A method of performing speech recognition to determine a particular alphabetic character can include receiving acoustic spoken input including a single alphabetic character and a word association with the single character such that the first character of the word is intended to be the same as the single alphabetic character. The acoustic input can be processed using a speech vocabulary recognition system to recognize the single alphabetic character and the word. An attempt to match the single alphabetic character with the first character of the word can be made and, responsive to an unsuccessful attempt at matching the single character with the first character of the word, information relating to the unsuccessful attempt can be stored into a history of unsuccessful attempts. The stored history information can be used to determine the alphabetic character for the spoken input.

Speech recognition system

The present invention relates to a system and methods for automatic voice message processing and in particular to a system and method for processing voice messages to convert the voice mail to email and prioritise the e-mail according to acoustic features in the voice mail. Performing speech to text conversion on a voice message and then categorising the text has its problems. A keyword for the categorisation may not be present in the text if the speaker was in too much of a hurry when leaving a message, for instance if it was urgent or important. If the speaker talked too quickly or does not match the speech pattern word vocabulary then the keyword may not be recognised. It is not known to categorise a voice message based on the way in which a voice message is spoken or delivered by a caller.

System and method for automatic voice message processing

The invention relates to a large vocabulary speech recognition system with the ability to recognize alphanumeric sequences. The recognition system prompts the caller to spell out an alphanumeric sequence in the form &ldquo;letter for word&rdquo; (eg A for Apple) and then uses the first letter of the word in combination with the detected letter to determine the alphabetic character being spelt out. Once the complete sequence has been spelt out, it is played back for confirmation.

Speech encoding in a client server system such as a laptop, personal data assistant or mobile phone communicating with an interactive voice response telephony application. A method of communication with a speech enabled remote telephony device such as a mobile phone is described comprising the following steps. Receiving user speech input into the mobile phone as part of a dialogue with an interactive voice response telephony application. Performing speech recognition to convert the speech into text and converting the text into tones such as DTMF tones. Transmitting the DTMF tones over the voice channel to an interactive voice response (IVR) telephony application an allowed response feature converts the users response to a known valid response of the IVR application. A language conversion feature allows a person in one language to speak in that language to an IVR application operating in a different language.
