A method of reducing nitrogen oxides (NO) present in a lean gas stream comprising nitric oxide (NO) comprises the steps of: (i) net adsorbing NO per se from the lean gas stream in an adsorbent comprising palladium and a cerium oxide at below 200&#xb0; C.; (ii) thermally net desorbing NO from the NO adsorbent in a lean gas stream at 200&#xb0; C. and above; and (iii) catalytically reducing NOon a catalyst other than the NO adsorbent with a reductant selected from the group consisting of a hydrocarbon reductant, a nitrogenous reductant, hydrogen and a mixture of any two or more thereof. A system for carrying out such a method is also disclosed.

A wall-flow filter () for an exhaust system of a combustion engine comprises: a plurality of channels () in honeycomb arrangement, wherein at least some of the channels () are plugged () at an upstream end and at least some of the channels () not plugged at the upstream end are plugged () at a downstream end; an oxidation catalyst () on a substantially gas impermeable zone at an upstream end of the channels () plugged at the downstream end; and a gas permeable filter zone () downstream of the oxidation catalyst for trapping soot, characterised in that in an exhaust system, preferably a diesel exhaust system, the oxidation catalyst is capable of generating sufficient NOfrom NO to combust the trapped soot continuously at a temperature less than 400&#xb0; C.

Method for treating soot-containing exhaust

A wall-flow filter for an exhaust system of a combustion engine comprises: a plurality of channels in honeycomb arrangement, wherein at least some of the channels are plugged at an upstream end and at least some of the channels not plugged at the upstream end are plugged at a downstream end; an oxidation catalyst on a substantially gas impermeable zone at an upstream end of the channels plugged at the downstream end; and a gas permeable filter zone downstream of the oxidation catalyst for trapping soot, in that in an exhaust system, preferably a diesel exhaust system, the oxidation catalyst, which preferably includes a platinum group metal, is capable of generating sufficient NO from NO to combust the trapped soot continuously at a temperature less than 400&deg; C.

Catalytic wall-flow filter

A process for treating exhaust gas from internal combustion engines wherein the combustion exhaust gas contains HC, CO, O , soot and possibly NO . In treating the combustion exhaust gas, HC is oxidized to CO and H O: NO, if present, is oxidized to NO and soot is oxidized by reaction with NO . In addition, NO is generated by oxidizing ammonia and NO is introduced into the exhaust gas upstream of the oxidization of soot by reaction with NO .

Treatment of exhaust gas

A layered exhaust gas catalyst containing Pt in a first layer and Rb in a second layer is more selective for catalyzing the reaction between NO and/or nitrate with hydrocarbons and/or CO than for catalyzing the reaction between hydrocarbons and/or CO with oxygen. NO can be reduced to N under constant lean to stoichiometric conditions without the need for rich spikes.
