An electrical connector member for a coaxial cable. The connector member comprises a first section and a second section. The first section has two or more portals therein, each portal adapted to guide an indentor of a crimping tool into a predetermined position over a crimp area of an electrical contact in the member. The second section includes a conductor receiving section of the electrical contact, the conductor receiving section having a diameter adapted to receive a center conductor of the cable. Each crimp area is located on the conductor receiving section, wherein an electrical connection is formed by crimping the electrical contact to the conductor at each crimp area using the indentors. The crimped connection provides a substantially matched impedance in that section of the connector.

Coaxial cable connector

A right-angle coaxial electrical connector (22) mountable to a circuit board includes a housing (24) having a plurality of contact-receiving passageways (32) and at least two coaxial contacts (36, 38) disposed in the same column defining a stacked configuration. Each coaxial contact (36, 38) includes an inner terminal and an outer conductor, the inner terminal including a right angle body portion (46) extending outwardly of the housing (24) and concluding in a first connecting portion (44) adapted for mounting to the circuit board. A metal shell (64) having two interlocking halves joinable at opposed assembly faces is disposed over the outwardly extending body portion (46) of the inner terminal thereof and engageable with the outer conductor for connection to ground. In one embodiment, the inner terminal is comprised of two terminal subassemblies (40, 52). As an alternative, the connector housing (222) could be used with an intermixture of board mountable contacts (36, 38) and cable terminated contacts (235).

A surface mountable electrical connector (20) includes an insulating housing (22) having a coaxial subassembly receiving cavity (54) extending thereinto to a cavity bottom (56) proximate the mounting face (28); a coaxial subassembly 60) having center and outer conductors (66, 76); and first and second contacts (82, 92) along the mounting face and extending into the housing to resilient inner ends (84, 94) exposed proximate the cavity bottom. The resilient inner ends are engaged by portions of the center and outer conductors (66, 76) at the insertion end of the coaxial subassembly (60) upon full insertion into the cavity. The first and second contacts (82, 92) include outer contact sections (88, 98) adapted to be surface mounted to a circuit board. The arrangement incorporates a coaxial contact into a multiple contact hybrid connector (20) fully surface mountable to a circuit board.

A method for crimping a terminal (30) to an end of an inner conductor (20) of a coaxial cable (10) so that the resulting crimp joint (22) is precisely located a selected distance rearwardly from a mating point of the contact section (32) with a complementary contact section of a mating terminal affixed to an other coaxial cable. The terminal includes an intermediate section (42) of selected length, reduced diameter and location between the body section (34) and the crimp joint (24), such that, in cooperation with a smaller diameter forward portion (218) of the bore of the connector outer shell (210) coextending therealong, a region of deliberate impedance mismatch results compensating for other mismatches of the coaxial connection for minimized overall mismatch. A locating fixture (100) affixed to crimping tool (50) has an aperture (102) includes a stop surface (130) which stops the terminal during insertion through the crimping port (56) of the crimping tool and into the aperture by abutting with a ledge (38) of terminal (30), resulting in a target portion (46) of the crimping barrel (40) being precisely opposed from the tool's reciprocating crimping dies (80,82) to be crimped. Mating connectors (202,302) are affixed to cables (200,300) containing the improved crimped terminals.

An RF coaxial connector is disclosed which has an internally floating member which allows both ends of the coaxial connection to remain fixed, with the floating section compensating for any necessary axial or radial float. The floating section includes a pin and socket connection where the pin and socket section has various regions of intentional impedance mismatch. The geometries of the pin and socket are specifically designed such that the reflections are substantially self cancelling at all frequencies and at all various longitudinal positions between the pin and socket section.

Method and apparatus for crimping an electrical terminal to a coaxial

A coaxial connector assembly (10) includes a plug (40) and jack (140) having respective inner and outer conductors matable at a mating interface. The mating interface (MI) includes a plurality of regions A,B,C of mismatched impedance having varying axial lengths defined by diameter changes of said inner and outer conductors of the plug (40) and jack (140) between respective dielectric bodies (50,162) thereof upon mating. A reduced diameter portion of the plug's outer conductor (52) inwardly from its leading end corresponds with an increased diameter of the plug's inner conductor (46) and is engaged by leading ends (176) of spring arms (170) of a reduced diameter leading end of the jack's outer conductor (160). The leading ends (176) of the spring arms (170) engage the inward surface of the reduced diameter portion of the plug's outer conductor (52) within a range of axial locations accommodating variations in the locations of the plug (40) and jack (140) upon full mating. The reduced diameter portion can be defined by a conductive sleeve (80) force fit within a front shell (52) forwardly of dielectric body (50) containing inner conductor (46) of the plug (40) until its leading edge (88) coincides axially with a shoulder (78) of the plug's inner conductor (46) between the pin contact section (62) and a larger diameter body section thereof.

An electrical connector (10) comprised of intermating halves (12, 80) including snap rings (58, 150), a shroud (50) and sleeve (140) of geometries allowing blind-mating of the connector halves with both halves being readily snapped into block apertures (68, 130) of housings with sufficient axial float to assure proper mating with varying parts tolerances, and with the snap rings not bound by an axial spring element (106) employed to take up such tolerance.

A connector assembly for connecting a triaxial cable to a coaxial cable. The assembly includes a first connector member supporting a plurality of triaxial connectors, and a second connector member matable with said first connector member and supporting a plurality of coaxial connectors. The second connector member includes an electrically conductive support member having a plurality of apertures within which the coaxial connectors are supported, and upon mating of the first and second connector members, the outer contact of each triaxial connector will engage the conductive support member of the second connector member to provide a grounding path to dissipate noise carried by the outer conductor of the triaxial cable. The remaining connections for the center contact and intermediate contact of the triaxial connector are made in a standard fashion to the center contact and outer contact of the coaxial connector. With the present invention, a triaxial cable can be used when desired to provide additional electromagnetic shielding and a greater reduction of noise levels, and a coaxial cable can be used when preferred such as to carry a signal into a housing and into circuitry wherein any noise retained on the outer conductor of a triaxial cable can interfere with proper operation of the circuitry electronics.

An electrical connector 12 for snap-in mounting in an aperture 19 of a panel 13, comprises, a connector body 60 having an outer contact 69 and a passageway 62 receiving an outer conductor 26 of a coaxial cable 21, a grip ring 66 wedged against an internal wall of said passageway 62 and surrounding said outer conductor 26, a center contact 67 having a rearward portion for fitted connection with a center conductor 27 of the coaxial cable 21, a tapered surface 102 on a front end of said connector body 60 for impingement by a complementary connector 14 during mating, a split retention ring 79 surrounding the connector body 60 and being compressible inwardly during insertion into the aperture 19 of said panel 13 and thereafter expansible outwardly to engage the panel 13, a coil spring 83 surrounding the connector body 60 and having one end biased against the connector body 60 and the other end biased against said ring 79 to force the ring 79 against the panel 13, and a flange 77 on the connector body 60 for engaging against the panel 13.
