A system and method to provide uniform, high intensity radially inwardly directed electron beams to the interior of a cylindrical volume for the purpose of destroying toxic, hazardous, or noxious organic and/or inorganic compounds contained in air or other media flowing through a cylindrical region; or to destroy or inactivate bacteria, viruses, fungi, or mold spores in such flowing media; to sterilize contents of flowing media; to treat fluidized grains, herbs, or other products; or to destroy chemical warfare agents. A window assembly to transmit electromagnetic radiation, for example, an electron beam, x-rays, or other high energy electromagnetic radiation, is also disclosed.

There is described, for example, a generally cylindrical generator of energetic electrons that releases electrons from a vacuum enclosure into a surrounding space including into the atmosphere where the electrons may be used for a variety of applications including clean up of a flowing gas stream. Described is an efficient electron generator that emits more beam power than past structures in this class of devices and does so in connection with the treatment of gases or surfaces requiring treatment.

Source for energetic electrons

Electron source

A device for generating electromagnetic radiation including a cathode and an anode. The output port that is integral with the cathode is an electron emitting sheet of material having a low work function for emitting electrons and for a given thickness has a large transmissivity for transmitting radiation. The anode has a target configuration capable of emitting electromagnetic radiation when irradiated by an electron beam. The cathode sheet is supported by a support layer that is selected to be transmissive to the electromagnetic radiation when the cathode sheet must be thin enough to transmit the radiation but is not thick enough to be self supporting. When the support layer is an insulator, electrical connection is made directly to the cathode sheet or to a conducting layer interposed between the cathode sheet and support layer.
