A circuit having means responsive to a plurality of electric signals representative, respectively, of the speeds of a plurality of traction motors in a propulsion system for a traction vehicle, wherein the circuit provides a digital output signal having a frequency representative of the average speed of the respective motors.

A combination of integrating and logic means in an electrical circuit responds to inputs from a variable analog control signal and from a constant frequency train of digital pulses. The magnitude of the control signal is variable between predetermined low and high extremes. The logic means periodically generates discrete output signals in synchronism with the digital pulses. When the control signal is lower than a predetermined intermediate magnitude, the integrating means is saturated and the logic means is able to produce the output signals at a constant frequency. When the control signal is between its intermediate and high extreme magnitude, the integrator is active and governs the operation of the logic means in such a manner that the average frequency of the output signals varies between its constant magnitude and zero as an inverse linear function of the control signal magnitude.

Apparatus for electronically simulating the response of a direct current traction motor to predetermined operating states whereby there is provided a resultant signal representative of the torque that would be produced by an actual motor operating in the prescribed states. The apparatus calculates E per RPM for the simulated motor from measured values of available armature voltage and armature velocity. A function generator thereafter converts the E per RPM signal to a signal representative of the motor field current based upon known values for the simulated motor. The field current signal is converted to an armature current signal by a circuit which responds to the motor commanded state of field weakening to compute the instantaneous ratio of armature current to field current under the commanded conditions and thereafter multiplies the field current signal by that ratio to obtain a signal representative of armature current. Multiplication of the armature current signal by the E per RPM signal then yields a signal representative of the torque which would be developed by the simulated motor.
