A printed circuit board (PCB) assembly is provided. The PCB assembly comprises a printed wiring board (PWB) and one or more electrical components mounted thereon. The PWB comprises a plurality of layers including conductive layers and insulative layers, where one or more of the insulative layers is a prepreg layer that is halogen-free; one or more slotted portions on a surface of the PWB, which are indented into the PWB; and one or more pads disposed on the surface of the PWB, which are paired with the one or more slotted portions. Each of the one or more electrical components is mounted on the surface of the PWB through a pair of a slotted portion and a pad.

A charging system for charging an electric vehicle comprises an inductor-inductor-capacitor (LLC) battery charger that includes an isolation transformer having a transformer primary and a transformer secondary, the transformer primary included in an inductive charger station of the charging system and the transformer secondary included in an inductive power receiver of the charging system, with the inductive power receiver positioned on the electric vehicle. The LLC battery charger also includes a magnetizing inductor circuit element and a leakage inductor circuit element integrated into the isolation transformer on the transformer primary. The isolation transformer is constructed such that the transformer primary and the transformer secondary are separable from one another, with a selective engaging and disengaging of the transformer primary and the transformer secondary based on movement of the inductive power receiver on the electric vehicle relative to the inductive charger station.

System and method for inductive charging with improved efficiency

A magnetic device is provided. The magnetic device includes a magnetic core and a conductive winding inductively coupled to the magnetic core. The conductive winding includes a first terminal segment, a second terminal segment, and an inductive segment electrically coupled in series therebetween. The first terminal segment includes a current sensing element.

Magnetic device having integrated current sensing element and methods of assembling same

A transformer, such as a current sense transformer, in which conductive traces disposed within a printed circuit board serve as the primary winding of the transformer. The transformer also includes a secondary winding, for example wound around a hollow pin of a bobbin, through which a leg of a magnetic core is disposed. The magnetic core leg, and in some embodiments also all or a part of the secondary winding, is inserted into a through-hole in the printed circuit board that is surrounded by the primary winding traces.

A magnetic core is provided. The magnetic core includes a magnetic base and a magnetic plate. The magnetic base includes a first U-core, a second U-core, and a spacing member. The first U-core has a relatively high magnetic permeability, and includes a first surface having a first winding channel defined therein. The second U-core has a relatively high magnetic permeability, and includes a second surface having a second winding channel defined therein. The first and second surfaces are substantially coplanar with one another. The spacing member is connected to the first and second U-cores such that a gap having a relatively low magnetic permeability is formed between the first and second U-cores. Multi-function inductor and manufacture thereof

A system is provided having a first LLC power converter and a second LLC power converter. The first LLC power converter comprises a first LLC voltage source. The second LLC power converter also comprises a second LLC voltage source. The first LLC power converter also comprises a first resonant inductor, a first magnetic inductor, and a first resonant capacitor coupled to the first voltage source of the first LLC power converter. The second LLC power converter comprises a second resonant inductor, a second magnetic inductor, and a second resonant capacitor coupled to the second voltage source of the second LLC power converter. The first LLC power converter and the second LLC power converter are both magnetically couplable to a common load. A resonance of the first LLC power converter substantially matches a resonance of the second LLC power converter.

Interleaved LLC power converters and method of manufacture thereof

An apparatus for establishing at least one turn for a magnetic circuit includes: (a) at least one first magnetic element oriented substantially about an axis generally between a first axial position and a second axial position; and (b) at least one second magnetic element coupled with at least one selected first magnetic element of the at least one first magnetic element generally at the second axial position. The at least one second magnetic element establishes at least one return magnetic path from the second axial position generally toward the first axial position. The at least one return magnetic path is generally about the axis.

An electromagnetic apparatus includes: (a) A magnetic material arranged in a core structure establishing a first flux path set and a second flux path set; the first flux path set includes a first middle flux path oriented about a first axis and two first side flux paths parallel with the first axis; the second flux path set includes a second middle flux path oriented about a second axis and two second side flux paths parallel with the second axis; the second axis is perpendicular with the first axis. The first and second flux path sets cooperate to establish open spaces. Each open space is bounded by portions of two flux paths from each of the first and second flux path sets. (b) A plurality of windings for conducting electrical current about the magnetic core structure. The windings are oriented around one axis on both sides of the other axis.

Electromagnetic apparatus and method for making a multi-phase high frequency electromagnetic apparatus

A magnetic device is provided that may be employed with surface mount technology. In an advantageous embodiment, the magnetic device includes a magnetic core having a magnetic core half and a springable winding positioned about at least a portion of the magnetic core half. The springable winding includes a terminus biased against the magnetic core half.

In one embodiment, the magnetic device includes: (1) a bobbin having a winding guide and molded-in margins proximate opposing inside flanges of the bobbin, each of the opposing inside flanges having at least one notch formed in an inside face of each of said opposing inside flanges; (2) an inner winding wound about the winding guide and between the molded-in margins; (3) an outer winding wound about the inner winding and the winding guide and between the flanges; and (4) an insulating plate, provided in the at least one notch and interposed between the inner and outer windings, a thickness of the insulating plate providing a predetermined creepage distance between at least one lead of the inner winding and the outer winding.

Magnetic device and method of manufacture therefor

A low-profile, surface mount magnetic component is described along with magnetic devices and power supplies using the magnetic components. The magnetic component is formed from a magnetic core which is surrounded by a plurality of conductive elements. The conductive elements fit into channels in the sides of the magnetic core, the channels having angled sides that increase in width from the top to the bottom. The conductive elements have their ends bent inwards against the bottom of the magnetic core to form surface mountable contact surfaces. A recess in the top of the magnetic core allows the conductive elements to be loaded before the ends are bent inward so that when the conductive elements are unloaded they fit tightly against the magnetic core and the conductive surfaces are coplanar.
