A fishing reel is provided having a frame and an operating mechanism on the frame. The operating mechanism includes a line carrying spool that is mounted on the frame for rotation around a first axis. The frame has first and second frame parts spaced axially relative to the first axis. The line carrying spool has a shaft with a first end that is supported for rotation on the first frame part. The operating mechanism includes a first magnet on the first frame part and a second magnet on the spool. The first and second magnets are arranged to one of a) attract and b) repel each other to thereby exert a force on the spool and urges the spool axially relative to the frame as the spool is rotated.

A fishing reel with a frame having a first axis and forward and rear ends spaced axially relative to the first axis and an operating mechanism on the frame. The operating mechanism includes a line carrying spool, a rotor that is rotatable around the first axis relative to the frame, a bail assembly on the frame which is changeable between a cast position and a retrieve position, a rotor operator, and a drive train through which the rotor is rotated around the first axis in response to operation of the rotor operator. The operating mechanism further has a bail actuating system for moving the bail assembly from the retrieve position into the cast position. The bail actuating system includes a bail moving assembly which moves in a fore and aft direction relative to the frame, and a motion changing linkage which produces a force on the bail assembly that urges the bail assembly from the retrieve position towards the cast position as an incident of the bail moving assembly moving from a normal position forwardly relative to the frame into an opening position. The bail moving assembly has a portion that cooperates with the frame to guide the bail moving assembly between the normal and opening positions.

The crank assembly has a first element that is capable of being driven in rotation to effect operation of a fishing reel, a crank handle for imparting a rotational drive force to the first element, a securing element that is repositionable relative to the crank handle and first element between a first position and a second position, and a retainer element that is capable of being press fit into and maintained in an operative position relative to the crank handle and first element wherein the retainer element prevents the securing element from moving from the second position into the first position. The crank handle is mountable to and separable from the first element with the securing element in the first position. The securing element maintains the crank handle mounted to the first element with the securing element in the second position.

A fishing reel having a frame, a line carrying spool, first structure for mounting the line carrying spool to the frame for rotation about a first axis, and a reel operating mechanism that is placeable selectively in a) a cast state and b) a retrieve state. The reel operating mechanism includes a crank handle with a crank shaft and second structure responsive to operation of the crank handle for a) rotating the line carrying spool around the first axis to retrieve line onto the spool with the reel operating mechanism in a retrieve state and b) changing the reel operating mechanism from the cast state into the retrieve state. The second structure includes a slider that is movable relative to the frame between a first position with the reel operating mechanism in the retrieve state and a second position with the reel operating mechanism in the cast state. Third structure on the frame disengages the second structure to allow the line carrying spool to be rotated without operating the crank handle as an incident of the slider moving from its first position into its second position. Fourth structure cooperates between the slider and at least one of the frame and crank shaft for releasably maintaining the slider in the second position and for allowing the slider to be moved from the second position into the first position as an incident of the crank handle being operated. The fourth structure includes a kick lever and fifth structure cooperating between the kick lever and slider for both guiding relative pivoting movement between the kick lever and slider about a second axis and allowing limited movement of the kick lever relative to the slider in a path transversely to the second axis.

A fishing reel having a body, a line carrying spool, first structure for mounting the line carrying spool to the body, a rotor, second structure for mounting the rotor to the body for movement relative to the body around an axis as an incident of which line is wrapped by the rotor around the line carrying spool, a line control member, and third structure cooperating between the line control member and at least one of the reel body, rotor and spool for a) maintaining the line control member in an operative position on the fishing reel and b) guiding movement of the line control member relative to both the rotor and the line carrying spool as the fishing reel is operated with the line control member in the operative position. The line control member limits movement of line on the line carrying spool axially relative to the spool between the spool and the rotor.

The cooperating structure on the bail assembly and trip link includes a structure for moving the bail assembly from its cast position towards its retrieve position as an incident of the trip link moving from its fourth position into its third position. The trip link structure allows repositioning of the trip link relative to the rotor in the event that the trip link encounters the trip link actuator as the trip link moves from its third position towards its fourth position to thereby prevent jamming of the trip link by the trip link actuator and allow the trip link to move fully into its fourth position.

A fishing reel having a frame, a rotor mounted to the frame for rotation about a first axis, a line storage spool, structure for rotating the rotor, a bail assembly on the rotor having first and second bail arms mounted to the rotor for pivoting movement between (a) a first position wherein the bail assembly is in a retrieve position so that the bail directs line onto the line storage spool as the rotor is rotated and (b) a second position wherein the bail assembly is in a cast position, a trip link mounted to the rotor for movement relative to the rotor between third and fourth positions, cooperating structure on the bail assembly and trip link for moving the trip link from its third position into its fourth position as an incident of the bail assembly moving from its first position into its second position, and a trip link actuator on the reel frame and defining a shoulder that intercepts the trip link with the trip link in its fourth position and the rotor rotating in a first rotational direction about its axis and moves the trip link from its fourth position towards its third position. The cooperating structure on the bail assembly and trip link includes a structure for moving the bail assembly from its cast position towards its retrieve position as an incident of the trip link moving from its fourth position into its third position. The trip link structure allows repositioning of the trip link relative to the rotor in the event that the trip link encounters the trip link actuator as the trip link moves from its third position towards its fourth position to thereby prevent jamming of the trip link by the trip link actuator and allow the trip link to move fully into its fourth position.

The line holding structure includes a third arm pivotably attached to the rotor for movement between third and fourth positions and a fourth arm pivotably attached to the third arm. At least one of the third and fourth arms is engageable with line projecting off of the spool with the bail assembly in a cast position to thereby prevent line from freely paying off of the line storage spool.

The force exerting structure includes cooperating structure on the bail assembly and plate assembly for moving the bail assembly from its retrieve position into its cast position as the actuation plate moves from its retracted position into its extended position. There is cooperating structure on the bail actuator and plate assembly for moving the actuator plate into its extended position as the bail actuator is operated. The plate assembly resides at least partially within the internal rotor space with the annular plate in its extended position.

Apparatus for releasably attaching a tackle box (20) to a fishing pole (22) with the tackle box (20) being held in a desired position relative to the fishing pole (22). The tackle box (20) may include a container (34) a lid (63), and a handle (80). A channel (30) may be formed in one surface (32) of container (34) to releasably attach to the pole (22). The rotation of the tackle box (34) about the pole (22) may be prevented by a retainer (28). Methods of manufacturing and using a tackle box (20) are also presented.

Tackle box and method

A casting type fishing reel is disclosed and includes a spool having a transverse spool shaft and a frame about the area of the spool. The frame includes a plurality of spacer posts joining a pair of side frame plates and interengaged to maintain the frame plates in conjoint alignment and to provide easy separation and assembly of the frame plates. A clutch mechanism is provided for selective actuation to move a spool pinion gear out of engagement with the spool shaft, and automatically re-engages the pinion gear in response to rotation of the reel handle. A magnetic drag mechanism is provided and recessed within a side cover of the reel. The reel handle, the main gear train of the reel and an anti-reverse ratchet-pawl mechanism all are mounted as a unitary assembly on a side cover for the reel whereby the cover can be removed from the reel for access to the gear train and other interior reel components without removing the handle. Bolt-like retainers extend transversely through the reel to maintain the reel in assembly, one of the bolt-like retainers forming a guide for a level wind mechanism of the reel.

An improved fishing reel of the type having a first shaft with a rotational axis and a free end, a gear with a bore therethrough and mountable on the first shaft by direction of the first shaft free end through the gear bore and sliding of the gear axially in a first direction relative to the first shaft, at least one drag washer having a bore through which the first shaft extends and movable axially along the first shaft, a drag actuator rotatable in a first direction for advancing at least part of the drag actuator in the first direction to increase drag by moving the gear and one drag washer axially towards each other and rotatable oppositely to the first direction to decrease drag by allowing the gear and one drag washer to move away from each other. The improvement consists of structure separate from the drag actuator for blocking axial movement of at least one of the gear and one drag washer relative to the first shaft in a direction opposite to the first direction to thereby prevent escape of the one of the gear and one drag washer by axial movement relative to the shaft off of the free end of the first shaft.
