A rubber composition is disclosed wherein the rubber composition contains at least (a) a rubber component; (b) a silica filler; and, (c) at least one thiuram disulfide accelerator, it being provided that diphenyl guanidine is substantially absent in the rubber composition. The compositions may also include suitable amounts of other ingredients such as carbon black, coupling agents, antiozonants, antioxidants, etc.

Rubber compounding formulation and method

A new class of antiozonant compounds, namely tris(N-alkyl-p-phenylenediamino)-1,3,5-triazine compounds, are incorporated into thermosetting compositions having at least one highly unsaturated rubbery polymer and at least one other elastomer having lesser unsaturation, such as EPDM. Thermosetting compositions are most useful as tire sidewall compositions which may be preferably cured with blends of organic peroxide and sulfur donor accelerators.

Oil resistant, ozone resistant polymer blends are prepared by blending an Acrylonitrile/Butadiene polymer with an EPDM polymer which has had grafted onto it a polymer prepared by polymerizing onto the backbone a methacrylate monomer. The ABS composition of the invention is a matrix of a polymer of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer and a graft copolymer comprising a graftable rubber substrate which is formed from a mixture of an at least partially cross-linked pre-grafted polybutadiene or SBR spine latex, and a low-gel elastomer which has been at least partially cross-linked during the preparation of the product. Within certain ratios of cross-linked spine to low-gel spine, significant improvements in impact strength and weather aging resistance are achieved. In the method of preparation, the latex, monomers and low-gel elastomer, are converted directly to the final product by a conventional suspension polymerization process.

Elastomers and plastic polymers are protected against deterioration by certain new substituted haloacetamide antioxidants which are non-migratory and resist extraction by oils and solvents, of the type ##STR1## e.g., 4-anilino-2,2,2-trichloroacetanilide protects NBR even after sequential exposure to oil and to air at elevated temperature.

Disclosed is a novel polybutadiene or butadiene-styrene copolymer based gum plastic having excellent impact strength and a method for its preparation. The use of small particle size (SPS) spine latex in a latex-suspension process gives unexpectedly good properties by yielding an ABS with at least about 85% of the rubber present as particles within a specified and relatively narrow size range, i.e., 0.04-0.25.mu. and having a number average particle size less than 0.14.mu.. In the method of preparation, the latex spine and monomers are converted directly to the final product by a conventional suspension process.
