A cellular radiotelephone or MS (100) includes an international mobile station identification including a mobile country code MCC, a mobile network code MNC, an area code MIN2 and a local number MIN1, all of which are stored in the EEPROM memory (124) of the MS. In the IMSI signaling system, a unique MIN1 coded number in the IMSIQ field of access and order messages is used to identify an IMSI access message from an IMSI MS or an IMSI order message from an IMSI base station or BS. In receiving order messages, an IMSI MS first looks for its MIN1, and if not found, then looks for unique MIN1 coded number in the IMSIQ field. If the unique MIN1 coded number is detected, the IMSI MS then looks for MIN1 in the last word of the message.

International mobile station identification method and signaling system

A portable radiotelephone (101) cooperatively operates with a cordless base station (115) over the local coverage area using cellular frequency channels. Both the portable radiotelephone (101) and the cordless base station (115) scan the available channels to generate separate priority lists. The portable radiotelephone (101) and the cordless base station (115) categorize the available channels in its own priority list from best to worst. The priority list from both the portable radiotelephone (101) and the cordless base station (115) are combined to form a master priority list. The cordless telephone system then assigns the clearest available channel from the master priority list for use in the cordless telephone system. Thus, interference to and from the cellular system and other users of the cellular frequencies is minimized and the need for frequency planning is eliminated.

A data-transmission system (100) including a master device (101) and at least one slave device (105) communicates messages having an address (1503, 1505) and data (1100) from the slave device (105) to the master device (101). A dual mode cellular cordless portable radiotelephone preferentially selects the cordless base station over the cellular system when in range of the cordless base station. When the cordless cellular portable is operating in the cellular mode, the radio channel associated with the cordless base station is sampled for a predetermined time. When a signal on the sampled cordless base station channel is detected, the cordless portable moves to the cordless mode and remains in the cordless mode for as long as the signal quality of the signal on the cordless base station channel exceeds a predetermined value.

A method for locating variable control channels by a mobile station (104) in a radiotelephone system (100) permits the mobile station (104) to quickly find the location of unknown control channels. A locator beacon (300) is transmitted on one or more common locator channels from each base station (102) or from a locator transmitter which covers the entire region. The locator beacon (300) includes control channel location information which defines the location in the spectrum of a designated control channel. A mobile station (104), including a roaming mobile station outside its home service area, tunes to the locator channel and detects the locator beacon (300) to read the control channel location information. In response, the mobile station (104) tunes to the frequency of the designated control channel to receive a control signal from the base station (102). To prevent co-channel interference, the base stations of a radiotelephone system (100) time division duplex the broadcast of respective locator beacons.

A method and apparatus is provided for facilitating scanning of radio control channels where a plurality of communication systems conjunctively cover the same area. A subscriber unit receives an overhead message train on a control channel which includes a channel count representing the number of control channels of a communication system. Subsequently, the subscriber unit scans a channel count number of control channels to tune to a control channel being used by a communication system having coverage for the subscriber unit. This scanning of control channels starts with a predetermined start control channel which corresponds to the logical number of the control channel in a sequence of control channels which is after the channel count control channel. In addition, an apparatus may be provided to transmit, in the overhead message train, a subscriber unit control message with an address indicating that a communication system is operating within a coverage area.

Method and apparatus for determining a serving communication system

The process of the present invention error corrects sub-audible data words that have been transmitted over a voice channel. A data word may be transmitted up to three times if an acknowledge is not received by the transmitter. If any of the three possible repeats of the received data word are decodable, an acknowledgment is transmitted. If all three repeats of the data word contain uncorrectable errors, a bitwise majority vote is performed on the three data words. If the result of the majority vote is decodable, an acknowledgement is transmitted to the sender.

A portable radiotelephone with a keypad, alphanumeric character display, and hands free function is disclosed. A movable flip element of the housing covers a keypad and other control buttons when in a closed, on-hook, position and activates the illumination of the keypad, enables the display, and enables the hands free function when in an open, off-hook, position. The duration of keypad illumination and display activation are timed to reduce battery drain and the hands free function may be deactivated with a hookswitch flash.

Control of the voice recognition circuit is achieved with a foldable housing element which, in a closed position, covers an external keypad and control buttons. When the foldable housing element is in an open position, the portable radiotelephone is placed in an off-hook condition, the voice recognition circuit is activated, and the acoustic transducers are coupled to the voice recognition circuit. When the foldable element is in a closed position, the portable radiotelephone is placed in an on-hook condition, the voice recognition circuit is deactivated, and the electroacoustic transducers are coupled to the radiotelephone. A rapid closing and opening of the foldable element results in the voice recognition circuit being deactivated while the portable radiotelephone remains in the off-hook condition.

If the new number is not selected or the identification code is not found in memory, the radiotelephone becomes a roaming unit and enters an idle state (107) waiting for an incoming call.
