recognizing the tag for identifying the transducer and automatically adjusting electronic parameters of the system for enhancing performance with a selected transducer. In a preferred embodiment, a resistor is inserted in a piezoelectric transducer of an ultrasonic thickness gauge, a current source and A to D converter measure the resistor and a microprocessor-based logic system adjusts measurement parameters of the gauge to be automatically optimized for the associated transducer characteristics.

A microprocessor-controlled, hand-held, digital ultrasonic thickness gage having automatic zero calibration, scroll velocity adjustment and an electronic locking feature to prevent inadvertent calibration or velocity data variations. This invention is used with a dual-element transducer and, in that regard, employs a microprocessor program which automatically corrects for the well-known, inherent thickness gaging inaccuracies (nonlinearities) always caused by the use of the otherwise advantageous (high sensitivity) dual element transducer.

A bolt elongation measurement apparatus and method for measuring the length of bolts of all sizes and shapes. The apparatus utilizes a microprocessor-based digital system including a binary counter which counts pulses generated by a high frequency oscillator during the time interval between the entry into the bolt of a first pulse and exit from the bolt of a second pulse derived from the reflection return of ultrasonic energy from the opposite end of the bolt. The count is applied to a computer for calculation of bolt length or of bolt stretch due to mechanical stress. The calculation also incorporates data input via thumbwheel switches and corresponding to material velocity, stress correction factor, measurement temperature, and thermal correction factor. A unique digital filtering algorithm ensures an accurate and stable measurement. The receiver of the apparatus overcomes the problem of spurious ultrasonic reflection characteristics of threaded bolts by means of a dual characteristic echo sensing circuit to deal with stress-induced pulse distortion and a unique gain contour circuit to deal with spurious echo pulses that are characteristic of threaded bolts.

Apparatus and method for measuring the extension of bolts under stress

A non-destructive bond testing apparatus utilizes impedance variation represented by both the phase and amplitude of the signal vector response of a sonic energy generating and receiving probe, which is applied to a laminar, honeycomb or fiber composite structure under test. Typical bonding methods for which this bondtester and method are applicable include adhesive bonding, diffusion bonding, brazing, resistance and impact/friction bonding. A cathode ray tube displays the tip of the vector (as a bright dot) which represents the impedance characteristic affected by the structure under test. A null circuit deletes the response of a non-flawed (or normal) portion of the structure under test so that a flawed (or abnormal) portion of the structure produces an impedance variation from the null point, the variation being represented on a polar coordinate display by the amplitude and angular position of the vector tip, thereby providing diagnostic information regarding the location and type of the bondline condition being detected. Bondline conditions/flaws detectable include, disbonds, adhesive thickness, adhesive porosity, degree of adhesive cure, adhesive (cohesive) strength and forms of in-service adhesive or bondline degradation.
