Wires are employed for the setting of fractured bones, or for stabilization of bones making up a joint. A portion of the wire protrudes from at least one of the bone segments and, to prevent movement or loss of these wires, and to prevent injury to surrounding tissue, other persons, or clothing, by the exposed ends, caps are provided which are easily secured to the ends and graspable for removal of the wire, when desired. In some cases, the ends of the wire may protrude through the skin and the caps are attached externally.

Surgical wire cap and method of using same

A protective device, such as a boxing helmet, rib or muscle protector, athletic mat, hockey helmet, motorcycle helmet and similar devices, is formed such that the major shock absorption is accomplished by a series of bowed, preferably plastic, members which flex when the device is subjected to an impact, so as to absorb the shock and dissipate its transmission to the user. Because of the nature of these bowed members, when the shock has been dissipated, the member returns to its original position so as to be able to absorb further shocks.

Improved methods for preparation of the tetrasodium and disodium salts of N-(phosphonoacetyl)-L-aspartic acid (PALA) are disclosed. The present methods are well suited for preparation of these products in large amounts. Particular aspects of these methods include: (1) initial preparation of the PALA moiety as the dibenzyl ester; (2) the complete removal of impurities in the form of acetic acid and sodium acetate from disodium PALA by turbulent flow precipitation; and (3) preparation and purification of the cyclohexylammonium salt of dibenzyl PALA which ultimately results in a purer final product.
