A gas turbine engine having an improved air delivery system that includes features for pressurizing and/or cooling various components of the engine while minimizing the impact to the cycle efficiency of the engine, reducing the weight of the engine, and reducing the specific fuel consumption of the engine is provided.

Air delivery system for a gas turbine engine

An engine or engine casing having an inner annular case and an outer annular case. The engine casing is formed using an additive manufacturing technique such that the inner annular case and outer annular case is formed surrounding a hollow inner annular cavity. The annular cavity includes a pin bank connecting the inner annular case and outer annular case. The pin bank improves heat transfer between the inner and outer annular case and provide structural support to the inner and outer annular case. By providing fluid flow through the annular cavity, the turbine casing can be cooled and the radius of the casing can be controlled through the regulation of fluid travelling within the annular cavity. By controlling the fluid flow though the annular cavity, the engine case may be cooled to regulate its temperature in a wide variety of operating conditions. Further, the regulation of fluid in the annular cavity allows for active clearance control of the spacing between the turbine blades or vanes and seals used in the turbine.

A turbine frame assembly for a gas turbine engine includes: (a) a turbine frame including: (i) an outer ring; (ii) a hub; (ii) a plurality of struts extending between the hub and the outer ring; (b) a two-piece strut fairing surrounding each of the struts, including: (i) an inner band; (ii) an outer band; and (iii) an airfoil-shaped vane extending between the inner and outer bands; (d) a plurality of nozzle segments disposed between the outer ring and the hub, each nozzle segment being an integral metallic casting including: (i) an arcuate outer band; (ii) an arcuate inner band; and (ii) an airfoil-shaped vane.

A turbine nozzle includes radially inner and outer bands integrally joined to opposite ends of an airfoil. The outer band has forward and aft hooks extending radially outwardly at axially opposite ends. And the hooks have different prechorded circumferential curvatures.

A service tube apparatus for a gas turbine engine includes a service tube assembly having: (a) an elongated, hollow service tube; and (b) a service tube baffle surrounding the service tube which is pierced with a plurality of impingement cooling holes.

A gas turbine engine centrifugal compressor axial forward thrust apparatus bleeds impeller tip aft bleed flow from between an annular centrifugal compressor impeller of a high pressure rotor and a diffuser directly downstream of the impeller. The apparatus then uses the aft bleed flow to pressurize an annular cavity extending radially between an inner combustor casing and the rotor and extending axially between forward and aft thrust balance seals. Forward and aft thrust balance lands are in sealing engagement with the forward and aft thrust balance seals on the high pressure rotor respectively. An annular stator plenum in fluid communication with the annular cavity is bounded in part by a forward end wall having conical diffusion holes therethrough which may be axially or circumferentially or axially and circumferentially angled. The forward thrust balance seal may be on an aft conical arm of the impeller.

Centrifugal compressor forward thrust and turbine cooling apparatus

A gas turbine engine turbine cooling system includes an impeller and a diffuser directly downstream of the impeller, a bleed for bleeding clean cooling air from downstream of the diffuser, and one or more channels in fluid communication with the bleed. Each of the channels having a generally radially extending section followed by a generally axially aftwardly extending section terminating at an annular cooling air plenum connected to accelerators. The radially and axially aftwardly extending sections may be connected by a bend section of the cooling air channel and the axially aftwardly extending section may be angled radially inwardly going from the bend section to the cooling air plenum. Each of the cooling channels includes an inner wall formed by a forward end wall extending radially outwardly from an inner combustor casing, an annular cover covering a radially inner portion of the forward end wall, and the inner combustor casing.

A gas turbine engine includes a compressor rotor assembly which directs air at a sufficient pressure and temperature to a downstream turbine for cooling. The compressor assembly includes a compressor including an impeller and a cooling circuit. The impeller includes an exit, an inlet, and a body extending therebetween. The impeller body includes a first opening positioned a distance from the impeller exit. The cooling circuit extends between the compressor and the turbine and is in flow communication with the impeller opening.
