The invention is in the field of catalysis. More specifically, the invention relates to a process for preparing a protected metal catalyst on a support; a matrix particle comprising the protected metal catalyst; and, a process for hydrogenating a hydrocarbon resin feedstock using the protected metal catalyst.

Process for preparing protected resin catalysts

The invention is in the field of catalysis. More specifically, the invention pertains to catalytic hydrogenation processes and catalysts used therein. According to the invention there is provided a process for the hydrogenation of hydrocarbon resins, in particular hydrocarbon resin feeds with a relatively high sulfur content using a cobalt promoted nickel on silica/alumina catalyst, the catalyst per se, and the process of preparing said catalyst.

The invention relates to a process for producing a protected reduced supported metal catalyst powder, in particular catalysts used in a variety of chemical reactions, such as the hydrogenation of hydrocarbon compounds in petrochemical and oleochemical processes; the hydrogenation of unsaturated fats and oils, and unsaturated hydrocarbon resins; and in the Fischer Tropsch process. The invention relates to a catalyst comprising nickel and a solid silica support, to a process for preparing such a catalyst and to a process for the hydrogenation of an unsaturated fatty material. According to the invention there is provided a catalyst comprising nickel on a solid silica support, wherein said catalyst has a specific pore volume of at least 0.4 ml/g and a TPR peak maximum within the range of 360-420&#xb0; C.

Hydrogenation of fatty acids using a promoted supported nickel catalyst

The invention is directed to a process for the hydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids to produce saturated fatty acids, said process comprising hydrogenating the unsaturated fatty acid in the presence of hydrogen and a supported nickel catalyst, said supported nickel catalyst comprising an oxidic support, 5 to 80 wt. % of nickel, calculated as metallic nickel on the weight of the catalyst, and 0.1 to 10 wt. % of a manganese promoter, calculated as MnOon the weight of the catalyst.
