Provided is a catalyst support structure for use as either a NOx catalyst support or as a DPF having a hydrophobic coating. The hydrophobic coating affords a catalyst support structure exhibiting reduced or low absorption when exposed to both liquid catalytic coating or other aqueous media and thus protecting the catalyst support structure from cracking and spalling during drying. Methods are also provided for making a catalyst support structure with a hydrophobic coating.

Ceramic structures having hydrophobic coatings

A cement mixture suitable for use with ceramic honeycomb bodies, such as for forming an outer layer on the outer periphery of the honeycomb body, or for forming plugs in the honeycomb body. The cement mixture, when fired, preferably exhibits low coefficient of thermal expansion and high strength. The cement mixture can be applied to a green honeycomb body and simultaneously fired with the green body or can be applied to an already fired ceramic honeycomb body and then fired. Includes cement mixture comprising a plurality of inorganic components comprising talc, kaolin, alumina, silica, and aluminum hydroxide, wherein the mixture contains less than or equal to 18.0% silica and greater than or equal to 17.0% aluminum hydroxide, in percent by weight of the inorganic components.

Low thermal expansion high strength honeycomb cement and method therefor

Disclosed are cements for ceramic honeycomb bodies. Such cements can be applied to a fired ceramic honeycomb body then fired, or can be applied to an unfired (green) honeycomb body and co-fired with the green honeycomb body. The cement can also be used to plug one or more cells in a honeycomb body, wherein the cement can be inserted into a green or a fired ceramic honeycomb body, then fired. Also disclosed are methods of manufacturing a ceramic honeycomb article with the cement.

Disclosed are plugging mixtures for a ceramic wall flow filter, comprising an aluminum titanate precursor reactive batch composition including an alumina source, a silica source, and a titania source; a sintering aid; an organic binder; and a liquid vehicle. Also disclosed are ceramic wall flow filters comprised of end plugs formed from the plugging mixtures of the present invention and methods for the manufacture thereof.

Plugging material for aluminum titanate ceramic wall flow filter manufacture

A method for forming honeycomb structures, such as wall-flow honeycomb filters, which utilizes extrusion of multiple material supplies at once. Such methods may be used to form intermittent plugs or other structures in the cell channels during the extrusion process, for example. A die assembly is provided which includes secondary feedholes machined in the pins for intermittently or periodically injecting secondary material (e.g., plug material) into the cell channels of the honeycomb structure while it is being extruded.

Die assembly and method for forming honeycomb filters

A method for plugging a selected subset of cell channels of a honeycomb structure having a multiplicity of mutually adjoining cell channels which have open ends at and extend throughout the structure between opposing end faces thereof. The method includes (a) loading a powdered plugging material into open end portions of cell channels at one end face of the honeycomb structure, wherein the powdered plugging material passes the length of the cell channels to settle at opposing end portions of the cell channels; (b) compacting the powdered plugging material in the cell channels at the one end face of the honeycomb structure; (c) scanning the one end face of the honeycomb structure to locate the selected subset of cell channels to be plugged; (d) generating in response to the scanning step first signals indicating the location of the selected subset of cell channels; (e) generating in response to the first signals second signals for positioning a laser with respect to the selected subset of cell channels; (f) positioning the laser with respect to the selected subset of cell channels, wherein the laser generates energy which adherently bonds the compacted plugging material to surrounding cell walls to form plugs thereat; and, (g) removing the remaining compacted plugging material from all but the selected subset of cell channels which have been plugged.

Method for selectively plugging a honeycomb

This invention is primarily directed to edged three-layer ophthalmic lenses having a coating covering the edge of the lens. The coating provides a cushion between the lens and an eyeglass frame and inhibits the penetration of moisture and tints commonly used to fashion tint ophthalmic lenses. The coating comprises a dimethyl silicone coblocked with vinyl with crosslinking therein being provided through a platinum-catalyzed addition reaction. The inventive coating also imparts advantageous properties to single element glass and plastic lenses.

Edge coating for laminated lenses

A mask apparatus for charging flowable materials into selected cells of a honeycomb structure comprising a solid body having a number of openings extending therethrough which are spaced to coincide with the open ends of the selected cells exposed at the structure's end face, after the mask is positioned across the end face, the flowable material is charged through its openings. In one embodiment, a rigid plate having a number of bores therethrough is provided for charging a plastically formable plugging material into a honeycomb structure in the fabrication of solid particulate filter bodies and other selectively manifolded structures. In a preferred embodiment, a thin transparent polyester film is attached to an open surface of a honeycomb structure and openings melted therethrough. In a second preferred embodiment, a monolithic mask is formed from a flexible elastic polymer and, in addition to openings, has flexible protrusions which assist in aligning the mask on the structure and temporarily plug the cells into which they are inserted preventing them from being inadvertently charged.

Method for selectively charging honeycomb structures

There is disclosed a sintered, alpha-cordierite solid solution glass-ceramic body in which the properties of coefficient of thermal expansion and modulus of rupture are stabilized and controlled by using a combination of two dopants in the glass during sintering and crystallization. There is further disclosed the method of producing such bodies, and controlling such properties, through the use of the two dopants.

Sintered glass-ceramic body and method

This invention is directed to the preparation of glass-ceramic materials especially suitable for use in multilayer substrates for integrated circuit packages. The inventive glass-ceramics are derived from thermally crystallizable glass which, in the form of frit, are capable of being sintered into an integral body at temperatures below 1000.degree. C. and essentially concurrently crystallized in situ to yield BPO.sub.4 as the predominant crystal phase. The inventive glass-ceramics exhibit a linear coefficient of thermal expansion between about 30-45.times.10.sup.-7 /.degree.C., a dielectric constant less than 5, and consist essentially, in weight percent, of 10-25% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 20-40% P.sub.2 O.sub.5, and &gt;50-65% SiO.sub.2.

Glass-ceramic substrates for electronic packaging

This invention is particularly directed to the preparation of inorganic ceramic laminated structures for use as substrates in integrated circuit packages. One lamina is composed of a high thermal conductivity material, the second lamina is composed of a low thermal conductivity material having a dielectric constant below 10, a sintering temperature below 1050.degree. C., and a linear coefficient of thermal expansion compatible with that of the other lamina, and a bonding medium sealing the two laminae together exhibiting flow at a temperature below the sintering temperature of the second lamina and a linear coefficient of thermal expansion compatible with those of the two laminae.

Composite substrate for integrated circuits

A sintered, honeycomb structure having plugged cell ends is formed in a single sintering step by plugging the cell ends of a sinterable honeycomb structure with an appropriate material which, when heated to the sintering temperature of the structure and compared with any dimensional changes the structure undergoes during its sintering, provides a relative expansion of the plugs with respect to the structure of between about 1.5% and 7% and, preferably, between about 2 and 4%. Various exemplary batch mixtures are identified for fabricating solid particulate filter bodies from extruded ceramic substrates in which both the substrate and plugs sinter to primarily cordierite crystal phases at temperatures between about 1340.degree. C. and 1450.degree. C.

Method of fabricating a sintered and selectively plugged honeycomb

Methods for selectively plugging cells of a honeycomb structure for the fabrication of solid particulate filter bodies and other applications in which plugs are first formed at one end of all of the cells of the structure and then are removed from the ends of some of the cells by moving the plugs in those cells through the structure to their opposing ends or by removing those plugs entirely from the cells and the structure. The former method suitably positions plugs to form a filter body. The latter method must be repeated at both open end faces of the honeycomb structure in order to form a filter body. The latter method may be practiced by removing the plugs with a vacuum or by pushing the plugs out or through and out the structure. The invention also includes several apparatus embodiments for removing/moving a selected subset of the plugs formed in the same end portion of a multiplicity of cells of a honeycomb structure.

Methods for fabricating selectively plugged honeycomb structures

Foamable particulate cement is capable of forming sintered cordierite foamed ceramic masses. It consists essentially, by weight, of 1-40% cordierite grog, 99-60% ceramic base material and foaming agent, such as SiC. The ceramic base material is raw ceramic material that has an analytical molar composition consisting essentially of about 1.7-2.4 MO . 1.2-2.4 Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 . 4.5-5.4 SiO.sub.2 wherein MO comprises about 0-55 mole % MgO and at least 45 mole % MnO. The grog is ceramic material that has been previously fired and comminuted, and that has an analytical molar composition consisting essentially of about 1.7-2.4 RO . 1.9-2.4 Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 . 4.5-5.2 SiO.sub.2 wherein RO comprises MnO in an amount of 0 mole % up to a mole % that is about 20 mole % lower than the mole % of MO that is MnO and the balance is substantially MgO.
