This invention relates to a height measurement apparatus for determining volume/density of wood chips on a conveyor. This invention relates to an apparatus and method for determining paperboard thermal conductivity. Such structures of this type, generally, determine the thermal conductivity of a planar material, such as paperboard or insulating foams. The apparatus is designed to characterize the heat flow from a heated brass cylinder, through a flat paperboard sample, and into another brass cylinder. The brass cylinders are fully insulated, except at the sample interface. During the test, which is in a transient state, the hot mass loses energy, raising the temperature of the cooler mass as the two masses approach an intermediate equilibrium temperature. Knowing that the brass masses are fully insulated, except for the heat transfer interface, and knowing the physical properties of the masses, the only unknown in the mathematical model describing the experiment is the thermal conductivity, k, of the paperboard sample, which enables its determination.

To protect the paper machine fourdrinier screen, deckle blades are fabricated with a soft polymer (polytetrafluoroethylene) lower edge having little adhesive affinity for either papermaking fiber or traditional plastic bonding compounds. Necessary structural rigidity is contributed to the assembly by a mechanical cladding of suitably stiff polymer plates that are adhesively bonded to a compatible plastic mounting body.

Flocs of papermaking fiber are dispersed by a multiplicity of white-water jets directed into a papermachine headbox prior to the slice opening. Jet direction is oriented counter-flow to the papermaking stock slice flow to create maximum turbulence, fluid shear and energy dissipation. Such jets issue from nozzle orifices in the slice profiling bar and are supplied with fluid through a two-stage manifold system. To preserve vertical plane pliability of the conduit-connected profiling bar, section area of the profiling bar between nozzles is minimized. Self sealing, push fit, fluid conduit connections with the jet nozzle orifices are made with flexible conduits between a sectional bar type of intermediate header and the profiling bar.

The lateral edges of a papermachine forming fabric pond are contained by a deckle board having a bottom edge positioned above the forming fabric upper surface elements but below the fabric supported stock pond surface. Lateral edges of the forming fabric run under the deckle board and upon an edge support beam within an elongated fluid channel between the outside surfaces of the deckle board structure and the inside surfaces of the edge support beam. Fluid flow within the elongated fluid channel, preferably independent of the papermachine headbox slice opening, supplies the elongated fluid channel volume for a fluid barrier to pond stock loss under the deckle board bottom edge.
