Information about a drug-containing vessel is determined by capturing image data of the curved surface of a cylindrical portion of a drug-containing vessel. The image data is unfurled from around the curved surface, binarised, and a template matching algorithm employed to determine that the label information comprises candidate information about the vessel and/or the drug.

Method and apparatus for determining information about a drug-containing vessel

Apparatus and methods for performing optical analyses in a harsh environment are disclosed. Some of the systems and methods of the present disclosure include fluorescence, absorption, and reflectance detection using a drum spectrometer. Other systems and methods of the present disclosure include a measurement channel and a parallel reference channel concurrently filtering optical signals.

A device for determining the composition of a mixture of fluids that flow along a pipe includes: a radiation source for illuminating the mixture with radiation; a detector for detecting radiation that has been attenuated by the mixture; and a device for monitoring the flow rate of fluid along the pipe and outputting a signal indicative of the flow rate. The device for determining further includes a device for adjusting the intensity of radiation emitting by the radiation source in response to the signal indicative of the flow rate so that the intensity of the radiation source is reduced if the flow rate reduces.

Device and method for determining the composition of a mixture of fluids

A device for determining the composition of a mixture of fluids by spectral absorption, comprises: a radiation source; a detector for detecting radiation that has been attenuated by the mixture; and a device for separating the radiation into a wavelength band corresponding to an absorption band of one of the fluids, a wavelength band corresponding to an absorption band of another of the fluids, and at least one reference wavelength band substantially adjacent to each of the absorption bands, and especially adjacent to each side of the absorption band or group of absorption bands. The device may be used to determine the composition of mixtures of oil, water and gaseous hydrocarbons in oil wells where there is a very large degree of time varying scattering e.g. Rayleigh and Mie scattering due to turbulence.

A device is provided for use with a tissue penetrating system and/or a metering device for measuring analyte levels. The device comprises a cartridge and a plurality of analyte detecting members mounted on the cartridge. The cartridge may have a radial disc shape. The cartridge may also be sized to fit within the metering device. The analyte detecting members may be optical system using fluorescence lifetime to determine analyte levels. In one embodiment, the device may also include a fluid spreader positioned over at least a portion of the analyte detecting member to urge fluid toward one of the detecting members. A plurality of analyte detecting members may be used. Each analyte detecting member may be a low volume device.

Method and apparatus using optical techniques to measure analyte levels

A photometric device for investigating a sample, comprises an array of radiation sources that are spaced apart from one another, and which are operable to generate radiation that differs from that generated by the other radiation sources in the array. The device includes a lens arrangement for focusing the radiation at a region of space where a sample may be located for example by means of a sample holder, and at least one detector for receiving radiation from the region of space. Preferably, a number of detectors are employed that are spaced apart from one another, and especially about an axis of the device, so that one radiation detector can detect radiation transmitted by the sample and the other detectors can detect radiation scattered by it. The radiation sources may be time division multiplexed so that in each time slot the detectors receive radiation originating from each radiation source. In an alternative embodiment, the radiation from the region of space may be transmitted to the sample via a beam homogeniser, for example an optical waveguide in the form of an optical fibre, which may be used to reduce or remove speckle where laser diodes are employed as the radiation sources. The device may be used to determine the particle size distribution of particles in a sample by a method employing Bayesian inference.

Device and method for measuring scattering of radiation

A barcode reader and processing circuitry are disclosed for identifying a position of a cylinder rod, for example, along a path of movement. The barcode is marked on a surface of the rod and constitutes a series of markings extending along a portion of the length of the rod. The markings represent encoded information based on numbers calculated with a random number generator, and are grouped into subsets, each of which corresponds to a particular rod position. A portion of the rod including a subset of barcode markings is exposed to light emitted from the reader. Light reflected off the barcode is sensed with an array of photosensors provided in the reader. The photosensors generate electrical signals, and using Bayesian probability, a likely subset of markings is determined corresponding to the received electrical signals. Once identified, the markings subset is associated with a location corresponding to the position of the rod. A barcode reader is also described that is relatively easy to assemble and provides uniform illumination of the barcode.

The present invention concerns an interferometer comprising: an optical body adapted in operation to mount a measurement area comprising a film which is capable of acting as a two dimensional environment for surface plasmons and an adjacent reference area; an optical beam generation means for irradiating the reference and measurement areas with radiation capable of generating surface plasmon resonance; optical means for combining radiation reflected from the reference and measurement areas, and pixelated detection means for generating data representing two dimensional images of the combined radiation beams.

An optical detection device for validating bank notes has several input apertures, an imagine device (), a diffraction grating () associated with each input aperture () and a detection array (). The diffraction grating () is rotated at angle of e.g.degrees relative to the orientation of the linear detection array (). This arrangement enables the spectra of multiple points to be measured simultaneously. The angle of rotation, the pitch of the apertures () and a pitch of the diffraction grating (15.1, 15.2, 15.3) are selected in such a way that the spectra of said multiple points are contiguously mapped onto the detection array () having a single linear array of color sensitive detection pixels. The axis of the linear array is offset with respect to an optical axis () of the optical detection device.

The invention concerns an interferometric optical block for Fourier Transform spectrometers having three planar nominally parallel surfaces with the two outer surfaces adapted to act as beam reflectors for internal light and the third surface in operation acting as a beam splitter and beam combiner, the optical block having an input portion by means of which an input beam of light to be analysed can be input so as partially to pass through said third surface to be internally reflected by one of said outer reflectors, and partially to be reflected by said third surface so as then to be internally reflected by the other of said outer reflectors whereby light internally reflected by said outer reflectors is combined at said third surface to produce an exit beam, and wherein said outer surfaces have an inclination with respect to one another so as to make a variation in path lengths in the light forming the exit beam so as to generate an interference fringe field.

Fourier transform spectrometer using an optical block

The present case concerns the manufacture of hybrid electrooptical chips. A substrate is treated so that it can both provide locations for electrooptical components and be etched so as to generate grooves in which optical fibers can be mounted. During the etching of the grooves any electrooptical component already mounted on the substrate is protected from damage by the etchant by a protective coating. A feature is that optical fibers can be mounted with their cores above the surface of the wafer.

A method for particle size detection comprises passing particles in a fluid medium relative to a light source which generates a light field the optical axis of which is transverse to the direction of fluid movement relative to the said light source and having a plurality of non-interferometrically formed variations in intensity spaced along the direction of movement of the particles relative to the light field, detecting variations in light intensity caused by the particles as they pass through the variations in the light field, and measuring the size of a detected particle substantially independently of the optical characteristics of the particle by plotting the mean peak signal as a function of the normalised peak-to-trough variation in the output pulses generated by the passages of the particle through the light field.
