An uncoated recording medium includes a blend of hardwood fibers and softwood fibers. The total fiber content is at least 80 wt % of a total wt % of the uncoated recording medium. A filler is present in the uncoated recording medium in an amount ranging from about 3 wt % to about 10.2 wt % of the total wt % of the uncoated recording medium. The uncoated recording medium has i) a weight ranging from about 50 g/mto about 70 g/m, and ii) a machine direction Lorentezen & Wetter 5 degree bending stiffness ranging from about 0.19 mNm to about 0.27 mNm and a cross direction Lorentezen & Wetter 5 degree bending stiffness ranging from about 0.09 mNm to about 0.12 mNm, and iii) an ISO brightness of at least 86.

Embodiments of the present invention disclose a method and system for environmental watermarking. According to one embodiment, a print request is received at a printing device coupled to a processing unit, which evaluates whether an environmental print criteria has been satisfied. The document along with an environmental watermark image is printed on the print media upon determination that at least one environmental print criterion has been satisfied.

The invention is directed towards high performance switchable polarizers for optical projection displays. One embodiment of the invention is a switchable polarizer with (1) two conductive electrodes and (2) a liquid crystal material that is positioned between the two conductive electrodes. The electrodes apply a uniform electric field across the liquid crystal material when one of the electrodes is placed at a first potential and other electrode is placed at a second potential different from the first potential. These two electrodes also heat the liquid crystal material when they conduct current. When equal currents are drawn through the electrodes, the electrodes apply a uniform electric field across the liquid crystal during a heating operation.

A single sheet publication binding process utilizes media having an adhesive pre-applied to the media before the media is printed or bound within a publication. A publication page, or cover, has an adhesive pre-applied, is printed, and is then aligned in a publication binder. The publication binder aligns the cover and pages of a publication one page at a time and applies a pressure to each page for a period of time that will activate a pressure sensitive co-adhesive on the page with the co-adhesive on another page, or with the co-adhesive on the cover.

In one aspect, the invention encompasses a method of using an image forming device. A first pattern of toner is provided on a photosensitive drum of the image forming device. The toner is transferred from the photosensitive drum to an intermediate transfer belt to form a second pattern. After forming the second pattern, a bias of the photosensitive drum is reversed relative to the intermediate transfer belt and toner is transferred back to the photosensitive drum from the intermediate transfer belt to form a third pattern of toner on the photosensitive drum. In another aspect, the invention encompasses a method of detecting inaccuracies in toner placement on an intermediate transfer belt of an image forming device. A first pattern of black, magenta, cyan and yellow toners is provided on a photosensitive drum of the image forming device. The toners are transferred from the photosensitive drum to an intermediate transfer belt of the image forming device to form a second pattern. Subsequently, and without transferring the toner from the intermediate transfer belt to a substrate processed by the image forming device, measuring at least one property of the second pattern to determine if the second pattern is an accurate reproduction of the first pattern.

Methods of detecting and correcting color plane mis-registration on an intermediate transfer belt

A system and method of providing a periodic trajectory scan path for a laser beam across a photoconductive surface in a laser printer. A preferred embodiment of the periodic trajectory for a system with a two-axis deflector includes a multiple-frequency omega wave trajectory for providing a substantially rectangular grid of available dot locations for selective laser beam pulsing. As such, a plurality of generally linear rows of dots are completed in a single scan pass of the laser beam across the surface. The periodic trajectory is provided by deflecting the laser beam with an optical beam deflector, such as an electro-optic deflector, placed between the laser and the rotating polygon scanning mirror. A preferred embodiment of the beam deflector includes a folded optical path.

A printer responds to a media gloss measurement for improved color printing. The printer includes a gloss meter, a controller, and a print engine. The gloss meter includes a solid body having a source tube and a reflection tube each being integral within the body. An LED in the source tube illuminates a reference surface at an angle of incidence. A photo sensor in the reflection tube responds to a first reference spectral reflection from the surface at an angle of reflection equal to the angle of incidence. When a sheet of media is registered by the printer against the reference surface, the photo sensor responds to a second spectral reflection from the media. The ratio of second to first spectral reflection intensities is compared to a selected threshold to identify the media by gloss level. When motion of the media is resumed, the media wipes the reference surface to maintain the accuracy of gloss measurements. The angle of incidence is less than thirty degrees for discriminating among media having low gloss characteristics.

Printer and method with media gloss and color determination

A system and method of deflecting a laser beam in a laser printer for providing enhanced resolution and reduced banding effects. Specifically, to enhance resolution, the laser beam is borrowed (deflected) from a white space area adjacent an image to double resolution at the edges of the image. Similarly, banding is reduced by deflecting the beam to compensate for drum rotational and translational errors. The beam is deflected using an electro-optic modulator placed between the laser diode and the scanning mirror. Encoders detect drum rotational errors and motion between the optics unit and the drum to provide a closed loop feedback system for reducing banding.
