Computing systems with off-load processing for networking related tasks are disclosed. A first mobile electronic device includes first wireless communication circuitry to support cellular communication; and second wireless communication circuitry to support wireless communication. The first electronic device includes processor circuitry to: identify a first one of a first cellular network or a second cellular network based on availability of the first and second cellular networks; initiate establishment of a first communication link between a second mobile electronic device and the first one of the first cellular network or the second cellular network via the first wireless communication circuitry and the second wireless communication circuitry; and initiate establishment of a second communication link between the second mobile electronic device and a second one of the first cellular network or the second cellular network based on a change in the availability of the first and second cellular networks.

Computing systems with off-load processing for networking related tasks are disclosed. A first electronic device includes first wireless interface circuitry to support cellular communication; and second wireless interface circuitry to support wireless communication. The first electronic device includes processor circuitry to: enable a wireless connection with a second electronic device via the second wireless interface circuitry of the first electronic device; cause connection of the second electronic device with a first one of a first cellular network or a second cellular network via the first wireless interface circuitry of the first electronic device and the second wireless interface circuitry of the first electronic device; and cause a switch to a second one of the first cellular network or the second cellular network based on a change in availability of the first and second cellular networks.

Example computing systems with off-load processing for networking related tasks are disclosed. Example consumer electronic devices disclosed herein include first wireless interface circuitry to support cellular communication and second wireless interface circuitry to support wireless local area network communication. Disclosed example consumer electronic devices also include processor circuitry to monitor a communication environment, select one of the first wireless interface circuitry or the second wireless interface circuitry to provide a user device in communication with the consumer electronic device with access to a network, and connect the user device with the network via the selected one of the first wireless interface circuitry or the second wireless interface circuitry. Disclosed example consumer electronic devices further include a housing dimensioned to be positioned in a consumer residence.

A method is described that comprises executing a service selection method on an off load processor of a computing system to select an available network service for handling traffic sent to/from a handheld device. The execution of the service selection method is performed while a main CPU of said computing system is in a low power state.

An embodiment of the invention allows a network access server to control network access for individual applications that run on a device. The device may be included in a machine-to-machine environment. The embodiment may provide a secure channel between the network access server and the device access layer and another secure channel between the device access layer and the device application layer. Thus, before applications are allowed to access the network those applications may be required to authenticate themselves via a secure channel. Other embodiments are described herein.

In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, a computer system may determine focus areas and non-focus areas of the display screen. The brightness of non-focus areas may then be reduced with respect to focus areas, thereby reducing power consumption of the display screen and, hence, reducing power consumption of the computer system. For example, a focus area may be an active window of the display screen and a non-focus area may be an inactive window of the display screen. As another example, a focus area may be a region of the display screen within a vicinity of a cursor (i.e. data entry point), and a non-focus area may be the region outside this vicinity. The size of the vicinity may be measured in radius or in lines of data (e.g. in a word processing or spreadsheet program) surrounding the cursor. The size and shape of the vicinity may be determined by a user.

Method and apparatus to reduce power consumption of a computer system display screen

An element for an in home power line network is housed within the power supply of laptop computer. The element communicates with the power line and carries out network operations over that line. The device also includes logic therein which automatically detects the format of the network being communicated with so that a number of different network types can be automatically connected.
