Apparatus and methods for controllable networks to vary inter-stage power transfer in a multi-stage power conversion system are disclosed herein. By using controllable networks (-) within the first power converter stage (), intermediate power delivered to a subsequent or second power converter stage () can be varied so that the multi-stage power conversion system () may respond to a full load step while offering improved light load power conversion efficiency. A power estimation circuit () within the second power converter stage () can provide a control signal (C-CN) to each of the controllable networks (-); the controllable networks (-), in turn, can provide network signals (SI, S) to control the intermediate power delivered to the second power converter stage ().

Apparatus and methods for controllable networks to vary inter-stage power transfer in a multi-stage power conversion system

Apparatus and methods for sensing resonant circuit signals to enhance control in a resonant converter are described herein. A buffer circuit coupled in parallel with or across a resonant component (e.g., a transformer) input port avails a buffered primary port signal for use in resonant conversion. The buffered primary port signal is a comprehensive signal including information relating to both input voltage and input power; and it may be used to advantageously enhance switching and power conversion in an inductor-inductor capacitor (LLC) converter. Additionally, the LLC converter uses a sense interface circuit to provide a scaled replica of the buffered primary port signal. In one example the scaled replica can advantageously be used with a secondary side controller to control output power based on the comprehensive information contained within the buffered primary port signal.

Apparatus and methods for sensing resonant circuit signals to enhance control in a resonant converter

A controller for use in a power converter that is configured to operate in a plurality of modes including a first mode and a second mode includes a frequency monitor module coupled to measure a signal characteristic of a switch drive signal coupled to control switching of a switches block of the power converter. The frequency monitor module includes a memory coupled to store a measured signal characteristic of the switch drive signal measured during the first mode. The frequency monitor module is coupled to generate a clock signal in response to the measured signal characteristic stored in the memory. The switch drive signal is coupled to be generated in response to the clock signal during the second mode.

Apparatus and methods for controlling a switch drive signal following mode transitions in a switching power converter

A controller includes first and second half bridge sense circuits coupled to a half bridge node. The half bridge node is coupled between a high side switch and a low side switch coupled to an input. A rising slew detection circuit is coupled to the first half bridge sense circuit to output a first slew detection signal in response to a rising slew event at the half bridge node. A falling slew detection circuit is coupled to the second half bridge sense circuit to output a second slew detection signal in response to a falling slew event at the half bridge node. A control circuit coupled to output a high side drive signal to the high side switch and a low side drive signal to the low side switch in response to the first slew detection signal, the second slew detection signal, and a feedback signal.

Deadtime adjustment for a power converter

A power converter controller includes a control loop clock generator to generate a switching frequency signal responsive to a burst load threshold, a power signal, and a load signal. A switching frequency of the switching frequency signal is above a resonance range of an energy transfer element. A burst control circuit generates a burst on signal and a burst off signal in response to a feedback signal and a burst enable signal to operate the controller in a plurality of burst modes. A burst frequency of the burst on signal or the burst off signal is less than the resonance range of the energy transfer element. A request transmitter circuit generates a request signal responsive to the switching frequency signal, the burst on signal, and the burst off signal to control switching of a switching circuit.

Multi zone secondary burst modulation for resonant converters

A power converter controller includes a control loop clock generator to generate a switching frequency signal responsive to a burst load threshold, a power signal, and a load signal. A switching frequency of the switching frequency signal is above a mechanical audio resonance range of an energy transfer element and above an audible noise frequency. A burst control circuit generates a burst on signal and a burst off signal in response to a feedback signal and a burst enable signal to operate the controller in a plurality of burst modes. A burst frequency of the burst on signal or the burst off signal is less than the mechanical audio resonance range. A request transmitter circuit generates a request signal responsive to the switching frequency signal, the burst on signal, and the burst off signal to control switching of a switching circuit.

A controller configured for use in a power converter includes a multiplexer that receives a startup clock signal and a request clock signal. The multiplexer selects the startup signal or the request clock signal to generate a clock signal. A startup clock generates the startup clock signal to control a switching frequency of a primary switching circuit during a startup condition. A request clock generates the request clock signal in response to a request signal to control the switching frequency of the primary switching circuit after the startup condition. A control circuit receives the clock signal to generate a drive signal control the switching frequency of the primary switching circuit. The control circuit selects the startup clock signal during the startup condition. The control circuit receives an indication in the request signal of an end of an undervoltage condition and then selects the request clock signal after the startup condition.

Synchronizing multiple controllers in a power converter

An electronic circuit for sensing a temperature rise in a power transistor device, the temperature rise caused by a current flow in the power transistor device. The power transistor device and a sense-FET are disposed on a substrate. The sense-FET senses a fractional portion of the current flow and outputs a current signal. A JFET has its drain connected to the drain of the power transistor device. The gate of the JFET is connected to the source of the power transistor device, such that when the power transistor device is on, the JFET is also turned on, and a drain voltage signal of the power transistor device is output at a second node of the JFET. A detection circuit receives the drain voltage signal and the current signal and outputs an alarm signal when the drain-source resistance of the power transistor device exceeds a combined threshold limit.

Electronic circuit for fast temperature sensing of a power switching device

A power converter controller includes a control loop clock generator that generates a switching frequency signal in response to a sense signal representative of a characteristic of the power converter, a load signal responsive to an output load, and a limit signal representative of a maximum length of a current half cycle of the switching frequency signal. A comparator generates an enable signal in response to the load signal and a load threshold. A limit control generates the limit signal in response to the enable signal and the switching frequency signal. A rate of change of half cycles of the switching frequency signal is controlled in response to the limit signal. A request transmitter generates a request signal in response to the switching frequency signal to control switching of a switching circuit coupled to the energy transfer element and an input of the power converter.

Controller with limit control to change switching period or switching frequency of power converter and methods thereof

A controller for use in a power converter includes a control loop clock generator that is coupled to generate a switching frequency signal in response to a sense signal representative of a characteristic of the power converter, a load signal responsive to an output load of the power converter, and a hard switch sense output. A hard switch sense circuit is coupled to generate the hard switch sense output in response to the switching frequency signal and a rectifier conduction signal that is representative of a polarity of an energy transfer element of the power converter. A request transmitter circuit is coupled to generate a request signal in response to the switching frequency signal to control switching of a switching circuit coupled to an input of the energy transfer element of the power converter.

Secondary winding sense for hard switch detection

A resonant converter includes a resonant transformer having a leakage inductance and a magnetizing inductance coupled in series to form a resonant transformer input port. The resonant transformer has an output that is coupled to provide an output power to a load. A primary bridge circuit is coupled to provide an input power to the resonant transformer input port. A buffer circuit is coupled in parallel with the resonant transformer input port. A control module is coupled to receive a buffered primary port signal from the buffer circuit to control the primary bridge circuit to control the output power to the load in response to the buffered primary port signal.

A controller for use in a power converter includes a power switch including a drain, a source, a control input, and a tap. The power switch includes a first transistor coupled to a second transistor, a drain of the first transistor is coupled to the drain of the power switch and the source of the first transistor is coupled to the tap. A tap sense circuit is coupled to the tap. A drive circuit is coupled to receive an indicator signal from the tap sense circuit. The indicator signal is indicative of a voltage at the tap or the current through the first transistor. The drive circuit is coupled to receive a feedback signal representative of an output quantity of the power converter. The drive circuit is coupled to generate a drive signal to control switching of the power switch in response to the indicator signal and the feedback signal.

Threshold detection with tap

An integrated circuit (IC) for sensing a current flowing through a transistor device includes a substrate and a current scaling circuit that includes first and second MOSFET devices. The first MOSFET device has a drain coupled to the switched FET at a first node and a source coupled to the substrate. The second MOSFET device has a source coupled to the substrate and a drain coupled to a second node. The first MOSFET device has a channel size that is K times larger than the second MOSFET device. Circuitry is included that equalizes a voltage across both the first MOSFET device and the second MOSFET device.
