Silane compositions of the general formula are provided herein comprising[(RO)(R)&#x2014;Si-M]-L-[(R)Ar&#x2014;(CR&#x2550;CR)]wherein R and Rare independently a hydrocarbon group of from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms; Rare each independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group of from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms; M optionally is a divalent hydrocarbon connecting group of from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms to link the silicon atom and the L group; L is a covalently bound hydrocarbon linking group of from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms or a heteroatom linking group selected from the group consisting of &#x2014;O&#x2014;, &#x2014;S&#x2014;, &#x2014;NR&#x2014; wherein Ris hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group of from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms; Ris an alkyl group of 1 to 12 carbon atoms; Ar is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic group; q is an integer of 1 to 4; t and c are each independently 0 or 1; and x, y and z are each independently integers of 1 to 3, inclusive, with the proviso that t is 1 when L is a heteroatom group. A rubber composition containing a rubber component, a filler and at least one organofunctional silane and/or mixture of organofunctional silanes in which individual silanes possess both free and blocked mercaptan functionality or particular mixtures of the organofunctional silanes possess both free and blocked mercaptan functionality. The organofunctional silanes and silane mixtures are useful, inter alia, as coupling agents for elastomeric compositions, e.g., rubber formulations employed in the manufacture of tires, where they exhibit a desirable balance of low scorch and good performance properties.

Blocked mercaptosilane coupling agents for filled rubbers

Blocked mercaptosilanes are provided in which the blocking group contains and unsaturated heteroatom or carbon chemically bound directly to sulfur via a single bond. This blocking group optionally may be substituted with one or more carboxylate ester or carboxylic acid functional groups. These silanes are used in manufacture of inorganic filled rubbers, with the silanes deblocked by a deblocking agent. Synthesis of the blocked mercaptosilanes is also provided.

Disclosed herein is a process for the manufacture of a blocked mercaptosilane wherein the process is selected from the group consisting of: (1) reacting a mercaptosilane and a monoacid anhydride corresponding to a thioester group present in the desired product; (2) reacting an alkali salt of a mercaptosilane with the appropriate acid anhydride or acid halide; (3) transesterifying a mercaptosilane and an ester in the presence of an alkali metal of an acid corresponding to the ester; (4) transesterifying a thioester silane and another ester; (5) transesterifying a 1-sila-2-thiacyclopentane or a 1-sila-2-thiacyclohexane and an ester; and (6) reacting an alkali metal salt of a thioacid with a haloalkylsilane.

Silicone oligomers with higher alkoxy groups

This invention describes novel blocked mercaptosilanes wherein the hydrogen atom of the mercaptan functionality has been substituted. The invention includes methods of preparation for the blocked mercaptosilicon compounds as well as their use in filled rubbers. The blocked mercaptosilanes described are unique in that they allow the mixing of fillers with organic polymers to proceed while remaining inert toward coupling to the polymer. The coupling reactions of these blocked mercaptosilicon compounds are triggered by addition of an appropriate deblocking agent.
