A ratchet wrench has a through cavity in which a reversing lever is disposed. The reversing lever has a pair of protruding lips formed thereon opposite from one another. A cooperating ledge is formed on the head in the cavity and on the pawl which is adjacent to the reversing lever. A spring-loaded pusher is disposed longitudinally in a blind bore in the reversing lever and the pusher engages a pocket in the pawl. A cover plate is disposed on a shelf recessed on the bottom of the wrench and spaced apart from the reversing lever.

A ratcheting tool includes a body, a compartment defined by the body, a gear rotatably disposed in the compartment, and a pawl. The pawl, disposed within the tool, selectively prevents the tool from rotating in one direction while allowing rotation in the opposite direction. The gear defines a plurality of vertically curved teeth. The pawl defines a plurality of vertically curved teeth. The pawl teeth are curved in a manner that mates with the gear teeth. A radius of curvature of the edges of the gear teeth is greater than the radius of curvature of the edges of the pawl teeth.

A ratcheting tool includes a body and a gear disposed in the body. The gear defines a plurality of teeth on a circumference of the gear so that the gear teeth define a first arc having a first radius. A pawl is disposed in the body so that the pawl is movable laterally with respect to the gear between a first position, in which the pawl is disposed between the body and the gear so that the body transmits torque through the pawl in a first rotational direction, and a second position, in which the pawl is disposed between the body and the gear so that the body transmits torque through the pawl in an opposite rotational direction. The pawl defines a plurality of teeth facing the gear, and the pawl teeth define a second arc having a second radius larger than the first radius.

A method is provided for forming a pawl pocket in a ratcheting tool wherein a keyway cutter at the end of an elongated pin removes material from the neck portion of a wrench. When removing material from the tool's neck portion, a predetermined path of the keyway cutter defines two flat surfaces on respective opposing sides of the pawl pocket, with each flat surface forming an angle preferably in the range of about 27 to 35 degrees between a centerline of the pawl pocket and the flat surfaces themselves.

A ratcheting tool includes a body and a gear disposed in the body. The gear defines a plurality of teeth on a circumference of the gear. A pawl is disposed in the body so that the pawl is movable with respect to the gear between a first position, in which the body transmits torque through the pawl in a first rotational direction, and a second position, in which the body transmits torque through the pawl in an opposite rotational direction. The pawl defines a plurality of teeth facing the gear and engages a reversing lever that urges the pawl between the first and second positions. The reversing lever comprises a handle portion and bottom portion that receives a clip spring. The detent urges the pawl between the first and second position by engaging the walls of a recess in the back of the pawl.
