A hand-held aerosolized inhaler that delivers an aerosolized solution to the user on demand when he or she inhales is provided. A pressure or flow sensor within the invention detects the change in air flow as the user inhales and triggers spraying the aerosol solution only when the inhaled breath stream will optimally entrain the sprayed aerosol. The pressure or flow sensor sends an electronic signal to turn on or off liquid and air pumps as the user breathes. Liquid, or liquid and air are pumped to the nozzle inside the invention to create an aerosolized mixture.

On demand aerosolized delivery inhaler

Self Contained Aerosol Dual Delivery System (SCADDS) is a pocket-sized inhaler for delivering inhaled therapeutic or recreational aerosols simultaneously and separately via oral and nasal routes. A handle assembly has a removable mouthpiece, cartridge penetration needles, puncture needle protective cover, a shuttle, a cam, valves and conduits from the penetration needles to the individual nozzles for oral and nasal inhalation. A cartridge contains separate reservoirs of solutions for oral and nasal inhalation. The reservoirs, impermeable bags with fluid and dissolved gas in solution, are punctured when the cartridge is attached to the handle assembly. Inhalation slides the shuttle toward the mouthpiece and opens the valves to release solution. The oral aerosol is inhaled into the lungs while the nasal aerosol provides a pleasant aroma. To enhance oral inhalation solution properties the oral inhalation reservoir may contain finely divided solids in a semi-permeable membranous bag, attached to a second reservoir, or be divided by a filter such that these solids do not occlude nozzles or penetration needles Degassed water may be used to enhance organic compound solubility in solutions. Alternative reservoir bag systems are twin spring driven or gas driven cylinders to provide proper pressure to aerosolize nasal and oral fluids. Hydraulic intensification, piezoelectric pumping devices, and electromechanically driven pressure pumps are alternative pressurization systems.

Self contained aerosol dual delivery system (SCADDS)

A system and method reduce starting torque for initial rotational displacement and assure smoothness of motion for continuing displacement of a rotary joint. A rotary joint (either cylindrical or spherical) has a first annular joint member and a second annular joint member separated by a fluid-filled annulus. The second annular joint member is adapted for rotary motion with respect to the first annular joint member. A module fluidly communicating with the fluid-filled annulus creates vibratory micro motions in the fluid of the fluid-filled annulus which is between a pair of seals extending between the first annular joint member and the second annular joint member. The vibratory micro motions induce micro motions in the seals of the rotary joint. The micro motions in the seals reduce the initial torque for the initial displacement and assure smoothness of continuing displacement of either or both of the joint members.

Active torque reduction for hydraulically filled joints

A system shields IR emissions from remote sensors and has a flexible outer metallic layer extending to cover objects emitting IR energy on the covered ground. The outer layer is conductive of heat energy and faces upward. A flexible inner metallic layer coextensively extends adjacent to the outer metallic layer. The inner layer is conductive of heat energy and faces downward. Spaced-apart thermo electric chips are between and in contact with the outer and inner layers. The chips transfer heat energy between the outer and inner layers. A sensor of IR radiation on ambient ground provides signals representative of the thermal signature of the ambient ground. A controller couples signals to the chips in response to the representative ambient ground thermal signals for controlling the heat energy radiated from the outer layer to match the radiated IR signature from the outer layer to the IR signature of the ambient ground.

Hydraulic intensification, piezoelectric pumping devices, and electromechanically driven pressure pumps are alternative pressurization systems.

A thermal liner in a diving suit has a layer of incompressible phase change materials for storing latent heat energy and for later releasing the std energy while changing phase. This thermal liner provides thermal protection for divers' wetsuits, drysuits, and hot-water suits using stored energy from phase change materials, for extreme cold water diving. The thermal liner can function as an emergency backup heat source upon power failure when electrically-heated drysuits are used, or as an emergency backup heat source in case of interruption of warm water supply when hot-water diving suits are used. It can also be used as a supplemental source of heat for divers wearing passively-insulated wetsuits or drysuits to prolong acceptable durations in cold water missions. The thermal liner gives divers an emergency 'come home' capability in case of power failure within drysuits supplied with an electrically-heated undergarment, or of an interruption of the warm water supply to a hot-water suit. A warm protective barrier is provided between the diver's skin and the hot-water suit that protects the diver from thermal shorts due to water current or compression of the suit by surface contacts. Alternately, the thermal liner may cool a diver during dressing on the surface by absorbing the diver's body heat as the phase change materials melt prior to the dive.

Passive thermal capacitor for cold water diving garments

An electrical power supply arrangement incorporates a turbine-generator ambly providing a self-contained non-battery electrical power source for supplying power to a breathing apparatus. The turbine-generator assembly is interposed in an air hose extending between first and second stage pressure regulators respectively connected to a pressurized air cylinder and to a cooling device of the breathing apparatus. The assembly includes an air turbine and an electrical generator disposed and coupled in tandem relationship to one another and enclosed in an elongated hollow housing. Pressurized air introduced into the turbine end of the housing expands across turbine blades and rotatably drives a central shaft of the turbine which, in turn, rotates a central rotor of the generator causing generation of electrical power in a stationary stator of the generator which surrounds the rotor. The electrical power can be accessed at a terminal block attached to the generator end of the housing for supplying power to operate the cooling device of the breathing apparatus.

An insulation jacket is provided for a breathing gas device. A first jacket ortion wraps completely about the device's cylinder and gas delivery valve. A second jacket portion wraps about a high-pressure regulator coupled in-line with the gas delivery valve and a plurality of gas delivery conduits extending from the high-pressure regulator. The first and second jacket portions are formed from a flexible insulating material of laminate construction. A plurality of fastening strips, e.g., hook-and-loop fastening strips, cooperate with first and second jacket portions after they are wrapped about the respective portions of the breathing gas device.

A device is provided for modifying the temperature of a breathing or other as supplied through a conduit. A heat exchanger is mounted in-line with the conduit. A thermoelectric device has first and second thermally conductive plates separated by at least one thermoelectric couple. The first thermally conductive plate is in thermal contact with the heat exchanger. A phase change material is in thermal contact with the second thermally conductive plate. A voltage is applied to the thermoelectric couple(s) to maintain the first and second thermally conductive plates at different temperatures. The phase change material changes from a first phase to a second phase at a phase change temperature that is selected to be between the different temperatures of the first and second thermally conductive plates.

Breathing gas temperature modification device

A back-reinforced two-piece upper torso assembly for an articulated diving uit. The upper torso assembly includes a lower hollow rigid body of rounded shape for housing a diver's upper trunk, an upper hollow rigid body of rounded shape for housing a diver's head and being seated upon the lower hollow rigid body, and a clamping and sealing mechanism releasably coupling the upper hollow rigid body to the lower hollow rigid body about adjacent seated portions thereof so as to form a watertight joint therebetween wherein the upper hollow rigid body can rotate relative to the lower hollow rigid body. The upper torso assembly also includes a reinforcement structure connecting the upper hollow rigid body to the lower hollow rigid body along adjacent rear portions thereof so as to permit a lifting load applied to the assembly during water entry and exit to transfer to the lower hollow rigid body in such manner as to avoid stressing the watertight joint therebetween.

A breathing gas cooling and heating device. Warm breathing gas enters the it which consists of a heat exchanger mounted in an insulated shell and runs through the heat exchanger tubes. These tubes are in intimate thermal contact with micro-encapsulated phase change materials. The micro-encapsulated phase change material changes phase from solid to liquid, thereby absorbing heat at the temperature of the phase change material, and thereby cooling the gas flowing through the heat exchanger. In situations where heating of the breathing gas is desired, the gas stream absorbs heat from the phase change material. The unit is rechargeable for chilling applications after usage by placing the device in an ambient environment less than the temperature of the phase change of the material or by replacing the phase change material. It is rechargeable for heating applications by warming the device to a temperature above that of the phase change material. The unit circumvents the need for ice, the most commonly available chilling medium, in situations where ice or other cooling is not available. Additionally, the unit can be used by filling it with an ice water slurry for fire fighting applications where ice is readily available. The gas then exits the device in a chilled state. The device is designed to work in conjunction with numerous existing breathing apparatus by virtue of the in-line installation capability to existing systems.
