An array of bistable devices includes a thin cadmium sulfide platelet having a first portion thereof that is substantially pure and the remaining portion thereof is implanted with atoms that can bind excitons. Such remaining portion can be implanted with ions from a lithium source. Apparatus for providing such an array can include a source of lithium ions and masking means for selectively permitting and for selectively inhibiting passage of ions from the source to pass therethrough and to implant in a pattern onto the platelet. The apparatus operates at temperatures in the neighborhood of liquid helium. A method for producing such an array includes providing a thin, substantially pure, platelet of cadmium sulfide, selectively masking the platelet with a pattern to selectively permit and to selectively inhibit passage of ions onto the platelet, and providing a source of ions. The source of ions, in accordance with certain features, can be lithium ions.

Optical digital matrix multiplication apparatus

An optical waveguide made from a unitary organic film has a polydiacetylene core region and a diacetylene monomer cladding substrate region. The index of refraction of the polydiacetylene core region is greater than the index of refraction of the diacetylene monomer cladding substrate region. The method of fabricating the optical waveguide comprises depositing a diacetylene monomer film on a substrate. The diacetylene monomer film is polymerized by ion beam bombardment to a depth less than the thickness of the film. The depth of the polymerization is controlled by the ion mass and energy of the ion beam applied.

Devices for efficiently coupling electromagnetic radiation in the far infrared and sub-millimeter microwave regions of the electromagnetic spectrum to surface electromagnetic waves comprise a material of negative dielectric constant having a grating contoured surface overcoated with a transparent organopolymeric material. The efficiency of coupling between the free radiation and the surface electromagnetic waves can be optimized by adjusting the thickness of the overcoating layer.

Grating surface plasmon coupler

An optical square wave multivibrator includes a semiconductor laser that operates near the polarization transition temperature in a pure TM mode at low injection currents and switches operation to a pure TE mode at high injection currents, and vice versa. Near such temperature, the semiconductor laser experiences large hysteresis loops with high contrast ratio in its polarization-resolved power vs current characteristic while total power exhibits only slight change in hysteresis. The switching behavior of the TE mode is complementary to that of the TM mode. The laser is biased within the hysteresis loops. A current pulse applied in one direction to the laser causes it to provide a TE mode laser output, whereas a current pulse applied in the other direction causes the laser to provide a TM mode laser output. Optical delay line means are coupled to the laser so as to be responsive to an initiation of light in a TE mode for causing a current pulse to be applied to the laser to switch it to the TM mode laser output and to be responsive to cessation of light in the TE mode from the laser for causing a current pluse to be applied in one direction to cause the laser to switch to TE mode, thereby resulting in a polarization-bistable square wave output.

Optical multivibrator

A device for efficiently coupling electromagnetic radiation in the far-infrared and submillimeter microwave regions of the electromagnetic spectrum to surface electromagnetic waves comprising a base metal substrate formed by producing periodic alternating areas thereof in which the dielectric constants differ so as to provide periodic field modulation to, in turn, enhance coupling between the surface plasmons and free photons at the proper coupling angles. The different dielectric constant areas may be formed by selective overplating or evaporating or may alternately be formed by the selective processing of a uniformly deposited material such as by annealing of an amorphous material in strips. In an alternate embodiment of the invention the periodic modulation of the dielectric constant is of the overcoat material rather than the base metal substrate.

A device for efficiently coupling electromagnetic radiation in the far-infrared and submillimeter spectral regions to surface plasmon waves comprises a prism constructed of a dielectric material, a first layer integrally formed on one face of the prism having an index of refraction which is less than the index of refraction of the prism, and a second overcoat layer formed integrally on the first layer and having an index of refraction which is greater than the index of refraction of the first layer.
