A new tip for a conventional lancer that provides for improved blood flow from a lancet puncture site not located on a patient's finger. The new lancer tip includes a plurality of crenellations that exert rotational force on the skin surrounding the lancet puncture site when the lancer is rotated to enhance blood flow from the lancet puncture site.

Alternate-site lancer

A self-contained electrolocation apparatus of the present invention includes an electrically conducting needle cannula having a proximal end, a distal end and a hollow bore therethrough. The invention further includes a non-conductive tube having a proximal end and a distal end, the tube being mounted over the needle cannula so that the distal end of the non-conductive tube is proximal to the distal end of the needle cannula. The non-conductive tube has a conductive layer thereon, whereby the needle cannula and the conductive layer respectively define first and second conductors coaxially spaced from one another by the non-conductive tube. There is a grip fixedly attached to the needle cannula for manipulating the apparatus. The grip has an electrical stimulus generator circuit within it that is electrically connected to the first conductor and the second conductor. The stimulus generator circuit is capable of applying a potential across the conductors so that when the needle is positioned in a patient's tissue and the electrical stimulus generator circuit is activated, the potential is sufficient to induce a preselected current thereby providing a charge pulse between the distal end of the conductive layer and the distal end of said needle cannula through the patient's tissue. The charge pulse is sufficient to induce a twitch response in the patient.

Bi-level charge pulse apparatus to facilitate nerve location during peripheral nerve block procedures

A medication delivery pen includes a housing having an actuator disposed in the proximal end of the housing for setting and administering a dosage of medication, a medication-containing cartridge assembly having a cartridge with a pierceably sealed distal end, an open proximal end removably attachable to the distal end of the housing, and a piston in sliding, fluid tight engagement within the cartridge. A drive mechanism is coupled between the actuator and the cartridge to exert an axial force on the piston to inject the set dosage of medication. The actuator triggers the drive mechanism to administer the injection of medication held in the cartridge and a processor is coupled to the actuator to determine a value equal to the dosage set by the actuator. The drive mechanism includes a pair of half nuts in rotational engagement with the actuator, a non-rotatable lead screw having a distal end for exerting the axial force on the piston to inject the set dosage of medication, a proximal end, and threads extending between the proximal and distal ends. The nuts open and close radially to selectively engage with the threads of the lead screw for axially advancing along the lead screw upon rotation of the actuator.

Medication delivery pen

A portable diagnostic and medication delivery system that includes a housing and a monitor disposed in the housing for monitoring a characteristic of a bodily fluid sample obtained from an individual. A medication delivery pen and a lancer are each removably mounted to the housing. The monitor, which may be integrated into the housing, may monitor blood glucose levels, for example, and the pen may be employed for the delivery of insulin.

An adapter for attaching a fluid handling device to a catheter tubing includes a body with a proximal end, a distal end and a passageway therethrough. The body has a proximal end that has a fitting for attaching a fluid handling device. The distal end of the body includes an elongate receptacle with an inside surface that has least one engagement lug. There is an elongate resilient member disposed within the receptacle with a first end and a second end and a coaxial passage therethrough. The passage has an inside diameter to accept and form a releasable substantially fluid tight connection to a preselected catheter tube. The resilient member has a first conjugate engagement to the receptacle engagement lug at the first end and a second engagement at the second end. The adapter also has a latch member disposed over the receptacle to contain the resilient member that has a distal axial access port therein to receive the catheter tube into the resilient member passage. The latch member has an inside surface with at least one second engagement lug for engaging the second end engagement of the resilient member. The latch member is disposed for rotatable movement with respect to the body between an insertion position and a latched position. The rotation of the latch member with respect to the body rotationally displaces the first end of the resilient member with respect to the second end of the resilient member, thereby decreasing the inside diameter of the resilient member passage.

Adapter for mounting a fluid handling device on a catheter tubing

An adapter of the present invention useful for attaching a fluid handling device to a catheter includes a body having a proximal end, a distal end and an open passageway therethrough. The passageway includes a seat to receive the catheter and a cavity distal to the catheter seat. There is a gasket disposed in the cavity to form a substantially fluid tight seal about the catheter when the catheter is positioned on the catheter seat. The adapter further includes a retainer, disposed on the distal end of the body over the gasket with an opening therethrough that is substantially aligned with the passageway. The opening is sufficient to allow the catheter to pass through into the passageway to engage the gasket and the catheter seat. The retainer has a plurality of flexible projections into the opening that are sized and shaped to engage the catheter and be proximally deflected by the placement of the catheter on the catheter seat. There is a rotatable collar disposed over the retainer on the proximal end of the body, with an open port therethrough that is substantially aligned with the passageway to allow placement of the catheter into the passageway. The collar has a plurality of proximal protuberances disposed to engage the flexible projections and to prevent distal flexion of the flexible projections on the retainer when the collar is in a first position with respect to the body thus to retaining the catheter in the adapter for attachment to a fluid handling device. Additionally, the protuberances are disposed not to engage the flexible projections when the collar is rotated to a second position with respect to the body thereby to allow a distal flexion of the projections and a withdrawal of the catheter from the adapter.

An electrolocation apparatus is provided for locating a nerve to which anesthesia may be delivered. The apparatus includes a needle assembly having an electrically conductive needle cannula non-conductive tube secured over the needle cannula, and a conductive plating on the tube. The conductors are connected to a stimulator that generates alternating high and low charge pulses with a constant low current level. The high charge pulses generate noticeable muscle twitches immediately after insertion of the needle into the patient. Muscle twitches responsive to the high charge pulses will peak in magnitude, and muscle twitches responsive to the low charge pulses will become observable as the needle approaches the targeted nerve, and will be indistinguishable from the muscle twitches responsive to the high charge pulses when the needle is in a position for administration of anesthetic.

A limb supporter apparatus supports a patient's elbow on support pegs that extend under the condyles of the humerus bone for positioning the ulna bone for bone testing. The ulna extends over the humerus and is positioned close to the skin for testing. The wrist is supported in the apparatus of the present invention between two vertical support pegs to secure the wrist in a vertical position and to prevent radial movement of the wrist. This apparatus properly positions the ulna above the humerus and allows for consistent, reproducible results during testing performed on a bone. The elbow and wrist supports extend from horizontal members which are supported by vertical support members. The vertical support members are positioned on a horizontal support member which is pivotally connected to a base member. The base member may be secured to a table by attachment bolts.

Apparatus for supporting an arm

A syringe pump comprises a housing and a retainer mounted thereon for receiving a syringe. The syringe to be received is of the type including a barrel for holding liquid medication and a plunger movably positioned in the barrel for expelling the liquid medication therefrom. A driver is movably mounted on the housing for engagement with the plunger and for pushing the plunger into the barrel to thereby force the liquid medication out of the barrel. A control mechanism within the housing regulates the movement of the driver against the plunger. This thereby regulates delivery of the liquid medication from the barrel. Depressible actuation buttons or switches are mounted on the housing for manual access by a user. These switches are associated with the control mechanism to permit the user to select one or more functions under which the control mechanism is to operate. The actuation switches include an electrically conductive material positioned to contact the control mechanism when depressed by the user. This depression causes an electrical energization or de-energization of the control mechanism for the operation of the selected function.

Syringe pump and the like for delivering medication

A medication infusion device comprises a retainer for holding a medication-containing receptacle of the type which is actuatable to expel the contents of medication therefrom. A sensor is included for sensing a characteristic related to the amount of medication within the receptacle. A timing device allows the selection of the period of time over which the contents of the receptacle are to be expelled. A control mechanism, associated with the sensor and the timing device, actuates the receptacle to expel its contents at a controlled rate over the selected period of time.

Medical infusion device

An improved selection panel having a plurality of touch-actuated capacitive switches thereon. Each capacitive switch in the panel includes a transparent glass substrate having transparent conductive coatings on opposite sides thereof to form a capacitor. A display support is positioned behind and adjacent to the plurality of capacitive switches, and provides a separate display card support for each capacitive switch. A removable display card is positioned in each separate support in a manner such that each of the display cards may be changed periodically.
