An exercise machine utilizes a mechanical brake to provide the principal resistance. A dynamoelectric machine has its rotor connected to the flywheel of the exercise machine and its stator rotatably mounted to the apparatus frame and connected to the actuation input of the mechanical brake. The torque applied between the rotor and stator of the dynamoelectric machine tends to turn the stator and thus actuates the mechanical brake. A control system is arranged to control the current flow through the dynamoelectric machine and thereby control actuation of the brake. This allows a small dynamoelectric machine to effectively control a very large resistance. The dynamoelectric machine may also be used as a motor to drive the apparatus. Thus, the control system can actuate the dynamoelectric machine either to apply drag or to drive the apparatus thereby provided through constant speed operation.

Exercise dynamometer

A muscle exercise and rahabilitation apparatus includes a movable fixture against which a force can be applied; a servo motor having an output shaft coupled to the fixture; a strain gauge effectively coupled between the output shaft and the fixture for producing a load signal corresponding to the force applied to the fixture; a speed detector for producing a velocity signal corresponding to the speed of the fixture; a closed loop servo circuit for controlling the motor in response to the load and velocity signals to regulate the velocity of the fixture; a limit circuit for preventing movement of the fixture past opposite limits; a storage circuit for storing limit signals corresponding to each limit; a limit setting circuit for enabling the storage circuit to store each limit upon movement of the fixture thereto; a position sensing circuit for producing a position signal corresponding to the position of the fixture; a deceleration circuit for slowing down movement of the fixture as the fixture approaches each limit, in response to the velocity, position and limit signals; detecting circuits for detecting a plurality of predetermined operational faults of the apparatus; an emergency stop circuit for terminating operation of the apparatus upon detection of some of the operation faults; a dynamic brake for braking the servo motor to stop movement of the fixture in response to the emergency stop circuit; and a stop circuit for controlling the motor to stop movement of the fixture upon detection of other operation faults.

Muscle exercise and rehabilitation apparatus

The present invention relates to an electrical circuit for current regulation in DC motors including a sensitivity control means therefor. The circuit includes a means for sensing a predetermined current level in the load of a DC motor. In combination therewith is a subcircuit for cutting-off the load current when the predetermined current level has been reached. Additionally, there is provided means for restoring the load current when, after load current cutoff, the inductive motor current has fallen to a level sufficient to restart the subcircuit.

The present invention constitutes an electrical mounting and conduction means having a support element having a generally U-shaped interior surface, the base of the exterior of the support element being in thermal contact with a heat dissipating surface; a carrier element having a generally U-shaped exteriorsurface, the surface having a cross-section of smaller dimension than that of the U-shaped surface of the support element, the carrier element being nestable within the support element; and locking means removably securable to adjacent arm members of each of the support and carrier elements for maintaining the support and carrier elements in selective securement to each other.
