A heavy crude oil is fractionated into at least three liquid fractions which include a distillate fraction boiling in the 400.degree. F.-650.degree. F. range and a 650.degree. F.+ boiling range residuum. The distillate cut is hydrodesulfurized and the residuum is hydrodemetallized. The cuts thus hydrotreated, and at least a part of the third liquid fraction, are then combined to form an upgraded synthetic crude oil of relatively low sulfur content and relatively low vanadium and nickel content.

A treated decomposable compound of molybdenum, which has been prepared by the catalytic dehydrogenation of a decomposable compound of molybdenum wherein the molybdenum has a valence state greater than zero or by the treating of the decomposable compound of molybdenum with a reducing agent, is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The hydrocarbon-containing feed stream containing such treated decomposable compound of molybdenum is then contacted with a catalyst composition comprising a support selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica and silica alumina and a promoter comprising at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Group VIB, Group VIIB, and Group VIII of the Periodic Table to reduce the concentration of metals, sulfur, nitrogen, Ramsbottom carbon residue and/or heavies contained in the hydrocarbon-containing feed stream.

In a hydrofining process, the life of a catalyst composition comprising a support selected from the group comprising alumina, silica and silica-alumina and a promoter comprising at least one metal selected from Group VIB, Group VIIB, and Group VIII of the periodic table is improved by mixing a decomposable compound of molybdenum with the hydrocarbon-containing feed stream prior to contacting the hydrocarbon-containing feed stream with the catalyst composition. The molybdenum in the decomposable compound is in valence state of zero. A treated decomposable compound of molybdenum, which has been prepared by the catalytic hydrogenation of a decomposable compound of molybdenum, wherein the molybdenum has a valence state greater than zero, or by the treating of the decomposable compound of molybdenum with a reducing agent, is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. At least one decomposable compound selected from the group consisting of dimanganese decacarbonyl and chromium hexacarbonyl is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The hydrocarbon containing feed stream containing such decomposable compound is then contacted in a hydrofining process with a catalyst composition comprising a support selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica and silica-alumina and a promoter comprising at least one metal selected from Group VIB, Group VIIB and Group VIII of the Periodic Table. The introduction of the decomposable compound may be commenced when the catalyst is new, partially deactivated or spent with a beneficial result occurring in each case.

At least one decomposable compound of a metal selected from the group consisting of copper, zinc and the metals of Group III-B, Group IV-B, Group VB, Group VIB, Group VIIB and Group VIII of the Periodic Table is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The hydrocarbon-containing feed stream containing such decomposable compound is then contacted with a suitable refractory inorganic material to reduce the concentration of metals, sulfur and Ramsbottom carbon residue contained in the hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The suitable refractory inorganic material may also be slurried with the hydrocarbon-containing feed stream.

At least one decomposable molybdenum dithiophosphate compound is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The hydrocarbon-containing feed stream containing such decomposable molybdenum dithiophosphate compound is then contacted in a hydrofining process with a catalyst composition comprising a support selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica and silica-alumina and a promoter comprising at least one metal selected from Group VIB, Group VIIB and Group VIII of the Periodic Table. The introduction of the decomposable molybdenum dithiophosphate compound may be commenced when the catalyst is new, partially deactivated or spent with a beneficial result occuring in each case.

At least one decomposable compound selected from the group consisting of compounds of the metals of Group IVB of the Periodic Table is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The hydrocarbon-containing feed stream containing such decomposable compound is then contacted in a hydrofining process with a catalyst composition comprising a support selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica and silica-alumina and a promoter comprising at least one metal selected from Group VIB, Group VIIB and Group VIII of the Periodic Table. The introduction of the decomposable compound may be commenced when the catalyst is new, partially deactivated or spent with a beneficial result occuring in each case.

Hydrocarbon feedstocks are dehydrogenated to compounds having the same number of carbon atoms and a higher degree of unsaturation by contacting the feedstock in the vapor phase in the presence of molecular oxygen with a catalyst consisting essentially of nickel, lead, phosphorus and combined oxygen, and optionally, an alkali metal. Representative of such conversions is the oxidative dehydrogenation of butane to butenes and butadiene.
