A polishing compound is disclosed which is relatively high purity silicon nitride, the silicon nitride comprising particles having equiaxial crystals, the particle size being from about 0.03 to about 5 microns.

A wire bonding tool is disclosed which comprises a metal or cermet stem and a silicon nitride containing tip. The tip is made of a silicon nitride containing composite which is electrically conducting. One end of the tip is fixedly mounted to one end of the stem.

An abrasive frit is disclosed comprising particles of a silicon nitride based material. The particles have essentially sharp edges and a particle size within the range of from about 0.5 to about 150 microns. An abrasive frit is disclosed as described above except that the edges of the particles are essentially smooth. A method is disclosed for producing a abrasive frit of silicon nitride based material. The method involves forming a body of silicon nitride based material, firing the body at a sufficient temperature for a sufficient time to form a relatively low density body which is then crushed to form fragmented material a portion of which comprises essentially sharp edged particles in the above given size range, followed by separating the particles from the balance of the fragmented material. At this point the sharp edged particles can be either polished to produce essentially smooth edges particles or left as is. The particles are then sintered at sufficient temperature and pressure for a sufficient time to form sintered material having a density of at least about 96% of the theoretical density of the silicon nitride based material. The sintered material is then deaggregated, followed by separating that portion of the sintered material having a particle size in the above given size range, which is the abrasive frit, from the balance of the deaggregated material.

An article is disclosed comprising particles of a silicon nitride based material and a lubricating material, the lubricating material occupying interconnected spaces within the article, the spaces being at least about 3% by volume of the article.

In a process for producing a carbide grade powder mixture for making a cemented metal carbide, a mixture of metal carbide particles and wax is formed at a temperature above the melting point of the wax. The wax includes less than about 2 percent by weight of a wetting agent for reducing the surface tension of the wax when in water. The blended mixture including metal binder particles is milled with a liquid milling medium comprising water to substantially uniformly disperse the metal binder particles and to produce a slurry. The slurry is dried to remove the milling medium and produce a powder comprising particles of metal carbide, metal binder and wax.

Process for producing refractory powder

A pressable and sinterable metal carbide grade powder consists essentially of a uniform mixture of a refractory metal carbide powder, a metal binder powder, and from about 0.5 to about 5 percent by weight of an organic amide having a melting point greater than about 120 degrees centigrade.

In a process for producing a refractory metal carbide grade powder, a metal carbide powder is heated above melting point of a wax prior to forming a blended mixture of metal carbide and wax which is subsequently milled with a metal binder in liquid milling medium incompatible with the wax and the mixture is dried to form a powder.
