An engine structure configured to a control swirl in a diesel engine combustion chamber and a diesel engine assembly including the engine structure defines first and second intake ports and a connecting passage connecting the first and second intake ports. The first intake port is in fluid communication with the combustion chamber and configured to direct a first intake airflow into the combustion chamber, and the second intake port is in fluid communication with the combustion chamber and configured to direct a second intake airflow into the combustion chamber. The connecting passage connects the first intake port to the second intake port and is defined by the engine structure outside of the combustion chamber.

An assembly includes a cylinder head with an integrated exhaust manifold that has four exhaust flow passages directing cylinder exhaust from inlets arranged to correspond with exhaust from the four cylinders, respectively, and has only three outlets. The assembly includes a twin scroll turbocharger having a housing with a first scroll passage, a second scroll passage, and only three inlets. Two of the exhaust flow passages join in the cylinder head to direct exhaust flow into only one of the inlets of the housing and through the first scroll passage. Exhaust flow through the other two of the exhaust flow passages flows separately into the other two inlets in the housing and joins in the housing to flow through the second scroll passage.

An internal combustion engine includes an engine block defining a plurality of cylinders. A cylinder head casting is mounted to the engine block. The cylinder head casting defines intake ports and exhaust ports communicating with the plurality of cylinders. The cylinder head casting defines an air passage in connection with the intake ports and includes elongated extruded cooling elements defining liquid coolant passages integrated into the cylinder head casting within the air passage for cooling intake air passing through the air passage.

Compact packaging for intake charge air cooling

A camshaft assembly includes a base shaft extending along a longitudinal axis. The base shaft is configured to rotate about the longitudinal axis. The camshaft assembly further includes a series of lobe packs mounted on the base shaft. The lobe pack includes a first cam lobe, a second cam lobe, and a third cam lobe. The lobe pack further includes a barrel cam defining a control groove. The camshaft assembly further includes an actuator including an actuator body and at least one pin movably coupled to the actuator body. The lobe pack is configured to move axially relative to the base shaft between a first position, a second position, and a third position. These three lobe pack positions are used to define three discrete valve lift profiles for the intake or exhaust valves in the cylinder. The lift profiles can be different for each engine valve.

Camshaft assembly

An after-treatment component for receiving an exhaust stream from an internal combustion engine comprises a vessel having a first end, a second end, and an intermediate section. The vessel defines an inlet port and an outlet port. The inlet port is in fluid communication with an inlet diffuser disposed within the vessel. The inlet diffuser is in fluid communication with the inlet port and with a diesel oxidation catalyst disposed within the vessel. The diesel oxidation catalyst is in fluid communication with the inlet diffuser and with a transfer duct. The transfer duct is in fluid communication with the diesel oxidation catalyst and with an intermediate diffuser disposed within the vessel. The intermediate diffuser is in fluid communication with the transfer duct and with a catalyzed filter disposed within the vessel. The catalyzed filter is in fluid communication with the intermediate diffuser and with the outlet port.

After-treatment component

A camshaft assembly can control the motion of the intake or exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine and includes a base shaft extending along a longitudinal axis. The camshaft assembly further includes an axially movable structure mounted on the base shaft and axially movable relative to the base shaft. The axially movable structure includes a plurality of lobe packs. Each lobe pack includes a plurality of cam lobes. The axially movable structure includes a barrel cam defining a control groove. The camshaft assembly additionally includes an actuator including an actuator body and a pin movably coupled to the actuator body between a retracted position and an extended position. The axially movable structure can move axially relative to the base shaft when the base shaft rotates about the longitudinal axis and the pin is in the extended position and at least partially disposed in the control groove.

Exemplary embodiments of the present invention are directed towards an apparatus and method for fluidly coupling a turbocharger to an internal combustion engine. In one embodiment, a turbocharger mount for fluidly coupling a turbocharger to an exhaust system of an engine is provided. The turbocharger mount includes a housing portion and a mounting flange extending from the housing portion. The housing portion defines a cavity therein and a first inlet opening in fluid communication with the cavity, a first outlet opening in fluid communication with the cavity, and a second outlet opening in fluid communication with the cavity.

A method of forming a cylinder head may include machining an upper surface of a cam tower of the cylinder head to form a generally planar surface. An oil passage may be drilled in the upper surface to provide an oil feed. A bearing bore may be formed in the upper surface of the cam tower. The bearing bore may include a recess having first and second circumferential ends. The oil passage may intersect the first circumferential end.

A positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system is provided for an internal combustion engine. The PCV system includes a centrifugal separator disposed within a shaft member, for example a balance shaft, of the internal combustion engine. The centrifugal separator is operable to impart rotational motion on the gases flowing through the shaft member such that the centrifugal forces urge the separation of oil particle entrained within the gases.

Positive crankcase ventilation system for an internal combustion engine

A method of forming a cylinder head includes casting the cylinder head to include an integral cast-in exhaust manifold. The integral cast-in exhaust manifold defines an intermediate exhaust gas passage in fluid communication with exhaust ports and an exhaust gas outlet passage in fluid communication with the intermediate exhaust gas passage. The cast cylinder head includes a coolant cavity to receive a cooling fluid. The coolant cavity includes first and second portions extending around an outer circumference of the exhaust gas outlet passage separated from one another by a first cast-in wall. The method further includes machining the first cast-in wall to provide fluid communication between the first and second portions of the coolant cavity. Machining the first cast-in wall forms a first coolant passage created by the first and second portions of the coolant cavity and the machined passage around the outer circumference of the exhaust gas outlet passage.

Engine cylinder head cooling features and method of forming

An assembly for connecting a component having a base to a surface includes a fastener and a retainer having a clamp portion for capturing a shank of the fastener, and for aligning the fastener and an optional gasket with the base. The retainer automatically separates from the fastener when the fastener is tightened, and may include a recovery feature to allow recovery of the retainer after separation. A method for facilitating connection of a component and gasket to a surface includes inserting a threaded fastener into a base of the component, capturing the fastener within a clamp portion of a retainer, and positioning a surface of the retainer adjacent to the base. A tab portion of a gasket or the base can be inserted into a slot in the retainer to thereby secure the retainer to the base prior to connecting the component to the surface.

Assembly and method for retaining a fastener

An exhaust gas recirculation system for an engine provides three modes of operation. In a bypass mode, exhaust gas bypasses a heat exchanger. In a single pass mode of operation, exhaust gas flows through the heat exchanger passageways. In a dual pass mode of operation, exhaust gas flows through the heat exchanger passageways in a manner that provides a longer effective flow length through the heat exchanger compared to the single pass mode, thereby to increase cooling efficacy.

An engine assembly may include an engine block, first and second cylinder heads, and first and second valvetrain covers fixed to the first and second cylinder heads. The engine block may include first and second cylinder banks disposed at an angle relative to one another to form a V-configuration. The first cylinder head may be fixed to the first bank and may include a first set of intake and exhaust ports. The second cylinder head may be fixed to the second bank and may include a second set of intake and exhaust ports. The first and second sets of exhaust ports may be located proximate a center of the V-configuration. The first valvetrain cover may include a first air inlet in communication with the first set of intake ports. The second valvetrain cover may include a second air inlet in communication with the second set of intake ports.

An intake assembly is provided for a sequentially fired eight cylinder V-type internal combustion engine including a cylinder block having a first band of cylinders and a second bank of cylinders. The assembly includes first, second, third, and fourth intake plenums mounted with respect to the engine. The first bank of cylinders includes a first group of two cylinders that fire ninety crank angle degrees apart from each other and the second bank of cylinders includes a second group of two cylinders that fire ninety crank angle degrees apart from each other. The first and second intake plenums are operable to communicate intake air to a respective one cylinder of the first group of two cylinders. The third and fourth intake plenums are operable to communicate intake air to a respective one cylinder of the second group of two cylinders.
