A device includes a first housing having a first end configured to couple to an electric meter and a second end configured to couple to an electric meter socket. A power module is disposed at least partially within the first housing and is configured to couple to electrical wiring at a premises. The device includes a second housing having an antenna array, a feed network communicatively coupled to the power module and configured to split power and distribute the power to at least one element of one or more sub-arrays of the antenna array, a wireless wide area network (WWAN) module communicatively coupled to the antenna array and the power module, and a broadband over powerline (BPL) interface communicatively coupled to the WWAN module and the power module.

A device includes a modem having a first feed port and a second feed port. A first planar dual-polarized sub-array has a first beamwidth and includes a first orthogonally polarized element communicatively coupled to the first feed port and a second orthogonally polarized element communicatively coupled to the second feed port. A second planar dual-polarized sub-array has a second beamwidth and includes a third orthogonally polarized element communicatively coupled to the second feed port and a fourth orthogonally polarized element communicatively coupled to the first feed port. The first dual-polarized sub-array and the second planar dual-polarized sub-array generate a collective beamwidth that exceeds the first beamwidth and the second beamwidth.

In some embodiments, a networking apparatus is configured to generate a plurality of sequences of symbols for transmission to plurality of client devices; transmit the plurality of sequences to the plurality of client device via one or more beams focused toward the client devices; and transmit the first sequence of symbols and the second sequence of symbols at least partly simultaneously.

Directed wireless communication

An electronic device includes a first housing including a power module and a second housing coupled to the first housing. The second housing includes a first antenna communicatively coupled to the power module, and oriented in a first direction. The second housing further includes a second antenna communicatively coupled to the power module, and oriented in a second direction that is different than the first direction. At least one printed circuit board (PCB) is disposed in the second housing and communicatively coupled to the power module, the first antenna, and the second antenna A modem module resides within the second housing and communicatively couples to the power module, the first antenna, the second antenna, and the at least one PCB. An interface resides within the second housing and communicatively couples to the power module, the first antenna, the second antenna, the at least one PCB, and the modem module.

Disclosed herein are methods and apparatuses configured to direct wireless communication. In some embodiments, a network apparatus is configured to: receive a first signal transmission from a remote station via a first antenna element of an antenna and a second signal transmission from the remote station via a second antenna element of the antenna simultaneously; determine first signal information for the first transmission; determine second signal information for the second transmission, wherein the second signal information is different than the first signal information; determine a set of weighting values based on the first signal information and the second signal information, wherein the set of weighting values is configured to construct one or more beam-formed transmission signals; and generate the one or more beam-formed transmission signals based on the set of weighting values for transmission to the remote station.

Disclosed herein are methods and apparatuses configured to direct wireless communication. In some embodiments, a networking apparatus is configured to generate a plurality of sequences of symbols for transmission to plurality of client devices; transmit the plurality of sequences to the plurality of client device via one or more beams focused toward the client devices; receive information regarding the one or more beams from the client devices; and modify at least one of the one or more beams based on the information.

In an implementation of directed wireless communication, a multi-beam directed signal system coordinates directed wireless communication with client devices. A transmit beam-forming network routes data communication transmissions to the client devices via directed communication beams that are emanated from an antenna assembly, and a receive beam-forming network receives data communication receptions from the client devices via the directed communication beams.

Horizontally polarized and dual polarized antennas are described herein. In some examples, a horizontally polarized and dual polarized antenna may be mounted or operated with the physical vertical axis of the antenna being substantially perpendicular to a plane defined by the surface of the earth, and emanate an electric field that is parallel to the surface of the earth. The antenna may have a multi-slot aperture that reduces a variation in the far field omni-directional pattern. The antenna may have various cross-sectional configurations, and may have a radome at least partially surrounding the antenna and a supporting structure.

An Adaptive Polarization Array (APA) Algorithm is described for analyzing a wireless signal transmitted by an entity to determine a received polarization of the received wireless signal at a non-coherent receiver. The APA Algorithm determines a transmit polarization state for a transmitter to transmit signals to the entity based in part on the determined received polarization. The transmitter is an arbitrary-polarized transmitter configured to transmit signals at any polarization.

Optimization of transmit signal polarization of an adaptive polarization array (APA)

An Adaptive Polarization Array (APA) Algorithm is described for adjusting the polarization orientation of antennas, such as Dual-polarized array antennas. The APA Algorithm searches to find a polarization state that maximizes a signal quality of a received signal in the presence of interfering signals and noise. The search facilitates adjustment of a polarization state of, for example, receive antennas to maximize a signal quality metric. A proxy metric having no local maxima other than the global maximum is used to search the polarization search domain to find a best polarization state.

Adaptive polarization array (APA)

Antennas that can transceive signals in a horizontally-polarized, omni-directional manner are described. In an example embodiment, an antenna comprises a spiraling surface having a spiral cross-section, the surface forming an internal cavity, an internal channel to the external surface, and an internal wall common to the cavity and the channel. Further, an example embodiment comprises a longitudinal opening allowing access to the cavity and the channel by a transmission feed line. Alternate embodiments comprise various cross-sectional configurations, and may also comprise a radome at least partially surrounding the antenna spiraling surface and supporting structure.
