The invention contemplates, as an article of manufacture, an article-retaining adapter unit which, without requiring tooling of any kind is securely and removably attachable to an installed rack bar on an automobile roof. The adapter unit may be one of several different adapter units, each of which is dedicated to a different specific purpose, for example, one adapter unit for carrying skis, and another for carrying a sailboard. In each case, the adapter unit comprises an elongate base bar, equipped with hook structure at one end for skewed inserting engagement to an existing rack bar, the skew being such that once the inserting engagement has been made, the elongate base bar can be manipulated to non-removable retention when brought into close parallel relation with the existing rack bar. And when thus oriented parallel to the existing rack bar, clamp structure at the other end of the base bar is firmly securable to the rack bar, to complete the mounting. Hingedly articulating structure carried by the base bar is selectively openable and lockable (1) to retain the article or articles to be carried and (2) to conceal any access to adjustable structure when in locked condition.

Anti-theft cable-locked security is provided for articles mounted to a roof rack and for the roof rack itself, by providing a set or kit of two flexible-cable subassemblies, each of which has a closed-door stop block at one end of its cable, and each of which also has a headed slide which is engageable to an elongate slide-track channel formation on the underside of a roof rack. Certain commercially available roof racks already have such a slide-track slide formation, but for those not thus equipped, an additional channel element can be provided for permanent incorporation in an existing rack. A first one of the subassemblies has a relatively short length of cable, and the headed slide is adjustably clamped to the cable via a knurled nut which is manually set before assembly to the slide track of the rack; once in the slide track, further manual adjustment or tampering is foreclosed. The other subassembly has a relatively great length of cable, and a headed slide may be fixed or adjustably clamped to the cable, at predetermined offset from the involved stop block; the free end of the cable is long enough to wrap the rack-mounted article (or articles) and, if desired, also to wrap the rack bar, to the extent that the free end of the cable can be anchored to the headed slide of the first subassembly. The only necessary adjustment is for positioning the slide of the short-cable assembly, such that upon assembly to the slide track and locked closure of both doors, the article (or articles) and the rack are both anti-theft secure upon the automobile roof.

The invention contemplates roof-rack structure comprising (a) an elongate bar of constant external section profile, and (b) two pad-mounted pedestal supports having provision for inserted through-reception of the respective ends of the bar. Each pedestal support includes its own selectively available one-way-engaging clutch action whereby end-inserted displacement of the bar is freely accommodated, and whereby inserted-bar retraction is foreclosed. Each pedestal support also includes its own jack-actuated clamp for secure lateral anchorage to a roof or window edge. Further, a single manual control serves to operate both the clutch action and the lateral clamp, and the manual control is key-lockable when the conditions of bar-clutched engagement and lateral-clamp setting have both been established. The single manual control is subsequently operable, once unlocked, to release both the lateral clamp and the clutched engagement, thus permitting easy and fast disassembly.

The invention contemplates a tong-like portable carrier having facing jaw cavities on one side of its articulation axis for removable retention of a pair of skis, and facing jaw cavities in the other side of said axis for removable retention of a pair of ski poles. Handle frames provide registering openings which accommodate the insertion of fingers of one hand for a single grasp of both frames when the carrier is in its closed position. Various latching, locking and article-retaining features are described.

Ski carrier

The invention contemplates a rack construction as for carrying skis or the like on the roof or other exterior part of a vehicle. Plural pairs of skis are vertically clamped, back-to-back, by like pairs of relatively movable upstanding post members and a single lockable means carried by the rack is operative to selectively hold or to release a control member for releasing all post pairs in unison. The respective posts of each pair are capable of limited longitudinal displaceability and limited pivotal action, and the lockable actuator is operated to determine whether or not the posts of each pair are to be permitted their pivoted action.

Ski rack

The invention contemplates a releasable-strap ski-pole grip comprising a gle injection-molded piece of flexibly yieldable material having a hand-grip body portion to fit the end of a ski pole, and also having integrally formed upper and lower strap portions which provide radially offset longitudinally approaching ends. These ends carry releasably engageable hook-and-loop tape elements which enable adjustable setting of the strap connection, to suit the comfort and size of a particular gloved hand, and the nature of the connection is to release upon accidental wrenching of the hand with respect to the grip, the release being automatic whatever the degree of adjustment.
