A water filter system for a COsampling line positioned between a patient and a patient monitor to receive patient exhalation. The filter system includes at least one hydrophobic filter that adsorbs and prevents water from reaching the patient monitor. Alternatively, the filter system may include both a hydrophobic filter and a hydrophilic filter and optionally a desiccant.

A plunger-less syringe and method of use are disclosed. The syringe includes an outer housing fixedly attached to an interior receptacle for receiving a quantity of blood. The syringe has a vent that allows air to escape from the receptacle as blood flows therein. The vent can include a filter for use in preventing blood from exiting the interior receptacle. A vent cap is provided having a recess for mating with a syringe having a plunger, wherein blood flow into the receptacle can be controlled. A plurality of the plunger-less syringes can be packaged in a container, wherein the blood pathway of the syringes is sterilized and without having any exterior sterile packaging.

A splash shield for use in wound irrigation is provided. The splash shield includes at least one outlet area located along its rim so that irrigating fluid may flow from the splash shield. The splash shield is preferably oval-shaped with a substantially flat top adjacent to which is a receiver unit. The outlet area can be formed, for example, by contoured portions or by a generally V-shaped opening, each able to define a channel to enable the escape of fluid from the splash shield. The splash shield may be used in tandem with a syringe having a tip that is positioned in the receiver unit. Additionally, a basin can be provided for use during wound irrigation. The basin includes indentations to accommodate placement of a portion of the human body within the basin and an exit portion such that fluid in the basin can move in the basin to the edge of a table, bed, gurney or the like.

A system for dispensing medication includes: a medicine canister that contains medicine to be dispensed, an actuator that houses the medicine canister and an adapter assembly that allows for obtaining information. The adapter assembly includes a connector assembly and an electronics module. The connector assembly connects to the medicine canister. The electronics module obtains information related to patient usage of medicine from the medicine canister. In another embodiment, a method for using the same electronics module with first and second medicine dispensing apparatuses, including a first medicine canister and a second medicine canister, is provided. The first medicine canister contains first medicine and the second medicine canister contains second medicine. First information, related to dispensing the first medicine, is stored with the electronics module joined to the first medicine dispensing apparatus. The electronics module is removed from the first medicine dispensing apparatus and joined to the second medicine dispensing apparatus. Second information, related to dispensing the second medicine, is also stored with the electronics module.

Electronic monitoring medication apparatus and method

A system for collecting patient respiratory information includes a base unit and a removable mouthpiece unit. The mouthpiece unit includes sensors that sense parameters of a patient's breath when the patient blows into the mouthpiece unit. The base unit receives and processes the information from the mouthpiece unit and stores it in chronological fashion for later analysis by a physician. The mouthpiece unit includes a memory for storing identification information for a patient who has been assigned the mouthpiece unit. When the mouthpiece unit is inserted into the base unit, the base unit reads the identification information from the mouthpiece unit and stores all measurement information in association therewith. In this manner, a single base unit can be used to collect information for a plurality of different patients without creating confusion as to which measurement results correspond to which patients. A cable assembly can be disposed intermediate the mouthpiece unit and the base unit to allow the patient to view a display on the base unit while simultaneously exhaling into the mouthpiece unit.

Method and apparatus for obtaining patient respiratory data

A respiratory system drug applicator for a patient is disclosed which may include a number of features to enhance the administration of the aerosolized drug to the patient. For instance, an adjustable flow regulator may be utilized which regulates the air flow during inhalation by the patient (during which the aerosolized drug is also administered to the patient's respiratory system), and thus affects the patient's breathing pattern. Moreover, a distensible drug reservoir which changes shape during inhalation and exhalation by the patient may be utilized. This may be used to provide biofeedback to the patient regarding the patient's breathing pattern.
