Method for making images by image-wise exposing a silver halide emulsion layer, developing it with an alkaline processing solution in the presence of a silver halide solvent, development nuclei, and a density- and tone-controlling compound, transferring silver complexes from the emulsion layer to a non-light-sensitive image-receiving layer and forming an image therein, said density- and tone-controlling compound being contained in said image-receiving layer and/or in said processing solution and corresponding to the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 (same or different) represent hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, or Alk.sub.1 --X--Alk.sub.2 --Y--; Alk.sub.1 is (substituted) C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl; X is --O-- or --S--; Alk.sub.2 is (substituted) C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkylene; Y is a single bond, --O--, --S--, --CONH--, --SO.sub.2 NH--, or --NHCONH--; R.sup.3 can alternatively represent (substituted) C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkylthio; at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 being other than hydrogen and other than C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl. Novel photographic imaging process and materials suitable therefor are provided, which can find their application in multi-color motion picture and simultaneous sound recording, in direct-positive image formation, in image-intensification processes, etc. A photographic silver image is formed in at least one hydrophilic colloid layer of a light-sensitive photographic material incorporating silver halide, by means of exposure and alkaline development steps, followed by bleaching of quantities of silver which are present in areas of said layer extraneous to those where imaging silver is required. A non-diffusible silver bleach inhibitor is initially present in said layer or is released therein during processing of the material but before the bleaching step to prevent bleaching of the required imaging silver in said layer in the bleaching step and the prevention of the bleaching of the silver by the bleach inhibitor in the areas extraneous to those where imaging silver is required is counteracted by the presence in the corresponding areas of such layer of a bleach accelerator which is caused to diffuse into such areas from an adjacent hydrophilic colloid layer during the development processing of the material.

A method for producing photographic images by development of an exposed silver halide element at elevated temperature is provided wherein the development occurs in the presence of a non-quaternary, non-heterocyclic nitrobenzene compound of the formula: ##STR1## WHEREIN: (R).sub.n stands for one or more substituents selected from hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkenyl, substituted alkenyl, alkynyl, substituted alkynyl, alkoxy, substituted alkoxy, alkylmercapto, substituted alkylmercapto, amino, substituted amino, aryl, substituted aryl, hydroxy, nitro, cyano, sulpho or carboxy in acid or salt form, alkoxycarbonyl and an acyl group derived from a carboxylic or sulphonic acid. The nitrobenzene compounds have a favorable effect on the sensitometric properties of the silver halide emulsion that are developed at elevated temperature. They reduce the supplemental fog produced by development at elevated temperature.
